THE BRICKLAYERS FAMILY.
INTRODUCTORY NOTES.
This is a genealogical story of the Bedingham Fairhead’s who descend from James (the Bricklayer) and Elizabeth (nee
Barber). It is a branch, which comes from the Parish Clerk section, and is not claimed to hold any interest except to those it
concerns, in fact it may be found to be dull in its repetition.
I (Albert) have found through trial and error that the best way of dealing with families is to deal with each generation in
turn. This has been done and it hoped that readers would have no difficulty in following the course of recorded happenings. The
value of this composition is in its preservation of the records, which after lengthy and difficult researches would be lost.
The story is very incomplete and doubtless further information will come to hand from time to time. It is believed to be a
true account of the records and happenings of this great family, but work of this nature is bound to open up questions as to its
validity and although it cannot be guaranteed that every item is factual, it should be stated that it is faithfully built from the
material available.
The dates given are of Baptism or Birth where the letter 'b' is used and the letter ‘c’ shows estimated dates.
Doubtless a number of readers will fault some of the statements made and may be able to give a truer account of the
happenings. This can be only part of the full story and any additions will be most welcome.

Since the death of Albert (in 1976) material has been gathered by the late Mr. G.T. Fairhead, myself and fellowship
members in general and added to Albert's work to give a fuller and more informative story. This record is compiled from Albert's
original book and the new information collected since that time. It should be noted that the generation numbers do not start at
one, but carry on from a previous booklet, in this case The Parish Clerk, which in turn carried on from the Suffolk Weavers.
Where places are described as a ‘District’, this is the Registration District where the event was registered. These were
introduced in 1837, and the names and boundaries of many of these Districts have changed over the years since. A list of these

The Bricklayers Family.
It was on the 9th September 1781 that James Fairhead (1573) was christened, the son of Samuel (1575) the
Clerk to the Parish of Bedingham. Samuel had the previous year taken this job over from his grandfather, William (441), who had
held the post for 59 years. Little did he realize that he was to remain Parish Clerk for more than half a century, Grandfather &
Grandson held the post for a total of 112 years.
James (1575), unlike his forebears, decided to quit the land, except for a small piece surrounding the house, to learn the skill
of Bricklaying. In those days before the industrial revolution almost all country boys were expected to become land workers as
there was little else, but this was not for James, and doubtless today in many a building in that Norfolk village, its bricks and
mortar were applied by him.
Nevertheless, doubtless James was regarded as a rebel, rebelling from nature’s work on the land, a Fairhead inheritance in
those days. How many parents would warn a son that "no good would come from breaking away from tradition", but James was to
become a Bricklayer, and nothing prevented this.
On Christmas Day of 1802 he accompanied Elizabeth Barber (1574) up the aisle at Bedingham Church and made her Mrs.
James Fairhead. Elizabeth was the daughter of a Gardener at Woodton Hall, although others of her family were farmers who
farmed at Bedingham and the neighbouring Topcroft. James was 21 years of age and Elizabeth 19 and from 1803 to 1823 the

A remarkable family of 6 males and 4 females from which perhaps the greatest number of Fairhead’s today owe their
existence.
Elizabeth (1574) died on the 24th April 1832 at Bedingham at the age of 49 years. James (1575) died on the 6th May 1854, his
age given on the death certificate as 75 years. A memorial stone in Bedingham churchyard gives his age as 79 years, but according
to the church register he was in his 73rd year. This would seem to be the correct age bearing in mind that he was the son of the
Parish Clerk and one would expect that his father recorded his birth correctly.

continued in his father's occupation as a Bricklayer, and also took over his grandfather's job as Parish
Clerk, so this clerkship was handed down from grandfather to grandson twice, thus :First

Records give Samuel (1577) as Parish Clerk in 1836 and also in 1861, and Kelly's Directory mentions him as Clerk in
1883. This would possibly bring the total period of Clerkship to over 150 years for the three successive Fairhead’s. It must surely
be a record.

Postscript.
It must be added in order to put the record straight, that Richard 1754 (487) (another grandson of William 1697) did the
job of Clerk before Samuel 1761 (1575) took over. He possibly relieved William during times of indisposition or at a period of old
age, but he died at the young age of 28 years, two years before William died, which suggests that his term of office was short.
However, records state that William held office for 59 years and Samuel for 53 years.

At the time of the 1851 Census only five of Samuel and Susan’s children are listed as being at home with them. James,
Rachel, Jacob, John and “Makiah”, which is probably a misspelling of Maria, and a Grandson, William Fairhead (1624), aged 1.
This William is most likely the son of Mary (1588) (see page 7). A point of interest is that Jacob, then aged 10, is listed as an Ag
Lab.
Susan (1587) died on the 29th August 1851 aged 43 years, Samuel
years. Again a case of the man outliving the woman.
Hannah 1805

died on the 7th January 1885, his age given as 82
married James Clarke (1597) on the 5th September 1826 at Bedingham, Norfolk. It is not known what
happened to James, but on the 9 th March 1832, Hannah married Charles Browes Jr. (4876) (b abt 1805 Denton) at Denton, Norfolk.
Charles died in 1887, and Hannah aft. 1881, both at Denton.

