The Paper
The Planet
Artisans have been embedding seeds in paper for texture for
centuries. We have worked for years at perfecting the process
to insure the seeds will actually grow.
Today, business is done differently—a larger premium is
placed on sustainability. Consumers expect companies to
give back to their communities through resource conservation
and impact reduction.
Since 1995, we have integrated some of the world’s best
practices in papermaking with our own homegrown
innovations, and Bloomin has become
recognized as the world’s foremost
authority on this specialized commodity.
Because we have built our reputation
on making seed paper that actually
grows, traditional papermaking methods
can not be used. By carefully controlling
the pressure on the press, and
all aspects of the drying process
(temperature, time, humidity, and
capacity), we are able to insure no
seeds are made unviable. When
your Bloomin paper is planted,
watered, and cared for, it will
indeed grow.

Based in Boulder, Colorado, an eco-minded community,
Bloomin embraced this attitude from the start.
We continue to add alternative energy and ecotechnologies as we grow, and we have always
manufactured the most Earth-friendly
printed marketing medium available. Our
seed paper is crafted from 100% postindustrial, recycled paper and dyed with
all-natural, vegetable-based pigments. Our
products are printed with water-based inks
and, when included, use corn-based packaging.
Our production facility is now powered by a
30kW solar power system—enough for all of our
energy needs and then some.

The Bloomin Difference
Our paper really grows! Independent lab testing confirms that Bloomin seed paper has the highest
germination rate in the trade. Our unique handmade process produces seed paper that germinates
quickly and thrives in all regions year after year. With our variety of paper grades, we can provide
solutions for any project, large or small!
Seed paper printing
Our printing process has been developed with two goals
in mind: Producing the highest print fidelity, and preserving
the highest germination rates. When printing on our seed
paper with our Earth-friendly water soluble ink-jets, we have
discovered that light ink coverage satisfies these two goals.
The same is true for letterpress printing—minimal coverage
prevents too many seeds from being crushed on the press.
While we can offer offset printing on projects that require
fast turnaround and lower costs, we do not recommend it—
germination rates are greatly reduced under the pressure of
any offset printing press. We do sell offset printable sheets that
have been made to perform best with offset printers, we just
can’t guarantee their ability to grow once they have been run
through an offset printing press.

Cutting, assembly, and quality control
Bloomin maintains hundreds of cutting dies, and can create
them to your specifications, to cut printed or unprinted
sheets into any shape your heart desires. We pioneered the
process to quickly and accurately reproduce your printed
artwork on your own custom shapes, or one of ours. Once
cut, our assembly team carefully inspects each one before
final integration as a critical step in our quality control
process. By manufacturing your job from start to finish in
one location, we insure no shortcuts are taken and quality is
maintained throughout.

We take the highest quality recycled, post-consumer/post
-industrial content and turn it into the finest raw pulp available.
By adding natural pigments to the pulp we achieve 21 bright,
yet earthy, colors. Original paper is made thick and textured,
perfect for letterpress printing or die cutting.

Fully-Plantable
Fully-Plantable Products
Many of our customers prefer our family of products that
are ”fully-plantable,” as they offer a truly ”no-waste” option.
Made entirely out of custom-printed seed paper, the entire
promotion can be planted. The paper biodegrades, leaving
the embedded seeds to bloom into wildflowers.
We offer two lines of smooth white paper for these products
made for excellent print quality: Premium and Signature (see
page 7). Premium is a bright and heavyweight option great for
direct mail. Signature is a slightly thinner, more flexible option.
These white papers print best with light ink coverage. Please

Integrated Products
Bloomin has developed and refined dozens of creative
designs that ”integrate” our colorful wildflower seed paper with
custom-printed cardstock. Called Lil’ Bloomers, this family of
products is a cost-effective option that allows the recipient to
remove the seed paper shape for planting while retaining the
printed promotion. The shape is attached by ribbon,
adhered, or fitted into slots.

Samples
Letterpress Printing
Assorted and specific samples are available upon request.
Standard shipping method is via USPS First Class mail.
Letterpress printing requires a custom plate per color, per side
and is the only printing option available for our colored seed
paper. Additional charges apply for each custom plate.
Templates
Product templates will be e-mailed in a PDF format editable
with Adobe Illustrator. Be sure to include your shape choice
when applicable.
Planting Instructions
We encourage you to include planting instructions on your
seed paper promotions. Write your own, or use the ones
included on the product templates.
Preparing Your Files
Bleed A bleed is a printed image, graphic or background that
extends beyond the trim edge. For trimming purposes, bleeds
must extend 1/8” beyond trim edge.
Live Area Live area describes the imprint area that is deemed
”safe” from trimming. It is 3/16” in from the trim edge on all sides.
Image Resolution 300-400dpi at 100%.
Color Color must be saved as CMYK. Conversions from
Pantone (PMS) to CMYK may produce unexpected results.
Included/requested PMS colors can not be exactly matched.
Letterpress Art can be submitted as line (vector) art only.
Save as PDF or EPS.
Accepted File Formats
QuarkXPress Save as PDFX-1a. Page size must be set to
the trim size of your job. Bleeds should extend 1/8” beyond
the page area.
Photoshop (CS4 or lower) Save as TIFF or JPEG, CMYK
or Grayscale, 300 to 400dpi, flattened. Image size must be
printed size plus 1/8” bleed all around if necessary.
Adobe Illustrator (CS4 or lower) Save as EPS file, fonts
converted to paths or outlines. If images are linked, please
remember to submit separately.
InDesign (CS4 or lower) Save as PDFX-1a, Press or Print
Optimized. Remember to include bleed in your PDF settings.
Publisher, Word, Powerpoint Save/export as PDF.
Printing
Printing Cardstock: Full coverage, 4-color (CMYK) process;
bleed may not be available on some products.
Printing Seed Paper Light ink coverage highly recommended
as dark, solid areas can affect germination. Slight variation in
color should be expected.
Printing Color Seed Paper: Letterpress printing only
Proofing
A purchase order and your artwork are required to begin
the proofing process. Once these are received, we will turn
around virtual proofs via e-mail to the provided addresses
within 24 hours.
Pre-Production Proofs Printer proofs, or pre-production
proofs, are available if you find it necessary to see how your
art reproduces in advance of ordering. Printer proofs are
untrimmed press sheets that indicate dielines. An additional
$40 set up-charge will apply.
Pre-Production Samples If you need a mockup of the final
piece, complete with actual die-cutting and full assembly,
an additional $90 set-up charge will apply. If a custom die is
required, it must be purchased in advance.
Turnaround Time
Standard turnaround is 5-7 working days from proof approval
to ship date. The ship date cannot be determined until approval
receipt of your proof approval and payment. Rush production is
available for an additional charge. Shipping
All orders ship UPS Ground unless otherwise instructed.
Expedited shipping and other carriers are available. Please be
sure to include your in-hands date and preferred method of
shipping on your purchase order so we can help you insure the
order arrives on time with the most affordable shipping option.
International Shipping
We have sold and shipped our products all over the world
and can help you get your seed paper anywhere. We have
the expertise to determine additional permits and certificates
that may be required, and are happy to provide you with
freight quotes and advice to insure your exporting goes
smoothly. Additional time, charges, and documentation may
apply when shipping internationally.
