CaTS technology overview
•
Wireline, coiled tubing, or completion
conveyed
•
Setting options include:
• nipple profile
• below a bridge plug, or
• clamped externally to well tubulars
•
Pressure / temperature data is encoded
and transmitted up the completion via an
Electromagnetic (EM) signal
•
Signal is collected at surface using a
topside receiver, decoded and stored
locally, or transmitted onwards

CaTS benefits
•
CaTS is not affected by cement or bridge plugs
• ideal where a well or zone is to be permanently abandoned
•
No requirement for a cabled connection to the downhole system
• means no requirement for feed-throughs or penetrations of the bridge
plugs, packers, tubing hanger or xmas tree
Being an electrical signal, the signal pick-up can be located anywhere on the
wellhead structure
•
•
Standard intervention equipment and procedures are used to deploy and
retrieve the CaTS technology
•
CaTS technology does not require a tubing or completion string in the well
• data can be transmitted through the casing or liner

CaTS features
•
The CaTS technology can be retrofitted into an existing well.
•
The CaTS EM telemetry is addressable therefore enabling multiple CaTS
installations into a single well for multi-zone monitoring
•
The CaTS technology is through-tubing retrievable and can be redressed /
batteries replaced for re-installation (if required)
•
By using a CaTS relay station(s) there is no limit to the achievable
transmission range

The value of ART on the Clair Ridge appraisal
•
18 months of high quality reservoir data recovered at low incremental
well cost
•
The correlation of the reservoir pressure responses and trends between the
Clair Phase1 platform and the Clair Ridge appraisal well provided clear
evidence of reservoir connectivity
•
Cost effective ART in an abandoned subsea appraisal well provided high
value data to steer the future development planning on Clair

Well integrity
Pressure barriers and verification requirements
Norsok guidelines:
“There should be two well barriers available during all well activities and
operations, including suspended or abandoned wells where pressure differential
exists that may cause uncontrolled outflow from the borehole / well to the
external environment”
..........also states that for initial verification:
“When the well barrier has been constructed, its integrity and function shall be
verified by means of leak testing by the application of differential pressure” or to
perform “verification by other specified methods”

Well integrity
Verification challenges of double barriers
•
The sealing integrity of the deepest barrier can be verified by the
application of a differential pressure from surface and using surface
pressure sensing equipment
•
Due to the relatively small volume of fluid trapped between the upper and
lower plugs, compared with the large volume of fluid above the plug, the
application of pressure from surface, when used with surface pressure
monitoring equipment, will not be able to verify the sealing integrity of the
upper plug
•
CCL used to deploy the upper plug as a signal pick-up, a solution was
identified that allowed the pressure from below the upper plug to be
transmitted to surface in real time when the differential pressure test from
surface was being applied

Well integrity
The value of barrier integrity testing
•
By running a CaTS gauge below the upper bridge plug in a dual barrier
sealing configuration it has been possible to verify, in real time, the sealing
integrity of the upper barrier placed in the well
•
Requiring only a single run in hole to set and verify the plug resulted in a
cost effective and operationally efficient abandonment campaign
•
No penetrations meaning no compromise to the integrity of the well or
barriers
•
Compatibility with any third party plug supplier provides for flexibility in
vendor selection
