Kalgoorlie Boulder’s thriving days of glory
began in 1893 when three down–on–their–luck
Irishmen, Patrick Hannan, Tom Flanagan and
Daniel Shea stumbled across 100 ounces of
alluvial nuggets when they were forced to stop
to replace a shoe for their horse. Hannan rode
through to Coolgardie and registered the claim
on 17 June 1893, and so it was through the
ensuing Goldrush that Kalgoorlie was born.
Kalgoorlie Boulder is still one of the world’s
biggest gold mining cities, and that feeling
of excitement and discovery is still in the air
today.
Both Kalgoorlie and Boulder have beautiful
examples of Goldrush architecture to explore.
Walking down the main street in Kalgoorlie is,
for many, like going back in time. You will find
great examples of architecture from bygone
eras, including such gems as the City Markets
(1901), Government Buildings (1899), the York,
Palace, and Exchange Hotels and The Kalgoorlie
Miner building (1900).

To make the most of the historic CBD, why
not try the Kalgoorlie Walking Tour? You can
collect a headset from the Kalgoorlie Boulder
Pure Gold and explore at your leisure. Wander
between more than 35 historic attractions and
discover a nugget of history about each one.
Available 7 days a week, $12 per person.
Kalgoorlie Boulder Pure Gold is located within
the walls of the Kalgoorlie Town Hall (1908).
A tribute statue to Paddy Hannan sits outside
the building welcoming visitors old and new –
whilst the original is kept inside the Town Hall
for safe keeping.
At the top end of Hannan Street, underneath
an original poppet head, more treasures can be
found at the WA Museum Kalgoorlie Boulder.
The displays of historical memorabilia regale
amazing tales from the early pioneers of the
City. The history of mining in Kalgoorlie Boulder
is a fascinating journey - a celebration of
innovation, ingenuity and sheer hard work.

For more history and a real hands-on
experience, visit the Hannans North Tourist
Mine. For a small entry fee you can explore the
historical Hannans North attractions including
a KCGM haul truck, wheel loader, the Daisy
Mae engine room, and a self-guided tour of the
historical buildings and equipment. While you
are there, you can try your hand at old style
gold panning, have a picnic in the Chinese
Gardens or make use of the BBQ facilities.
Hannans North Tourist Mine is located off the
Goldfields Highway, for further information
please contact 9022 1664.
Kalgoorlie and Boulder owe much of their
success to the engineering skills and vision
of CY O’Connor. O’Connor was responsible
for the design and construction of a pipeline
which was to supply much needed water to
the region. The pipeline was opened in 1903,
delivering fresh clean water from Perth to the
Mount Charlotte Reservoir in Kalgoorlie.
The original pipeline is still in use and remains
the lifeline that supplies water to the region
today.
With a guaranteed supply of fresh water and
ever increasing finds of gold, the population of
Kalgoorlie and Boulder swelled as men came
by the thousands to find their fortune on the
Goldfields. With the influx of single men, so too
came the demand for goods and services.
One such notorious service was provided by the
local brothels. At one time, there were at least
25 brothels in the Hay Street area. There is now
only one surviving brothel in Kalgoorlie today.
Although they still open their doors for original
form of business, Questa Casa also opens its
doors to tourists to take part in a brothel tour
to learn about this colourful part of Kalgoorlie
Boulder history.
painted drop curtain and believed to be one of
the last surviving examples of Goatcher’s work.
Like Kalgoorlie, the main street of Boulder,
Burt Street, boasts many architectural beauties.
The most notable of these include the Palace
Theatre (1930) and its art deco design, the Court
Hotel (1900), the Loopline Railway Museum and
Information Centre and the Boulder Town Hall.
At the top end of Burt Street is the Loopline
Railway Museum and Information Centre.
The museum celebrates what was once one
of the busiest railways in Australia, with more
than 100 trains departing the station every day!
Open 7 days a week, this is a great stop to find
out about the Railway’s history and get some
local information.
The Boulder Town Hall was completed in
1908 and houses another piece of amazing
craftsmanship, The Phillip Goatcher Curtain.
The Goatcher Curtain is an exquisite hand
In the heart of the main street of Boulder
stands the Miners Monument, a proud
statue erected in tribute to the miners of the
Goldfields - past, present and future. It is a
powerful reminder of the blood sweat and
tears that have been shed for many a golden
dream.
As you walk up Burt Street, you will be enticed
to unearth Boulder’s many hidden secrets; the
Little Boulder Sweet Shop, and a mineshaft in
the front bar of the Metropole Hotel to name
but a few.

