Over the 5 years the company has grown exponentially from £200,000 turnover in its first year of trading to £7 million in 2012. But the impact of the brand goes way beyond a profitable balance sheet. Partnering with the Harris Tweed Authority ensured a new generation of skilled labour and guaranteed the future of the industry and the wider Hebridean economy. The company now counts Chanel, Converse, Vivienne Westwood, Moncler, TopMan and Paul Smith as clients. Former Group President of Ralph Lauren Europe, Glaswegian Dr Brian Duffy was inducted into the Scottish Fashion Awards Hall of Fame, which was presented by Professor Christopher Moore, Director of the GCU British School of Fashion. Duffy carved an impressive career having trained as a chartered accountant before becoming the CEO of Wonderbra, spearheading the phenomenally successful ‘Hello Boys’ campaign. During his reign at Ralph Lauren he managed store openings in Russia, Eastern Europe and the Middle East and today consults for global luxury brands. Scottish Model of the Year was presented to Mary Charteris who has shot for US Vogue, British Vogue, Italian Vogue, Vanity Fair, Purple, Dazed, Love, Tatler and worked with Mario Testino, Terry Richardson, Ellen Von Unwerth and David Bailey. Edinburgh born Lauren Smith won the ‘Scottish Graduate of the Year’ award, which, added to her 2013 accolades, having already scooped the ‘George Gold Award’ at Graduate Fashion Week in June. Finlay & Co, a new British eyewear brand was awarded the ‘Scottish Accessory Designer of the Year’ for their handmade wooden sunglasses. Having delivered record breaking sales figures in 2012, opening 16 new stores and as well as launching new concepts with kids and an online French version of their website, the brand is a stand-out winner. Louise Gray picked up ‘Scottish Innovator of the Year’ award. The maverick maven of London Fashion Week left her home in the North of Scotland in 2007 after graduating from Glasgow School of Art. After her MA from Central St.Martins she scooped the ‘New Talent’ award at Lulu Kennedy’s Fashion East initiative. But it’s her unique identity that’s transferred through to her mainline collections, often described as a ‘riot of colour’ that’s infectious and that has global fashion editors full of praise. She’s collaborated with Pollini on a shoe collection, created jewellery for Asos and turned her whimsical hands to a capsule collection for TopShop. Aberdeenshire raised Emeli Sandé received the ‘Scottish Fashion Icon’ award. This was the only award of the night that was voted for by the general public where Emeli beat off stiff competition from the global fan bases of Andy Murray and Amy MacDonald. Over the last 12 months there has been a dramatic shift in Sandé’s styling where the singer / songwriter is now perceived as a modern day style icon noted for her youthful and stylish persona. She likes to keep her looks simple but effective and supports British designers like Jonathan Saunders, McQueen and Stella McCartney. Her signature blonde crop and red lips was a clear winner for the voting public. Eccentric designer Pam Hogg received the prestigious ‘Creative Excellence’ award for her skintight punk looks that still define her collections today the same way they did in the 80’s. Exhibiting at LFW’s On/Off catwalks Hogg’s trademark catsuits have secured a new celebrity following over the last 4 seasons. It was no surprise that Christopher Kane was crowned the King of the Scottish fashion scene once again as he lifted the ‘Scottish Designer of the Year’ trophy. It’s been a whirlwind year for Newarthill-born Kane and his sister, Deputy Creative Director Tammy. The eponymous brand has taken on a new dimension thanks to the investment from luxury group Kering SA (previously known as PPR), home to Stella McCartney, Saint Laurent and Gucci; it took a majority stake in the Kane label. Over the last few years Kane has become a major attraction and star of London Fashion Week, a favourite of celebrities including Keira Knightley and Alexa Chung, and is credited with being the great hope of British fashion, which after this years commercial activities has certainly confirmed the industry’s forecasts. Professor Christopher Moore, Director of the British School of Fashion said “The awards contribute on so many levels - by recognising great talent, providing a powerful motivation for advancement, but perhaps most importantly of all, the awards provide an outstanding support to the British fashion industry.” After the Dover House presentation VIP guests were transported to 8 Northumberland for the Winners Gala – A Scottish Banquet. Pommery Pop was served to guests before they indulged in Isle of Mull scallops with Mcsweens Haggis, apple & ginger, followed by a Slow roasted loin of Beef from the Cairngorm national park, steak and kidney pie, with red wine sauce. Dessert was a raspberry and lemon tart, strawberry and toasted oat cranachan Irn Bru granita! Coffee was served with Iain Burnett Highland Chocolatier chocolate and guests all toasted with a dram of Auchentoshan whisky, the most unique single Scottish malt. DJ Beatnik entertained the guests at dinner before guests moved on to the after party at Whisky Mist in Mayfair!
