STOCK GAYLARD OAK FAIR
Welcome to our fifth Stock Gaylard Oak Fair.
As usual there is plenty to do and see around the site and we
believe the Oak Fair continues to offer outstanding value for
money.
This year the main feature is our exhibition, The Rebirth
of aa
-birthof
Dorset Oak. As many of you are aware, Adams Axemen felled an
oak tree last year using only axes and a two handled saw mixed
with a lot of sweat. This tree was planted in 1850 and had died in
2005 possibly as a result of water damage to its root system
(we found it had been planted over a drain). Much of the wood
has been distributed to our exhibitors and other craftsmen
around Dorset and the neighbouring counties to create furniture,
works of art etc. The exhibition, which includes pieces by highly
experienced woodworkers as well as amateur enthusiasts and
children, is to be found in the marquee near the church.
Once again I hope you have a relaxing and enjoyable day around
our beautiful oaks.

Bagatelle
(1.15pm in Stock Gaylard tent)
Don’t miss this lively group of
acapella singers presenting world,
folk and contemporary songs
with gusto. Bagatelle are based
in Weymouth and were formed
13 years ago. They meet once a
week and have performed at
concerts, folk clubs and
weddings within the county.
They sing some familiar pieces
but usually add their own harmonies. Increasingly they are
writing their own songs.
www.stockgaylard.com
The Stock Gaylard Estate has assorted kiln
& air dried timber for sale. Please take a
look at some of what is currently available
in the Stock Gaylard Courtyard or call
Jamie Ross on 07970 124527 if you have
specific requirements, or wish to hire the
kiln.

PROJECT FOR 2009
VICTORIAN SUMMER HOUSE
IN THE DEER PARK
You may have noticed the
summerhouse in the Deer Park when
taking one of our tractor rides.
It is in need of some attention and this
is our project for 2009/2010 so we
hope by next year it will be restored to
its former glory.
Why not take a ride today so you will
be able to see the before & after
condition.

Solitary Bees
The vast majority of bees are solitary and live to supply a single cell
nest rather than working with many bees in a shared nest.
There are around 200 species of solitary bees who, like their more
sociable cousins feed on nectar and pollen.
For example, some solitary bees nest in the ground and seal the
nest with soil, these are called Mining Bees. Others nest inside the
hollow stems of plants or inside holes and crevices in brickwork,
dead trees or fence posts, sealing the nest with mud, Mason bees.
While Leafcutter bees nest in soft, rotted wood and thick-stemmed
pithy plants.
If left alone, these bees will often nest in the same area year after
year and provide an important annual service pollinating early
flowering fruit trees and shrubs, garden flowers and commercial
crops. So helping them ensures good crops later in the year.
Bees are star pollinators but they are becoming scarce, fewer wild
flowers, a lack of suitable nesting sites and an increase in pesticide
use has led many species to suffer a population decline. Around 25
per cent of our native bees are listed as endangered species.
Finding nest sites has become crucially important for our bee
population. You can give them a helping hand, improve pollination in
your garden and give your family a lot of pleasure.
Create a bee garden by planting flowers attractive to bees this
will encourage them to visit your garden. The most important
element of a bee garden is the type and number of different
flower species it contains.
However you can put a Solitary Bee Hive almost anywhere in a
garden, along a fence, by a flower bed, around mulch piles or
anywhere you have seen bees foraging.
For further information and to have a go at building your own solitary
bee hive visit the Bee Happy stand in conservation row.
