We Are Here… - Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ

T
hank you for worshipping with us this morning. We extend a special welcome
to our guests and ask that you complete a blue or yellow visitor’s card and
place it in the offering plate.
I
n the pew racks, are folders with information about the various aspects of the
service. If you are visiting, please feel free to reach out to someone sitting near
you and ask them questions about the service. Many of our visitors ask us about
the time of offering. This is a time in our service when we respond to God’s gifts of
love by offering the gifts of our lives. For many of us, this is when we make a
financial gift towards the ministries and programs of our church. We also use this
time to ask God how we might use the gifts of our hands and hearts in sharing
God’s love. If you are visiting, there is no obligation to give a financial gift. We
are just glad you are worshipping with us.

EVANGELICAL REFORMED CHURCH
United Church of Christ
- An Open and Affirming Congregation –
May 17, 2015
YOUTH SUNDAY
10:30 a.m.
The numbered hymns are from the Black Hymnal
†All who are able may stand.
We Are Here…
(Today’s service has been planned by the Youth of ERUCC and focuses on the
theme of “We Are Here…” The gifts of youth are often overlooked or ignored in
church and society. The youth of ERUCC celebrate the support they receive from
members and friends of ERUCC and the many people who create safe spaces in
their lives to explore their faith and identity. In today’s service, ERUCC Youth will
demonstrate that they are here in beauty and strength, recognizing that each one
of them is a unique and beloved child of God. They will also affirm that while they
celebrate their individuality, they recognize the strength that comes from being
together as a group and as part of the Body of Christ. Be who you are but
remember we are in unity with one another.
As you entered the sanctuary this morning, you were given a piece of yarn. As we
worship this morning, we invite you to tie your piece of yarn to that of the person
sitting next or near you. In this way, we will create a colourful web symbolic of
our uniqueness as well as the beauty of the web of our relationships. )

†Opening Prayer (in unison)
Cameron Pain
Loving God, we come together to reconnect to you, the source of love.
Loving God, we come together to reconnect with each other, the source of
community. Loving God, be with us in this time that we may be
encouraged in love now and always. Amen.
†Opening Hymn “Here I Am Lord”
I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry.
All who dwell in dark and sin, my hand will save.
I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send?
Refrain:
Here I am Lord, Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.
I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people's pain.
I have wept for love of them. They turn away.
I will break their hearts of stone, give them hearts for love alone.
I will speak My word to them Whom shall I send? (Refrain)
I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame,
I will set a feast for them. My hand will save.
Finest bread I will provide till their hearts be satisfied.
I will give my life to them. Whom shall I send? (Refrain)
†Prayer of Confession
Thomas Morris
Leader:
As Brothers and Sisters, in the name of the one who came to call
sinners, let us come before our God in search of forgiveness:
All:
Merciful Shepherd,
We stand here this day as your unique and sometimes divided
flock. Gather us in, we the lost, and we the sinners. Sent to heal
the contrite of heart, forgive us, cleanse us, and renew us, oh
triune God. Hear our prayers… (Moment of silent prayer and
reflection)…and lead us all to everlasting light.
†Choral Confessional Song “Christ Be Our Light” Verses 1-2
B. Farrell
†Assurance of Pardon
The promise of God is clear –
God sent Jesus into the world so that we might live.
When we abide in God, God abides in us.
When we love one another, God lives in us.

The Morning Offering
Offertory “Blest Be the Tie that Binds”
arrangement by
John Wenner of hymn #393
Sam Wenner, trumpet; Connor Crutchley,
Brian Wenner, Thomas Morris, saxophone; Maddie Martin, flute
†Offertory Response “Take My Gifts
#562, stanza 1
Take my gifts and let me love you, God who first of all loved me,
gave me light and food and shelter, gave me life and set me free,
now because your love has touched me, I have love to give away,
now the bread of love is rising, loaves of love to multiply!
†Prayer of Dedication for the Offering
God longs for all of us to live bountiful lives. We share these gifts from the
bounty with which we are blessed, in order that they may be a blessing to
others. Amen.
†Closing Song “We Are the World”
There comes a time when we heed a certain call
When the world must come together as one
There are people dying
And it's time to lend a hand to life
The greatest gift of all
- M. Jackson/L. Richie
We can't go on pretending day by day
That someone, somewhere will soon make a change
We all are a part of God's great big family
And the truth, you know,
Love is all we need
[Chorus] We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me
Send them your heart so they'll know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us by turning stone to bread
So we all must lend a helping hand
[Repeat Chorus]
When you're down and out, there seems no hope at all
But if you just believe there's no way we can fall
Well...well...well
Let's realize that a change can only come
When we stand together as one
[Repeat Chorus]
†Blessing
Be God’s good people in the world,
and delight in its wonders.
Be generous to those in need.
Show kindness to all you meet,
and let the Spirit of God fill your hearts with joy.
Postlude
THANK YOU!
The Youth of ERUCC thank all of you for your awesome support of our projects, trips, and
especially for sharing the faith journey with us by listening to our questions and concerns and
helping us to feel like we belong.
Special thanks to the adults, who teach us in Sunday School, lead us in music, serve as youth
advisors and accompany us on trips. Yes, we are grateful for our parents, too, who help in so
many ways and always love us. We are grateful to our choir leaders – Marj Bernstein, Nancy
Doll, and Trish Coffey and also to Alison who provides encouragement and support.
We need to thank a few people for all the hours and the support they have shared with us over
the past year. Thank you to: Kim Sexton, Bettie Joe and Milt Crutchley, Becky and Rodney
Martin, Kim Jahoda, Dan Smith, Starr and Jeff Schaeberle, Glenn Wallace, and Jim Weitz.

The Lay Visitors for this week are Pat Sunday and Anne Hoffmann. Lay visitors
are members of the congregation who share friendship and visits with members of
our congregation who are unable to join us for worship on Sunday mornings. These
Faithful Friends visit members in their homes, hospitals, assisted living, and nursing
homes. Faithful friends can also send cards or make phone calls to our homebound
members. We can provide you with all contact information if you are interested in
helping out. If you are interested in being involved in this ministry, please contact
Pastor Daniel.
Attendance last Sunday: Not available at time of printing.
Anticipating a stay in the hospital? Please call the Church Office at 301-6622762. If you are admitted unexpectedly, please have a family member or friend
notify the office.
Hospital and Prayer List – your pastors want to be available when members of
ERUCC are in the hospital. Please let us know so that we can visit with you and
your family and provide support. We always ask permission before adding a name
to be included in the prayer list or in the verbal announcements on a Sunday
morning. There are many for whom we pray and visit whose names are not listed in
the bulletin by their request.
Prayer List - Please remember the following people in your prayers this week: Jack
Mens, Cindy Castellucci, Molly Marsh, Renee Collmus, Esther Wallace (mother of
Glenn Wallace) Terry Smiley (uncle of Scott Smiley), Paul Howsare (father of

WORSHIP NOTES: Pentecost - Pentecost, as described in the classic text
in Acts 2:1-21, is a high holy day of the life of the church. Pentecost is the day
we celebrate the founding of the Christian church. More than that, on
Pentecost, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit into the life of the church
and into our own lives. The power of the Holy Spirit is reinforced in the gospel
for this day, John 15:26-27 and 16:4b-15, when Jesus explains what the Holy
Spirit will do for the faithful. This raises the question of what “spirit” means to
us in the 21st Century. What does “spirit” look like in these modern times?
The Senior Choir will be singing.