Bedingham, Norfolk. Both parties were stated to be 19 years old, although from the age stated on her Memorial Card she would

It appears that John gave up the shoemaking business and like a true Fairhead submitted to the farming urge. For a period
he farmed at Woodton, the farm being eventually handed over to his youngest son Ezra Dan.
The family moved from Woodton to Alburgh where John continued farming, the shoemaking business now having been
taken over by his son Michael John.
At the time of the 1851 Census there is a family listed as Fairstead living at Bedingham. This could be the family above,
the name being mistyped during the extraction of the records. It lists John 1815, a shoemaker, wife Mary, and 7 children. Five of
them match with those in the list above, namely Esther, Martha, Mark, Phoebe and Frederick. It does not list Emily 1835,
Michael John 1836 or Jonathan 1840, but it does list Michael 1838 and Jonathan 1842. If this is the same family, it is quite
probable that Emily, then aged 16, was living elsewhere, more than likely in service. Also it could be that Michael John and
Jonathan died in infancy and were replaced by the two in the census.
Mary died on the 23rd April 1890 at the age of 73 while John outlived her to the age of 88 years, dying on the 29th
December 1903. They were buried at Denton in the Chapel burial ground. A memorial stone marks their grave.

Most of the births were unusually seasonal, possibly all, as not all of the dates are known, and note that they are all male.
William was born at Denton, James, Robert, John and George were born at Topcroft and Alfred and Charles at
Ditchingham. At the time of the 1851 Census they were living at Heath near Loddon and were actually listed under the name
FAREHEAD.

when a single man took up work as a Groom at Mettingham where he lived in lodgings. He married
Emma Chapman (1616) (b 1829 Pulham Market) at The Chapel, Pulham Market on the 22 nd October 1851. Emma was the daughter
of Joseph Chapman described as a Drillman.
They made their home at Wortwell by Harleston where William was employed as a Groom/Gardener and they had the

Alburgh. He married Ellen Harrison (1641) (b abt 1837 Topcroft) on the 14th October 1860 at Alburgh, Norfolk, and they had the

Possibly another sister.
At the time of the 1851 Census Elizabeth (Moats) (then aged 9) was living in Topcroft, with her Grandmother, and two
other grand daughters named Lannum. Her grandmother is recorded as a Pauper (aged 79) and Elizabeth as a ‘Servant at Farm
House’, Times obviously being very hard!!. Jonathan died in 1922 in Denton, and Elizabeth died on the 3 rd July 1932 (inquest held
on the 4th July) and is buried in Denton Chapel. The 1881 census shows the last four children living at home.

Mark 1843
was employed as a Journeyman Shoemaker, a trade connected with that of his father John 1815. He
married Mary Ann Alice Fryer (or Friar) (1651) (b 1843 Gt. Yarmouth, dau of Robert Fryer (4957) & Harriet (nee Roberts)) on the 8th
November 1865, at St. Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, and they had the following family :(1605)

well known in the District as Dan Fairhead the farmer, his correct name rarely used. He married Lucy Manning (3405) (b abt 1856
Bungay, Suffolk) in 1882 at Bungay. Dan died in 1937 at Kirby Cane, Norfolk. Lucy died on the 28 th March 1952 also at Kirby
Cane, Norfolk.

was born at Denton and went with his parents first to Topcroft and then to Ditchingham. He married
Mary Ann ? (1658) (b abt 1840 Ditchingham) and settled at Stockton where they are both buried. There is no record of any children.
William died in 1905, and Mary Ann at some time after 1901.

On the night of the 1871 Census Susannah was recorded as living at Ordinance Rd, Gt. Yarmouth. No husband, who was
probably out fishing. Benjamin died in 1882 at Gt. Yarmouth.

married Emma Riches (1709) (b 1860 Tasburgh, Norfolk) at The Chapel, Topcroft on the 3 rd October 1885.
His age was given as 22 years while Emma was 25. Samuel was a Groom/Gardener employed at Town Close Lodge, Newmarket
Road, Norwich, while Emma was a Domestic Servant, the daughter of Frederick Riches (6698) (deceased). Samuel's father James
(1589) had also died by this time.
Gardening was life to this great Fairhead, a specialist in the horticultural world and a lover of Nature. Albert knew him
personally as a very old man and he was told that early in life he was expected to follow his grandfather and become Clerk to the
Parish of Bedingham, but the love and duty in his role as Gardener in Norwich took him away from this country village. It would
have probably been unique had this fourth grandson followed the other three in this post.
However, Samuel continued to work at Town Close Lodge where the following family was born :Ethel Emma (1710)

