American Victorian Dollhouse, Circa 1880
American-made dollhouse in the Gothic Revival style dating from
1875-1880. The house is 41 inches tall (including chimneys), 27 inches
wide and 22 1/2 inches deep (including roof). Each level of the two
story dollhouse contains two identically sized rooms separated by a
center hallway. Glazed windows on either side of the dollhouse under
the steeply pitched roof give the impression of a third story but there is
no access to this illusionary attic. The roof rests upon decorative
brackets. The facade, which simulates brownstone, has some scraps
and scratches as would be expected for a house of this age. There are
glazed windows on all four sides and there is both a front and rear
doorway. The structure has two horizontal wood cracks across the back
and one vertical crack in the front facade. However, these signs of age
have not undermined the structural integrity of the dollhouse. The
interior walls and ceilings retain their original wallpapers throughout.
The ceiling papers are in generally good condition but the wall papers
are heavily stained around the windows and there are tears, paper loss
and bubbling, to some degree, in each room. Restoration and repair of
the dollhouse was kept to a minimum. Missing glass and mullions were
replaced. A duplicate for the missing akroterium on the roof was made
from the remaining original. The dollhouse is discretely electrified.
Protective plexiglass covers were created for the doorways and one
unglazed window to keep out dust and the owner's overly inquisitive
cat.
CONDITION: Good
Estimate: $800 - $1,400

columns and front railings, two dormers and a gable atop the roof. The
distinctive Bliss moniker appears 6 times: on the front of the roof
gable, just above the window of the 2nd floor balcony and on both
sides of the interior doors. The interior is papered but only the floor
papers and the paper covering the doors are original. Old, but not
original lace curtains, frame the windows. The original paper , with
minor losses and abrasions, remains on the exterior. The right porch
railing and end post are replacements as are the chimney and front

title Moritz Gottschalk, 1892-1931. The dollhouse measures 23 inches
high (chimneys not included), 18 inches wide and 13 ½ inches deep.
There are six rooms on three levels with a working elevator. The
elevator is operated manually by means of a crank at the side of the
dollhouse. On the first level there is a water closet with its original
toilet. The windows throughout the dollhouse still have their original
lace curtains. The interior retains its original wall and floor papers with
minimal paper loss in the floor papers on the first level. There are
vertical age cracks in the wooden frame at the rear and on the right side
as are so often found in Gottschalk dollhouses. The exterior paint is
original and, for its age, is in very good condition. There is some paint
loss to the door on the second story. The flowers in the porch railings
are not original. An added feature of this particular dollhouse is a
garden that pulls out from the base at the front of the dollhouse. The
side railings of the garden are original but the front rail, while old, is a
replacement. The attractive chimneys on the roof are original.

German Green Roof Bungalow
This one room bungalow made in Germany in the first quarter of the
20th century has an unusual, and original, green roof. The house is 13
½ inches high, 14 ¼ inches wide and 13 ½ inches deep. There is no
model number. While the interior has its original wall and floor papers,
there is some paper loss in the floor and separations in the wall paper.
The two front windows are glazed with hand painted mullions. The
curtains appear to be original. The windows of the dormer at roof level
are unglazed and have pressed cardboard mullions. The cardboard
mullion of one window has detached from the frame but is inside the
dollhouse and can be put back into its proper place. The porch railings
framing the front door have distinctive circular balustrades. The rail
and balustrade on the right side required some restoration. The missing
window ledge on the right was also restored. The paper on the
interesting deep base of the dollhouse is not original. There was clear
evidence that the bungalow had front steps and two chimneys.
Replacements were crafted in keeping with the character of the
dollhouse.
CONDITION: Good
Estimate: $300 - $600

