The Venetian Collection is proud to offer the finest and
most authentic Venetian masks available.
Whether it’s a small gathering or a full-blown
masquerade, our Venetian masks conjure up
mystique, glamour, secrecy, excitement and dare we

Originally worn by the upper class for more dubious
reasons, Venetian masks still evoke the darker side of
life with all its hidden intrigue.
Masks have the power to transform any function from
being mundane into an euphoric, memorable experience.
With a choice of hundreds of different designs direct
from Venice, we are one of the largest stockists of
masks in the UK, able to satisfy any requirements.
Today, after a history of political and religious influence,
the mask is part of the carnival, the society ball and the
fancy dress party.

The Venetian Collection
We have over thirty years experience in providing
Venetian masks and costumes to thousands of
customers in this country and abroad.
We pride ourselves on having one of the largest stocks
of Venetian masks in the country!
The Venetian Collection was born out of a desire to
promote and provide genuine Venetian masks for our
thousands of existing customers, who regularly hire their
costumes from our associated company, Mad World
Costume Hire.
Mad World Costume Hire, based in the city of London
and at Crawley near Gatwick, has an enviable reputation
of providing the best costumes available, anywhere.
Our experienced and friendly sales staff can advise on
the most appropriate mask for your particular function.
At the Venetian Collection we provide a mail order
service, and can guarantee an immediate dispatch.*
If you are arranging a masked ball, we can provide a
display stand and experienced sales staff to sell our
masks to your guests on the night of your function –
ideal for those guests who may have forgotten to
purchase their masks prior to the event.
Whatever your requirements, be it for masks or

The History of the Venetian Masks
For over 700 years, Venetian masks have played a major
part in the intrigues and mystique of Venice.
In modern times this intrigue has been enhanced by
two movies: Fellini's controversial Casanova in 1976
and the more recent Eyes Wide Shut, directed in
1999 by Stanley Kubrick and starring Tom Cruise and
Nicole Kidman.
A number of the masks in Eyes Wide Shut were
supplied by the Venetian Collection.
Worn in many scenes by naked women and men in
black cloaks, our masks were carefully designed to
create a strange and mysterious atmosphere of surreal,
dream-like decadence.
On its release, the movie generated a storm of media
attention and a huge upsurge in the use of Venetian
masks at parties, product launches and corporate events
around the world.
'Masquerading' started in the thirteenth century, when
Venice was as lively and crowded as it is today.
As a result, many people, particularly the rich and
famous but also courtesans, gigolos, and others who
needed to conduct themselves with the utmost
discretion and privacy and who required anonymity,
started to wear masks to achieve this.
Consequently a new breed of professionals emerged
who were able to make stunning masks for these clients
and a whole new industry was born.
But the secrecy that the masks provided also led to
an inevitable increase in crime and a general decline
in morals.
In the fourteenth century it became necessary to
introduce decrees forbidding the everyday wearing of
masks, and masquerading was restricted to special
carnivals and festivals.

These spectacular happenings draw visitors from all
over the world with the main Venetian event, The
Carnavale, taking place in February each year.

All of our masks can truly claim to be Venetian as they
are designed and made in our workshops in the heart of
Venice to the very highest standards.
They are strong, durable and stylish, yet lightweight
and comfortable.
We have many colours and designs of mask to choose
from, so there is something for every occasion in terms
of both style and price.
Our half-face masks leave your mouth uncovered, which
gives freedom for eating, drinking, talking – and maybe
stealing a kiss from a mysterious stranger!

The Venetian Collection
The Manufacturing of a
Venetian Mask
All of our masks are designed and made in Venetian
workshops, where they have been manufactured in the
same manner for hundreds of years.
These beautiful masks are handmade using traditional
techniques and materials mainly wood pulp or papier
mâché, with resin for extra strength.
Each mask is sumptuously decorated.
Intricate, detailed painting is undertaken by hand,
and further embellishments are added using silver and
gold leaf.
We also produce other decorative effects with imitation
pearls and stones, gorgeous braiding and brightly
coloured feathers.
Depending on the type of mask, we sometimes use
glitter, waxed paper and even pieces of sheet music.
As they are handmade each one will have its own
characteristic size and shape.
A truly genuine hand-made mask, traditionally made by
craftsmen whose skills have been handed down from
generation to generation for hundreds of years.
