Plot Development
WEEK 4 Reading Circle Activities
SST: series of events, plot development, change, characters, events,
effects, normality
Learning intention: My focus this week is on exploring plot
development. I will commence reading my novel and complete the
activities below.
My Suitcase
You are to select 4 or 5 objects that are significant in your life, for
example: a shawl belonging to a grandmother, a prayer book, a stuffed
toy, a favourite recipe etc. These are drawn in a suitcase in your
workbook titled “My Suitcase”. In your teams you are to present your
suitcase telling the story of your life as represented by the objects in your
case. Compose an explanation outlining why you have chosen these
items (one page).
Look up the definitions for this week’s SST and write your own
definition for each in your workbook.
Commence reading your novel in reading teams for the first lesson
then continue to read at home and discuss with your team members.
At the end of every three chapters…
You need to complete a minimum of three sticky notes for discussion
per chapter. Each sticky note MUST be supported with evidence from the
text, as a foundation for accountable talk discussion in teams and with the
teacher. Stick these stickies in your novel.
Connecting with plot
At the end of every three chapters you need to record ideas, feelings and
connections with the text, and track whether these change as the plot
progresses (1/2 page).
Language drives the plot
Whilst reading each chapter, construct a Word map for each word you are
not familiar with. Paste this into the back of your workbook.
Predicting the plot
Compose a paragraph in your workbook where you outline what you
believe may happen in the next chapter (1 paragraph).
Success criteria:
☐ I understand the subject specific terminology and have written
definitions for each in my own words.
☐ I have demonstrated knowledge of this novel by writing information
on at least three stickies for each chapter and pasting them into my novel.
☐ I have successfully written half a page response after every three
chapters.
☐ I have constructed a word map for the challenging words in each
chapter.
☐ I have written a paragraph predicting what may happen in the next
chapter.
