Spokane Community College Lair Auditorium
10am - Tom Eckberg, Forest Health Specialist, Idaho Department of Lands - “Creepy Crawlies in the
Home Garden” - Insects and other arthropods are the most numerous life forms found on earth. They
have been here for millions of years, and if you grow a garden you will have to contend with them. It is
not all bad news because most insects are not pests, in fact many are either innocuous or beneficial.
Yes, there are some “bad actors” out there, but there are also many insects that can assist you in your
pest management program. Tom will discuss methods to minimize damage from pest species using organic techniques
as well as integrated pest management and conventional control methods. He will also discuss other animals that are
not insects such as centipedes, millipedes and slugs that are also common inhabitants around the home. Remember
that many bugs--bees, lady beetles, green lacewings, and praying mantis, to name a few--are beneficial. You want
them in your yard. Don't eliminate a bug just because it's a bug!
11:30am - Lindell Haggin, Spokane Audubon Society Board Member - “Bird Sightings in
your Inland Northwest Garden” - We all love birds. Birds inspire us with their magnificence,
dignity and the grace of flight. We love to watch these fascinating creatures, but how much do
you know about identifying them? Learn about birds with tips on identifying, feeding, housing,
protecting, and enjoying the birds you love to watch in your garden. Birds speak to us in many
ways and with many voices: through myths, songs, folklore and poetry. Birds have been a
source of inspiration since pre-historic times. They have had a powerful place in human
cultures as symbols of freedom and wisdom.
1pm - Diane Stutzman, Desert Jewels Nursery - “Planting for All Winged Creatures” - Birds and
butterflies are fun to watch in the garden and they play an important role pollinating flowers, helping
control pests and scattering seeds. With just a little bit of planning, you can have them flocking to your
garden. The key is to know what they are looking for. Landscaping for birds begins with trees and
thickets for food and cover. Planting a flower garden also attracts birds and butterflies and provides
host food plants for butterflies and their caterpillars. Flowers provide color, as well as nectar and
seeds. Trees and shrubs bear nuts, fruit and berries and offer shelter, breeding places and nesting
sites for birds and butterflies. Ponds, fountains or other water elements accent the garden and provide necessary
moisture and drinking sources for birds and butterflies. Learn which plants are preferred by these beautiful winged
creatures so you can create your own backyard paradise.
2:30pm - Phyllis Stephens - Local Gardening Icon - “All Creatures Great & Small, Gardens for
All” - What makes a garden beautiful? Celebrate the nature and wildlife to be found when we
choose to share our space with birds, butterflies, pollinators, bats, and other wildlife. If you love
nature, devote your garden to creating welcoming habitat for wildlife. You will see beauty in the
hum of a hummingbirds wings, the intricacy of a spider’s web, the acrobatic flight of dragonflies,
and the delicate flight of the butterflies. Learn to use methods that respect the environment and
cause no harm to ecosystems around us. Natural resources need to be used wisely and you can
choose the most appropriate regionally native plants to entice more wildlife to find food and shelter in your garden. Talk
about the birds and the bees and the flowers and the trees. Encourage bugs. Plant for butterflies. Love frogs and
toads. Welcome bats and all creatures great and small.

10am - Diana Lynn Rehn, President, Inland Empire Water Garden & Koi Society (IEWGKS) - “Koi
Ponds: Pleasures & Problems” - Koi ponds are a constant source of pleasure for their owners but you
have to be aware of some of the potential problems associated with keeping Koi. Diana has been the
President of IEWGKS in Spokane for the last 5 years. Her love of water gardening, koi keeping, water
plants and goldfish has not wavered even with the problems you can come up against, including predators,
water quality issues, parasites, and fish diseases. Come learn how to get the maximum enjoyment out of
your water garden, goldfish or koi pond. Pleasures can outweigh any issues that might come up.
11am - Gary Chang, Assistant Professor, Gonzaga University, Dept of Biology - “Spokane Pollinators
& their Natural History” - Pollination: it's vital to life on Earth, but largely unseen by the human eye.
Virtually all of the world’s seed plants need to be pollinated. Increasing attention is being paid to the
activities of native pollinators in the environment. This talk will introduce the natural history of some of
the bees, butterflies, and other pollinators that are native to the Spokane area, as well as their ecology and behavior.
Put out the welcome mat for native bees, beneficial and beautiful insects by increasing biodiversity.
noon - Susan & Paul Puhek, owners S&P Homestead Farm - “Basic Chicken Keeping 101” Keeping chickens in the backyard has lots of benefits and done properly will reduce kitchen and
food waste and reward you and your garden in many ways for years to come. Presentation
focuses on chicken raising for beginners, and what it takes to raise healthy chickens. Topics will
include: Summery of chicken keeping regulations in the Spokane area, basic housing, breed
selection, feeding and caring for chickens, raising baby chickens, and egg production.
1pm - Pat Munts - Small Farms & Acreage Coordinator, WSU Spokane County Extension “Wildlife Friendly Backyards” - No matter where you live, or how big or small your backyard is,
wildlife friendly areas can be easily set up to help out local wildlife. Take a look around your own
backyard. Do you see any animals like squirrels or robins or butterflies going about their daily
business in native grasses and bushes? Do you smell fragrant flowers and trees and hear the
sounds of finches and sparrows? We share our gardens with lots of different big and little and all
hungry animals. Learn what plants are attractive to wildlife and how to provide them with year-round food, water and
shelter and to balance their needs with your needs--peaceably.
2pm - Ella Rowan, Washington State Fish & Wildlife Biologist - “The Amazing Bats
of Washington” - Bats are beautiful. There are so many misconceptions out there
about bats. Bats are not evil, blood-thirsty creatures that fly around at night trying to
get caught in your hair. Bats are graceful and fascinating nocturnal creatures, which
benefit humans by pollinating plants, dispersing seeds, and feeding on insect pests.
This talk and slide show will discuss the bats native to Washington, their many unusual adaptations and ways humans
can help them survive in a changing world.