If you’re a lover of nature and the great
outdoors, you’ll delight in the natural
woodlands, trails and leisure parks in and
around the City. Kalgoorlie Boulder is situated
on the edge of the largest temperate
woodlands on earth.
Spanning 16 million hectares, it is home to
almost 20% of the country’s known plant
species. The Great Western Woodlands, also
known as the Goldfields Woodlands, have
been kept largely intact because of their
remoteness and unsuitability for agriculture.
(Source: Department of Environment and
Conservation.) Visit www.wilderness.org.au
A showcase of the woodlands can be seen
at Karlkurla Park (pronounced ‘gull-gurl-la’),
200 hectares of bush land on the northern
outskirts of the City. Enjoy one of the many
walking trails which meander through the
park and marvel at the Gimlets, Salmon
Gums, and Wildflowers. A viewing platform
is located in the heart of the park, offering
superb 360 degree views of surrounding
bush lands - a majestic sight, particularly
at sunrise or sunset. For more information

Coolgardie (Mother of the Goldfields),
located 558 kilometers east of Perth and
38 kilometers from Kalgoorlie-Boulder, was
the first settlement of the Western Australia
Eastern Goldfields.
Coolgardie saw the biggest movement
of people in Australian History when gold
was found at Fly Flat back in 1892 by
Arthur Bayley and William Ford. Although
the town’s population has decreased since
then, Coolgardie has retained many of its
magnificent buildings associated with its rich
and colourful past. Today it offers tourists a
fabulous heritage precinct.
There is plenty to see and do in and around
Coolgardie and visitors should allow at least a
day to ensure they don’t miss the Goldfields
Exhibition Museum, Warden Finnerty’s
Residence, the Pioneer and Coolgardie
Cemeteries, Ben Prior’s Park, and a walk
along Bayley Street to view the heritage
architecture.

Then there are a multitude of day trips such
as Burra Rocks; Cave Hill Nature Reserve; Mt
Burgess; the Gorge featuring remains of an
extinct volcano; the Kunanalling Hotel ruins;
75 kilometres to the south is Widgiemooltha’s
Larkinville Mine where the largest gold
nugget ever found in WA was discovered in
1931; Victoria Rock; Rowles Lagoon; and Jack
Carins’ Camp - where prospector Jack Carins
lived in isolation for 30 years.

Coolgardie Day is celebrated each year and
coincides with the Kalgoorlie Boulder Race
Round.
Kambalda is located 75 kilometres south
east of Coolgardie and 616 kilometres east
of Perth. Nestled in beautiful bush land, this
quiet mining community offers a restful place
to relax and visit.
Originally founded in 1897 as a gold mining
town during the Goldrush frenzy, Kambalda
was all but was deserted by 1908.
The township came alive again during the
1960’s nickel ‘boom’ which resulted in the
discovery of one of the worlds largest nickel
sulphide deposits in the area and the opening
of Australia’s first nickel mine.
There are picnic and camping facilities at
outback nature reserves with some striking
granite outcrops, rain sculpted caves, dams
and a diversity of landscapes.
Kambalda also offers an abundance of
recreational facilities and activities such as
golf, open air swimming pools, bush walking,
24hr Gymnasium and Library. On a windy day
the occasional Landyacht can be seen sailing
on Lake Lefroy.
Kambalda hosts the annual Nickeltown Car,
Ute and Bike Show every October.
Kambalda was reborn!
Today Kambalda is much more than ‘just
another mining town’. You can experience the
panoramic views and shimmering silver of
massive Lake Lefroy and enjoy the local flora
and fauna on the Red Hill walking trail to the
lookout.
