About the EPA
The Estonian Environment Agency (ESTEA) was established on June 1, 2013 by merging the
Estonian Environment Information Centre and the Estonian Meteorological and Hydrological
Institute. The Estonian Environment Agency is a state agency administered by Ministry of
the Environment.
ESTEA’s headquaters is situated in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. We have units also in other
parts of Estonia, including Tartu and weather monitoring network in several regions of
Estonia.

Main responsibilities
The Estonian Environmental Agency (ESTEA) provides reliable environmental information on
a wide range of areas, such as biodiversity, waste, water, game, forestry, air, weather and
climate for decision-makers as well as the wider public. State weather service as part of
ESTEA provides weather reports and warnings in Estonia. The tasks of ESTEA are collecting,
processing and analysing data on the state of environment of Estonia and the factors
influencing it and providing weather reports and warnings. More specifically, ESTEA is
 delivering state of environment reports
 delivering integrated environmental assessments
 organising performance of state monitoring program
 evaluating the effectiveness of nature protection
 prognosing forest fires
 testing and examining forest managers
 issuing permits of forest management works
 organising environmental applied researches and inventories
 acts as EMAS and EU ecolable competent body of Estonia
 compiling meteorological and hydrological prognoses and warnings
 providing traffic safety prognoses arising from weather conditions
ESTEA is a member of European Environment Agency. The director general of the agency
acts as a permanent representative of Estonia in the World Meteorological Organisation and
as designated IPCC focal point.
Budget and staff
The budget of ESTEA in 2015 is 8 806 421, 34 euros with 262 job positions.
