A R Z U S T U D I O H O P E MISSION AND IMPACT
MISSION
ARZU, meaning “hope”, transforms lives by empowering Afghan women to lift themselves and their families out of poverty
through ethical, artisan-based employment, education, and access to healthcare, thereby changing the way they see the
world and their place in it.
ARZU was founded in 2004 as a social business enterprise with one clear mission: to empower Afghan women through
sustainable employment.
Starting with 30 rug weavers, ARZU employs some 700 Afghans, 95% of whom are women. Net proceeds from the sales of
our two flagship products: award-winning, hand-knotted ARZU STUDIO HOPE rugs created by highly-skilled artisans and
trendy Peace Cord® bracelets woven by the unskilled, elderly, or challenged, directly benefit Afghan women, their families
and their communities. ARZU is arguably one of Afghanistan’s largest private employers of women and impacts the lives of
thousands of others due to the ripple effects of our broad-based community development programs.
Beyond paying living wages through quality incentive bonuses, ARZU creates lasting impact in the region through the
holistic delivery of critical services: education of women through adult literacy, computer, and English classes; preschool
education for children; maternal healthcare for pregnant women; housing for the homeless; parks and playgrounds for
families; and clean water and nutrition initiatives for the community. This ecosystem of jobs and benefits produces tangible,
positive change and sows the seeds of stability in this war torn country.
IMPACT
2014 marks ARZU’s 10th anniversary successfully operating in “the world’s worst place to be a woman.”
• ARZU weavers earn 68% more than the average per capita Afghan income.
• Women, who initially “signed” for wages with a thumbprint, now read, write and do math at a 5th grade level.
• Since 2006, ARZU has not lost a single mother or child during childbirth in a country with one of the highest
maternal death rates in the world.
• Some 300 women per month, formerly confined to their homes, now come through the doors of ARZU’s two
Women’s Community Centers to access the classrooms, tearoom, and laundry mat and to build lasting friendships.
• 600 pounds of fresh produce grown and dehydrated at ARZU’s 2-acre Women’s Co-op Garden help feed formerly
malnourished women and children.
• Greenery at ARZU’s 5-acre Central Park can be seen from the air in the otherwise barren landscape.
• A dozen formerly homeless families now live in ARZU’s low-income housing.
• Children graduating from ARZU’s three preschools are the stars of first grade in government schools.
• English and computer classes create a bridge for women and teen girls to the broader world
outside their own villages.

A R Z U S T U D I O H O P E ONE WEAVER’S STORY
ZAHRA
My name is Zahra. I am 45 years old. I am a mother of five
daughters and three sons. When the Taliban came to Bamyan,
my family and I were forced to flee our farm, leaving everything
behind, to live as refugees in Pakistan. Life in the refugee camp
was very hard and my husband and I could not provide for our
children. I tried to earn a living as a weaver in Pakistan but even
though I worked tirelessly, my wage was never enough to even
cover basic household items or to feed everyone.
After the defeat of the Taliban, we returned to Bamyan to find
our home and farm destroyed. Once again, we had nothing. In
2005, ARZU came to our village and I joined the carpet-weaving
program. I have been working for ARZU ever since. With the
money I have earned, we built a three-room home and even
have a TV, satellite dish and computer. With the help of ARZU’s
literacy program, I am now literate and my children attend
Government Schools. My youngest child attends the ARZU
preschool. My oldest daughter and son both go to the University.
This organization is the window of hope for my family and me.

RUG DETAILS & FACTS
• ARZU STUDIO HOPE rugs are hand-knotted with 100% sheep’s wool on looms in the homes of our weavers and our
Women’s Community Centers.
• Wool is hand dyed with natural materials whenever possible, including madder root for red, walnut husks for brown
and pomegranate for yellow.
• Our hand-spun wool absorbs dye unevenly to produce variegated color - known as abrash. This charming irregularity creates authentic character and is a hallmark of a handmade rug.
• Depending on the weave type and intricacy of the pattern, rugs range from 120 to 275 knots per square inch.
• The Persian knot is typically utilized in our Classic Traditional patterns, while the Turkish knot is prevalent in our Tribal Heirloom designs. Both knot styles are found in our Modern + Contemporary collection.
• Rugs in our Classic Traditional and Tribal Heirloom collections are most often sheared with a pile height ranging from 4 to 6
mm in order to showcase the intricacy of the design; while our Modern + Contemporary, The Designer Series and Masters
collections have a 6 to 8 mm pile height for a plusher feel.
• Fringe may be exposed or tucked under, depending on the design. If exposed, the fringe length typically measures 3/4” long.
• A subtle “h” woven into the corner of each rug is our mark of authenticity and symbolically brings “hope” into every space.
The artisan’s individual story accompanies each rug, underscoring the global connection.

through a select group of retailers around the United States.

CUSTOM CAPABILITIES
ARZU STUDIO HOPE offers three levels of rug customization. Please refer to the Lead Time chart below
and Pricing chart on the following page for more information regarding these options.
LEVEL 1 : Order a rug in a pre-existing pattern, color combination and standard size from ARZU STUDIO HOPE’S
design library. Lead time and pricing is consistent with the Lead Time and Pricing charts.
LEVEL 2 : Select a pattern from our extensive design library, and change the size and/or color to meet your desired
specifications. ARZU has a palette of 180 colors to choose from, as well as the opportunity to select custom colors
based on the Benjamin Moore Classic Color Fan that we will dye to order. Based on your specifications, our Creative
Director will provide a digital rendering for your approval. Changes in color and/or size specifications will incur
additional fees as noted in the custom up-charge section on the Pricing Chart, as well as one additional month to our
Lead Time chart. Please note that certain Tribal Heirloom and Classic Traditional patterns may have size limitations
due to the design.
LEVEL 3 : Our Creative Director will work directly with you to create an original rug design based on an inspiration
or sketch that you provide. She will then produce a computer rendering to meet your design specifications. Custom
design work will incur additional fees above any custom color and size charges. For this option, please add two
months to the lead time as indicated in our chart.
For all customization options, once the design rendering has been approved and your deposit payment has been
processed, production will begin on your custom rug.
