A Voyage to the South–
Contemporary Images from the Museum Collection
Taiwan, a beautiful island on the circum-Pacific island arc, attracted missionaries and scholars from the West hundreds of years
ago, later became home to people migrating out of China after WWII, and then received people migrating from countries south of it
during its economic take-off. Nowadays, more and more people in Taiwan have emigrated or are emigrating to other places on the
world map amidst the trend of globalization. There is no telling now which place is the place of
origin and which is a foreign place for people originally living in Taiwan and for those from other
countries. Through the imagination of “traveling” and “ocean,” this exhibition creates for viewers
imaginative experiences of landing onshore in the south of Taiwan after a seaborne voyage. The
works in this exhibition are mostly the contemporary works collected by KMFA. In this exhibition,
viewers can be temporarily released from the positions as “spectators” or “local people” and put
themselves into the shoes of “foreigners”, appreciating the stories about “here” and “there”, about
different people immigrating into or emigrating out of this island.

An Instant Is Eternity—2015 Exhibition of Works by
Richard Lin: Donations to the Museum Collection
In 2010, the KMFA held the One Is Everything: 50 Years of Works by Richard Lin exhibition, giving local
viewers a comprehensive introduction to Richard Lin, a master of modernism who was born in Taiwan,
moved abroad, and engaged actively in artistic creation across different fields of both Eastern and
Western art. Regrettably, Lin passed away in 2011 and Ms. Yan Siao-liang, his wife, decided to donate
a generous quantity of his works to the KMFA. Three years after Lin’s passing, the KMFA holds this
exhibition, displaying mostly the works from Ms. Yan’s donations and several works borrowed from other
art institutions. It is hoped that, through this exhibition, the public can appreciate again the works of an art
master who has left the world and also appreciate the timeless values of art.

Akira Kurosawa's epic tale concerns honor and duty during a time when the
old traditional order is breaking down. The film opens with master samurai
Kambei posing as a monk to save a kidnapped farmer's child. Impressed by his
selflessness and bravery, a group of farmers begs him to defend their terrorized
village from bandits. Kambei agrees and together with other samurais they
consolidate the village's defenses and shape the villagers into a militia, while
the bandits loom menacingly nearby. Soon raids and counter-raids build to a final
bloody heart-wrenching battle.

★Akira Kurosawa' s First Ever Color Film
The film focuses on the lives of a variety of characters that happen
to live in a rubbish dump. The first to be introduced is a mentally
challenged boy who lives in a world of fantasy in which he is a tram
conductor. He is both the tram and the tram driver and follows a set
route and schedule through the dump; his dedication to the fantasy
is fanatical. The film title refers to a Japanese onomatopoeia for the
sound made by a tram or train while in motion ( "Do-desu-ka-den dodesu-ka-den do-desu-ka-den"). The sound is made by the boy as he
makes his daily faux-tram route through the dump.

Having made her name in New York’s avant-garde art scene since the late 1950s, Kusama Yayoi (Japanese, 1929- ) has worked in a
wide variety of styles, including surrealism, abstract expressionism, minimalism, pop art, performance art, etc., and continued to dazzle
the world with her iconic polka dots. She has held many large retrospective and touring exhibitions
at major modern art museums in Europe and America in recent years, receiving a highly favorable
response, and has collaborated with Louis Vuitton, launching a Kusama fashion trend. This Asian
touring exhibition got underway in 2013; after being held in Daegu, Shanghai, and Seoul, it is held
in Taiwan at the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts in 2015. The exhibition showcases Kusama’s most
recent works while presenting the rich creative context and unique features of her art from the past
six decades. Containing approximately 120 artworks: paintings, sculptures, installations, and video
works, this Kusama solo exhibition will be unprecedented in Taiwan.