Lot 151
Vintage Dollhouse and Stable, Circa 1915-1920
This half timbered style English-made country house comes complete with
stable. The measurements of this imposing dollhouse are 45 ½ inches high, 60
inches wide and 23 ¼ inches deep. The Hosmer House is a large white two
storied dollhouse with eight interior spaces tucked under a peaked shingled
roof with a prominent double chimney perched in the center of the roof. The roof is further enhanced by
three gables, decorative pendants and carved openwork barge boards. The dark timber accents against
the white walls is visually striking. The configuration of the dollhouse involves a large center section
flanked by two smaller recessed wings. A flat panel that covers the center of the dollhouse is lifted off
entirely to reveal the interior while hinged doors swing open to reveal the inside of each wing. There are
seven glazed front windows each of which is partitioned into eight sections. The entry door is positioned
in the facade of the right wing. The right wing contains the entrance hall on the first level. A beautifully
executed staircase connects the first and second levels. The wide staircase ascends to a landing, turns
ninety degrees and continues to the second floor hallway. The hand-made needle point carpet of the
entrance is the first of six original carpets found in the dollhouse. The rugs are coordinated with the
wallpaper in the individual rooms, i.e., a motif from and the colors of the wallpaper were used in the
design of the individual carpets. Another feature of the dollhouse are its original lace curtains and velvet
parterres that enhance the formal parlor and dining room. The white curtains have some discoloration
and could do with laundering. The second floor contains a bathroom (mix of old and new fixtures), two
bedrooms and a third room which was fitted out as a library. The wallpaper of the bedrooms clearly
indicates that one was the master bedroom and the other was the children’s bedroom. In the library
which rests against the left sidewall of the house, there is evidence of an abortive attempt to open up the
side wall-for an additional window perhaps. The project was never completed (an oil painting of a street
scene in Cape May which I used to hide the scarred wall will remain with the dollhouse). The first floor
rooms from left to right are the kitchen, dining room, parlor and entrance hall. In the parlor, a succession
of marks above the picture/plate rail suggest that plates were once attached to the wall. These marks are
now covered by a 1920s tobacco cards (Irish castles and coats of arms) in individual wooden frames. I
found the cards and my husband made the frames. These will remain with the house. The parlor has a
bay window, elaborate fireplace and mantle and fretwork accenting the bay window and the doorway
between dinging room and parlor. The parlor is approximately 20 inches deep, 15 inches wide and 14
inches high. The dollhouse has been discreetly electrified. A lovely beaded wall mounted light fixture
was added to the entrance hall and this vintage fixture will remain with the dollhouse. The construction
of the stable, which is 23 inches high, 22 ¾ inches wide and 12 ½ inches deep, mimics the half-timbered
style of the main dollhouse. The stable is two stories. The first level is open and reveals two stalls. A
removable front panel gives access to the second level which appears to have been a “living” area
probably for stable hands or groomsmen. First and second levels are connected by a stairway.
CONDITION: Good (and as noted)
Estimate: $1,500 - $2,500

Lot 152
American-made Dollhouse
This very large dollhouse (it stand 60 ½ inches high, 67 inches wide
and 29 inches deep) is a replica of the historic Spicer Leaming House
situated at 664 Hughes Street in Cape May, New Jersey. The exterior
of the dollhouse (pink clapboards, gray/blue shutters and white trim)
exactly matches the colors of the Spicer Leaming House which, some
years ago, was features in ads for MAB paint in Better Homes and
Gardens Magazine and the Ladies Home Journal. The Spicer Leaming
House is an outstanding example of Gothic Revival style as found in
Victorian residential buildings. The house was noted for its distinctive
balustrades and the dove design on the barge boards of the central
gable. These features have been replicated on the dollhouse. The
interior of the dollhouse is divided into four rooms (two rooms on each
of two levels) and a third floor attic which spans the full width of the
house. The interior configuration does not reflect the interior of the
original Spicer Leaming House. The structure was designed for play.
The rooms were furnished as a parlor, bedroom, kitchen and sewing
room. A house of this size with rooms to match accommodates large
scale furniture beautifully. The walls are papered and/or painted in
colors appropriate to a Victorian era home. There are plain unpainted
plywood floors. Cardboard cut to fit and covered with cloth was
fashioned for each room. The house is lighted to give a better view of
the interior. Access is gained through the open back. Weather
conditions at the sea shore take a toll on real houses but not so for this
dollhouse. It’s exterior paint is intact and it is in very good condition
overall.

Lot 173
Vintage American Dollhouse, Circa 1900
This circa 1900 American made dollhouse measures 42 inches high, 36
inches wide and 26 inches deep. The architectural style of the
dollhouse, defined by its two prominent turrets, imposing chimneys and
wrap-around porch is appropriately termed Queen Anne. Although the
configuration of the windows suggests a third floor, the dollhouse has
only two levels. The interior is unfinished; each level is a large open
space. Access to the inside is gained through the back. A panel is
removed from the side of the porch and the back wall of each level
slides out completely giving full and easy access to the interior. The
dollhouse has 36 windows, two front doors and two rear doors. The
uppermost windows have interesting patterned glass. When purchased,
the dollhouse was painted entirely green and white-the predominant
colors for American houses in the 1930s and 40s. However, remnants
of the original wine, gold and gray colors were visible and the
dollhouse was repainted in these colors. Except for paint, the rough
textured exterior walls of the dollhouse were left in their original
condition. A missing metal turret and the outer most portion of the
circular porch roof were replaced. The lower portion of houses of this
style and vintage would have been enclosed; lattice of some kind was
often used. For this reason, skirting was added around the base of the
dollhouse to give the impression of wood lattice. The photo of the
dollhouse shows figures on the porch. In fact, there is a blushing bride,
nervous groom and the minister in his robes. Netting and orange
blossoms adorn the porch. These figures and accessories are not
included.
CONDITION: Good
Estimate: $800 - $1,200

