TICK TALK
A fellow mushroom hunter
recently forwarded an
email to me about “getting out wood ticks”. It
involved using a glob of liquid soap on a cotton ball and
smothering the little critter for 20
seconds after which it would yield
its grip, panting and gasping, and
come back in the cotton ball.
Sounded good to me, but not to
the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention. According to
them, old-school methods such
as burning or smothering are not
recommended. Here’s what the
CDC recommends:
10 FATHER’S DAY
SUGGESTIONS FOR UNDER $20
y grilling accessories (spatula, fork, tongs)
y flashlight (floatable, if he’s a fisherman)
y chocolate-covered coffee beans
y Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader
y favorite team hat
y fishing lures
y golf balls
y car caddy
y six pack of micro-brew beer
y Amana steaks or chops
1. Use fine-tipped tweezers to
grasp the tick as close to the
skin’s surface as possible.
2. Pull upward with
steady, even pressure.
Don’t twist or jerk the tick;
this can cause the mouth-parts
to break off and remain in the
skin. If this happens, remove the
mouth-parts with tweezers. If you
are unable to remove the mouth
easily with clean tweezers, leave it
alone and let the skin heal.
3. After removing the tick,
thoroughly clean the bite area
and your hands with rubbing alcohol, an iodine scrub, or soap and
water.
Pure corn
“Where is everybody?” the cowpoke asked.
“They’ve all gone to see Brown Paper Pete hang,”
said a bystander.
“Why do they call him that?” the cowboy asked.
“Well, he always wears a brown paper hat, a brown
paper shirt, and brown paper trousers.”
“Really?” said the cowboy. “And what
are they hanging him for?”
“Rustling.”

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU VISITED THE
COUNTRY MARKETPLACE?
When I moved from Wisconsin to Iowa in 1982, some new friends
introduced me to the bakeries and country stores scattered between
Independence and Fairbank. I was totally lost on the gravel roads…
and I didn’t mind it a bit. Each stop brought me home to the smells
of childhood summers: cinnamon rolls, wood smoke, country air and
road apples.
Thirty years later I’m not so lost, and still look forward to
each daytrip to the Country Marketplace. It’s a great family outing,
girls’ day out or mini-vacation for two. With restaurants, motels and
campgrounds accessible it’s a delicious break from the routine without
breaking the bank.
Use the map to locate dozens of shops and services, and say
hello to our advertisers.