Sharing the same cultural root, the art scenes across the Strait, however, have both become pluralistic and multi-perspective in
the wake of a transformation brought about by a synthesis of influences (of history, politics, economics, external exchanges, etc).
In such a contemporary context, arts exchange leads to exploration of cultural sources and also
gives rise to the related issues worthy of profound thinking; for example, the internal transition
of landscape in realty occurring under the intertwining and overlapping landscapes/spectacles of
reality, the importance of cultural reference in the context of globalization, the contemporary art
searches in the multidimensional reflection, and so on. The exhibition not only provides an insight
into the cross-Strait artists’ reflections, thirty in total, on both personal existential experiences
and societies they live in, inviting viewers to access art from various angles, but also fosters more
possible orientations for visual dialogues to take place within the space of art museums.

A diary is a daily record, an intimacy of personal memory. It is meaningful because it records one’s
present moment's matters. It is significant because it contains an extensive series of data. The
diaries that are exhibited in this exhibition are the treasures from the digital archive of the Institute of
Taiwan History of Academia Sinica. A section "Kaohsiung in Diaries" was especially designed which
exclusively collects diarists' writings about Kaohsiung. The Museum hopes visitors can relate to
today's Kaohsiung what the diarists' impressions were of Kaohsiung.

Jhihshan Hall, Cultural Center
Hsieh Yi-e, a senior ink painting artist in Kaohsiung, is known for her long years of studying poetry, calligraphy and painting.
Although she just expanded her artistic repertoire to fine brushwork painting, she recently has developed her command of skills
and insights into this newly learned art form. In the Chinese title of this exhibition, the term “Han Dan” is an ancient Chinese
expression for lotus, giving a straightforward indication of the exhibition theme. Lotus is one of the most representative topics
in the art of Chinese bird-and-flower painting. In traditional Chinese ink painting, the lotus is often portrayed as a symbol of
purity out of dirty sludge. In her paintings in this exhibition, Hsieh celebrates the beauty of lotus
just like the other artists but, more importantly, she adds more philosophical depth into her
paintings by highlighting the beauty of the lotus starting to wither and wilt in autumn. Based
on her previous experiences of painting from life, Hsieh used both techniques of abstract and
realistic representation to convert what she has seen, learned and thought about lotus into
her paintings that cross the boundary between fine brushwork painting and impressionist ink
painting. Her paintings give a brand-new reinterpretation and redefinition of what lotus painting
is in the art of traditional Chinese ink painting.

Result Presentation by the Ying-Ming Junior High School Orchestra
Chiu-ter Chiu has been working with glass for over twenty years; fascinated by the unique
beauty in the plasticity and crystal clear quality of glass, Chiu’s research focuses on the artistic
presentation of glass as well as exploring the mysterious and beautiful charm of glass as a
material. Chiu presents forms and expressions by performing high temperature experiments in
which objects are continuously melted and seized, deconstructing shapes and colors, seeking
out new imageries and emotions that evolve from traditional styles, using abstract art forms to
express inner feelings, and contemplating new ideas. Chiu’s inspirations originate from an intuitive
feel for the beauty and harmony of nature, so themes and concepts of Chiu’s works are often
based on real-life experiences and emotions as he creates new artistic expressions and contexts.

The 2015 Kaohsiung Awards Competition received works submitted by approximately 600 artists around
Taiwan. After careful selection and discussion among the judges, a total of five Kaohsiung Awards
winners, eight Excellent Work Awards winners, and three Observer Awards winners were decided
along with the other works selected for the Kaohsiung Awards Exhibition this year. In addition, owing to
the support from the HCS Calligraphy Foundation, the Kaohsiung Awards Competition started to offer
the “HCS Special Award for Calligraphy/Seal-Engraving Works” this year. Because all past winners of
the Kaohsiung Awards are now active in the field of art as emerging artists at home and even abroad,
the competition is now viewed as an important touchstone and milestone of career development by
many aspiring artists. With all the talented artists competing against one another for the highest honor
every year, the Kaohsiung Awards Competition and its exhibition have become an exciting center of
attention for many members of the art world, both domestically and internationally.
