EMPOWERING YOUNG RESEARCHERS IN EUROPE: ENGAGEMENT AND PARTICIPATION PROGRAMME Eurodoc Conference 2015 Workshop 2 Improving Gender Equality in Junior Researchers Career Development Facilitator: Carole Chapin – Eurodoc, Coordinator for the Gender Equality Working Group Rapporteur: Maria Bostenaru ‐ Marie Curie Fellows Association m‐WiSET The 2012 Eurodoc survey on gender equality among early‐stage researchers, as well as wider researches such as the She Figures report, have underlined the “leaking pipeline” phenomenon which appears after the completion of the PhD. Then, it seems relevant to focus on career’s development for early‐stage researchers, trying to understand the paths in which a more fair system, or different tools, could lead to more equality. This workshop aims to look at two of them: 1) Mobility (14h45‐15h15): Maria Bostenaru for Marie Curie Fellows Association m‐WiSET WG + open discussion The report on the outcome of the ESOF (Euroscience Open Forum) 2014 session on Gender Equality shows the impact of mobility on academic careers. It also shows where inequalities stand and how to develop new concepts of mobility (virtual, intersectorial and interdisciplinary) to foster career development and gender balance in Europe. 2) Language (15h30‐16h00): Carole Chapin for Eurodoc Gender Equality WG + open discussion Some recent studies wonder how gendered / not gendered lexical choices – for instance in a job offer – have an impact on the reception of the message. Thus, it became more common for institutions, universities or publishing houses to recommend a non‐sexist use of the language. The gender equality working group started a survey on this matter, in order to measure the diversity of positions among Eurodoc countries, the impact on early‐stage researchers, and eventually to define guidelines for Eurodoc’s further practices.
