2015 Presidential Seminar What is a Tejano? Evolving Hispanic Identity in Texas Presented by Dr. Frank de la Teja April 15 at 5:00 PM Flowers Room 230 From the arrival of the first Anglo-American settlers under Stephen F. Austin, a distinction between Texans began to form. Relegated to minority status in their own homeland by the 1830s, Texans of Mexican heritage had to accept a hyphenated identity while EuroAmerican immigrants quickly became “Texans.” Frank de la Teja’s presentation provides a historical understanding of the way in which Texas Mexican Americans were defined, defined themselves, and in the late 20th century have sought to establish non-hyphenated identities that serve their own understanding of Texas’s Mexican heritage. Refreshments will be provided Open to the general public For information contact the History Department (512) 245-2142 or email Dr. Mary Brennan at [email protected] If you require accommodations due to a disability, please contact the History department at least 72 hours in advance of the event.