Lot 174
German Red Roof Dollhouse, Circa 1956
A German Red Roof dollhouse produced in 1956 by the firm of
Herbert Donalek. This dollhouse is pictured in Cieslik and Kohler’s
Lexikon der Puppenstuben und Puppenhauser (Dictionary of Dollhouse
Rooms and Dollhouses). The dollhouse is 32 ¾ inches high, 29 inches
wide and 17 ¼ inches deep (dollhouse including projecting side yard;
14 inches deep for the dollhouse alone). The dollhouse continues the
German style of dollhouses with a red roof and yellow walls. However,
particular features of this dollhouse give it a distinctly modern look,
e.g., sliding glass windows, the doors and balustrades, the second story
open patio, and striped cloth awning. The side yard, set up for a cook
out with a grill and picnic table, is enclosed by a wood fence with a
swing. The inside of the dollhouse has four rooms on three levels. The
first floor contains a kitchen and living room. The second floor has the
master bedroom and a child’s bedroom is nestled under the roof. A
detachable stairway connects the first and seconds floors. The interior
is entirely papered and is wired for electricity. A few pieces of the
furniture that originally came with the dollhouse (including a wardrobe,
credenza and night table) are still in the dollhouse. Furniture and
accessories reminiscent of the 1950s and 60s was added. A bit of
whimsey has also been added to the dollhouse. Dorothy, from the
Wizard of Oz, is peering out from the second floor porch while the
Straw Man relaxes in the living room. They are waiting for the Lion
Man and the Tin Man. The furniture, accessories and figures are being
sold with the dollhouse.

Lot 251
Silber and Fleming Vintage Dollhouse
A striking regency era ,circa 1830-40, English dollhouse by Silber and
Fleming. This 2 story box back type dollhouse slides perfectly and snuggly into
place on a dark wooden base fitted with casters. It has an imposing portico with
pediment and marbleized columns. The front door is embellished with a brass
lion head and ring door knocker and glass transom above. There are eight
glazed front windows with hand painted mullions and keystones. The façade is
painted a creamy white with an overall brick pattern. Substantial wood quoins define the corners. A
green pediment on the roof matches the shape of the pediment on the front portico. Original bale handles
are still attached to both sides. Markings on the base suggest that a railing of some kind once extended
across the front. Marbelizing on the front portico may not be original. The interior of the dollhouse is
divided into four rooms and a first floor hallway with stairs. Consistent with English houses of the times,
each room has a fireplace centered on the back wall. Three of the fireplace inserts, including the largest
one in the kitchen, are by Evans and Cartwright. The house is papered throughout. The wallpaper of the
kitchen, the hallway and at least one additional room appear to be original. Wallpapers in the other
rooms, while old, are not original. Remnants of the older wallpaper can be seen in places. Condition of
the wallpaper varies by room. There are some tears, some paper loss and discoloration consistent with
the age of the dollhouse. The floors are either painted (original) or cloth covered (very old, likely
original). The stairs appear to have their original carpet runner. The front windows have elaborate
curtains made from Stripped or solid silk, lace and fringe. The curtains are intact but in need of cleaning.
Accessories remaining in the dollhouse kitchen include an open cupboard, platerack, some crockery and
a rug. The dollhouse measures 30” high, 29 ¾ inches wide and 16 5/8 “ deep.
CONDITION: Good (condition as noted)
Estimate: $2,000 - $4,000
Lot 252
American Colonial Revival Dollhouse, Circa 1930-1940
A two story American-made dollhouse in the Colonial Revival style and the
white and green colors so popular in the USA during the 1930s and 1940s. The
dollhouse has six rooms in the main house and a seventh room, the kitchen, is
placed in an adjacent wing. Two separate panels cover the front of the main
house and the kitchen wing and, once removed, give full and easy access to the interior of the dollhouse.
Architectural details include the dormer window centered in the main roof, dual chimneys and window
boxes (I had these added to the dollhouse). The interior is painted (dark floors and pastel walls) and

Lot 253
American Dollhouse, Circa 1973-1975
First House, so called because it was the first acquisition in what
eventually evolved into the dollhouse collection of the Dollhouse and
Miniature Museum of Cape May, is American-made and was built by a
gentleman named Thompson (no allusion to Noel Thomas intended)
between 1973 to 1975. The dollhouse was created from the top portion
of a vintage hutch. The dollhouse has three stories, nine rooms and a
central staircase which extends from the first to the third level. One
room is clearly a kitchen complete with linoleum floor. The floor and
wall tiling in another room denotes the bathroom. A large room on the
first floor is embellished with a fireplace and a hand painted mural
(rustic woodsy scenery) on all three walls. The built in bookcases in yet
another room designate it as the library. The two large rooms on the
second level have a more formal air that suggests they be used as the
parlor and dining room. The third floor rooms work well as master and
children’s bedrooms. With the exception of the kitchen and bathroom,
all of the rooms have finished wooden floors and wainscoting. The
parquet pattern and the style of the wainscoting differs in each room!
Paint and or paper complete the treatment of the interior walls. Portions
of the dollhouse are wired for electricity. The light fixtures attached to
these wires will remain. The dollhouse has a Mansard type roof which
is shingled. The dollhouse is accessed from the front which is
completely unobstructed. When originally purchased the dollhouse had
glass doors (left over from the original hutch). These were removed as
they added an enormous amount of weight to the structure, took up a
great deal of space when open and obstructed the view of the interior.
The sides and back of the dollhouse are painted sky blue. The
dollhouse rests on a platform which has attached castors for ease of
mobility. The dollhouse is in very good condition and is 55” high, 69”
wide and 16 “ deep.
