When we launched our website in 1997, I thought of it as an aside and a minor addition to our efforts
to promote the furniture. Today it is more as if this catalog and all else are supplements to the website.
Many people find us there first; pages of information are relatively easy to produce, update, and
disseminate. You can see much more information on design, construction, wood, finish, comfort, shipping, and many other subjects, as well as the archives of testimonials, on our website.
That said, a computer monitor is not so pleasing as ink on nice paper that you can hold in your hand.

This is an unusual business for the times.
It is small and family owned. I work with my wife, son, and three other
artist-craftsmen in a shop we built. Together, we make furniture and send it to
people who are pleased and appreciative. Guests come and say we are living a
dream. When I look up, I see it.
This business serves an international clientele without distributors. The internet
has made our market the world. People searching for rocking chairs, comfortable
dining chairs, handmade trestle tables, and numerous other items and
descriptions find our site. Our design, materials, workmanship, guarantee,

This furniture is made in the USA. For many, including us, this is important.
Our designs are original. This furniture is straightforward. If it is a chair, it is
comfortable. If it is a table, it is sturdy. And that is how they look. Function
secured, we shape line, form, and contour to animate light and shadow into
movement and grace.
We enhance art and handwork with the efficiencies of manufacturing. Wood is
a medium as well as a material. Using the color, figure, and character of the wood,
we create a unique composition within the form of each individual piece of
furniture. We carefully select, before we reverently cut. We use machinery and
organization to produce precision; we use handwork to create distinction.
We build furniture to the highest standards of craftsmanship. Because much of
the structure of our furniture is exposed, there is no place to hide less than
impeccable technique — our craftsmanship is evident. The joints fit and are
fitting. In the revealing reflection from the satin surface, the planes, edges, and
shapes show true to line, to curve, and to contour. The finish delights the hand as
well as the eye.

Wood and Moisture
Wood serves to carry water from earth to sky. It has an affinity for moisture. Solid wood
in furniture changes dimension as the humidity of its location changes and water (usually
as vapor) flows in or out of the pores and fibers. Woodworkers ignore this dimensional
change at their peril. We test wood for its moisture content when we get it, and we control
the temperature and humidity of our storage, assembly, and finishing rooms so that the
wood in our furniture will be stable in its place of service.

Weather is hard on wood, the color gets grayer, the surface less
smooth. If wood is kept from direct rain and sun (covered porches),
the process is slowed greatly. The Weeks Rocker in Mahogany can
weather without coming apart. It is guaranteed for seven years when
used on the porch. For maintenance, we recommend washing the chair
every couple of years. It may be re-oiled if desired.

Contrasting Plugs and Wedges
We can use contrasting woods as an accent. The price for this is $150.
Inlays
We can inlay wood of contrasting color into chair backs, drawer fronts, table tops, stool tops, etc. We have
inlayed initials, logos, symbols, and ranch brands. Typical cost is $100 per inlayed piece.
Engraving
We can engrave designs and text
into the furniture. Engraving is

Bronze Plaques
We can have bronze plaques made with text of your choice to commemorate events, milestones, births, etc.

Dining Chairs, we believe, should:

To fulfill the above criteria we have developed our own set of techniques and design elements. Some are innovations
to long-standing traditions, some are adaptations, and some are adoptions. In total, they are a style.

How we design a chair
We design a chair by working from anatomy to sculpture. We build a “fitting booth.” We ask every
visitor to comment on the comfort and support provided for the purpose: for rocking, your body
should be supported, but relaxed; for dining, alert, in good posture. The lumbar curve and other
contours and dimensions are very different for these two activities. Guided by comments, “Too low,”
“More support here,” “I can feel that,” we adjust and fill in the curves. After responding to fifty or
so people, we have found an essential mean, comfortable to all...or nearly all.
Projecting the points found in the booth to the drawing board, I connect the dots and design the
structure, trying to give it some life. From the drawings, we build a prototype, again tested by many.
We make final adjustments and refine the form and surfaces.
This is a chart taken from data in the American Statistician (August,
2003. Vol. 56 No. 3.) illustrating the range of human heights.
The white squares represent women, the gray, men. The “x’s” and
half “x’s” represent, subjectively, the comments we hear that our
chairs (rockers and diners) are not an excellent fit. We lose a few
at the extremes, and a random couple in the middle, but
overwhelmingly we hear, “perfect”— hence, our guarantee and
offer of a test.
Using the color, figure, and texture of wood, the interplay of light and shadow, proportion, balance,
and mathematics, we reveal timeless principles of sculpture, architecture, and engineering — in a
simple chair.

Dining Tables
When lumber arrives at the shop, we look for boards of exceptional color, figure, and character, boards that
are particularly beautiful and coherent, boards that we would hate to cut up.
When someone orders a table, we choose boards from this “special reserve” and compose the top. When the
boards are joined, the seams almost disappear, but the heft and expression of individual, thick boards remain,
not to be confused with veneer.

The grain on the table top is beautiful, and as you say,
it is difficult to see the seams where the boards are
glued together. I even went as far as to tape a piece of
twine from edge to edge, along the seams to expose
them. Still, there are areas where the grain of one
board flows so well into the grain of the next, that it
is quite impossible to follow any seam the entire length
of the table!

Forming the apron

Leg-and-Apro n Ta bl e s
Tables of this type have aprons (sometimes called rails)
mortised into legs supporting overhanging tops. The tops
may be fixed or extension. Our catalogued versions of
these tables, the Paschall and the Phillips, have arched
aprons and one-inch thick tops with thumbnail edges.

The Paschall Table legs are turned round below
the mortises for the aprons. We work freehand at the
lathe. After turning, we carve away wood on the
remaining outside corner so that the profile curves out to
the largest diameter of the turning, giving a classic, yet
jaunty aspect to this line.
Fixed top Leg-and-Apron Tables
The grain of a fixed top table parallels the long dimension of the top. This orientation provides the most
dramatic display of figure. The prices for Paschall and Phillips Tables with fixed tops (up to 94" long) vary

The Phillips Table
Our Phillips Table legs are tapered and contoured and scaled to their purpose. The surfaces of the legs are not
flat but gently curved to quicken the light and soften the touch. The larger the table, the larger we make the leg.

Barstools
We have two barstool designs in two heights, 24" and 30". Please note where the
footrests appear to "grow" out of the legs and where the round tenons on the
tops of the legs penetrate the seats and are wedged.
The Berry Barstool
The Berry, having no back, is particularly suited for bars, islands, and counters, where an extension of the back
above the seat would obstruct the workspace and workflow, or where an extension of the back legs would

When we take your order, we quote a shipping date. About a week before the shipping date, we send a
Shipping Information Sheet with dates, phone numbers, and a tracking number.
Most rockers are crated in our shop and shipped motor freight. Most dining furniture is shipped “blanket
wrapped.” Stools and side tables (traveling alone) are shipped by parcel carriers.
We guarantee the delivery of our furniture. We will see that you get what you ordered in mint condition.
Any defect in the furniture or delivery service is our responsibility until you are happy.