Samuel outlived Emma, who died on the 22nd February 1936, and upon his retirement went to live at Costessey at the home
of his daughter Laura Ellen.
During this period he married again (4161), and spent the last ten or so years attending to an acquired Garden of no less than
an acre, almost every scrap of it cultivated and weed less to the day of his death at the age of 96 years, on the 22 nd February 1958
in the Norwich Outer District, Norfolk.
A truly remarkable man.

married his cousin Emma 1867 (1648) in 1892, in the Loddon & Clavering District, Norfolk,
she was the daughter of Jonathan 1842 (1602) & Elizabeth (Moates) (1647). They had a family of 2 sons & 3 daughters. These children
are listed under Emma's heading on a later page. Charles died on the 3 rd March 1947 at the age of 79 and is buried in Denton
Churchyard.

Mary Ann Elizabeth 1862 (1634)
the eldest child of Jacob (1593) & Susannah (1633), lost her life in an accident involving a
horse on the 23rd May 1885 at Bedingham. In the days before the motorcar, accident by horse was common. She was buried at
Bedingham Churchyard and her grave is next to her parents and is marked by a memorial stone.
George Edward 1864
(1635) married Emma Sutton (1722) (b.1865 Topcroft), a farmer’s daughter from Fressingfield., in
1890, in the Blything District, Suffolk. George spent his entire life devoted to farming. In his earlier days he farmed at Chepenhall
Green, Fressingfield, where a number of his children were born, but they were brought back to Bedingham for their christenings.
Later he farmed at Trinity Farm, Bungay and also at Pond Farm, Carlton St. Peter and at Fairstead Lane Farm, Hempnall. George
& Emma had the following family :-

He was a strict man in the home, but just, and their only household help shared the table with this large family. The
business traded under the name of G.E.Fairhead & Sons, but Arthur, the eldest, explained to Albert that it was 100% George
Edward. He, Arthur, did not see eye-to-eye with his father and broke away from the firm to start farming on his own account.
A rather interesting story told to Albert was, while journeying from Norwich Market he, George Edward, was held up on
Shottisham Common by some young men with the intention of robbing him, chains were used to hold up the horses, but knowing
the character of George Edward they probably never accomplished what they intended to do.
He finally retired to end his days at Stone Cottage, Hempnall where he died in his sleep aged 75 years, on the 8 th January
1940. The cause of death was thought to have been a Ferret Bite. He was a typical Fairhead, and Albert was told by an
'uninterested' person that he farmed well under less fashionable methods of that day with fine horses very well cared for. Emma
died not long after in 1942.
Frederick William 1866
married Eliza Beckett (1730) (b 1868 Bedingham) on the 21st November 1888 in the
Loddon & Clavering District, Norfolk. At some point after their marriage they moved to 61 Francis Road, Cotterridge. He was

all that is known about Frederick is a story of how he and his brother Frank set out on a trip
to London. By the time they got to Newmarket they had, had an argument as to whether to carry on or not and as a consequence
the story is that one went on and one turned back. In the 1891 Census he is listed as ‘unmarried and living with parents at
Alburgh. Frederick died in 1929 in the Blofield District, Norfolk.

the village Blacksmith in Wattisham, Suffolk that Ernest was unfortunately killed, at the age of 35 on the 16 th August 1901. After

who was better known as 'Ted', married Mary Louisa Pinner (1775) on the 27th July 1921 at
Mundham. It appears that he took over the cottage in Bakers Lane, Ditchingham the home of his parents and other members of his
family who shared it with him. It is probable that his father, Alfred (1615), better known a 'Shummy', was born in this same cottage
that was originally owned by his grandfather Daniel (1584), known locally as 'Old Dan Fairhead'. (A good family for nick names).
Albert (1670), then lived for a time at Costessey by Norwich and finally moved to Earsham by Bungay. Albert died in 1968, in the
Norwich Outer District, Norfolk.

Frederick George 1889
was a Bombardier in the “A” Bty. 62nd Bde., Royal Field Artillery (Ser. No. 85539),
and is mentioned in the Roll of Honor as have given his life in the 1914-18 War. He was killed on the 8 th June 1917 in the Pas-deCalais Sector, France. His last address is stated as 10, Waldeck Rd. Norwich, Norfolk.

Arthur George 1891 (1723)
broke away from his Father's business of G.E.Fairhead & Sons to farm on his own account.
He told Albert that his father held the 'reins' and controlled the business and he was in it in name only and dissatisfaction caused
him to branch out on his own.
He farmed at Wood Dalling and also at the Fairhead home of Bedingham where he made Stag Farm his home. Albert states
that from personal experience he found him to be a true Fairhead in build and character. Arthur also pointed out to Albert that a
real Fairhead was inevitably short in the thigh.
He married Alice Sparrow (1839) at Hempnall on the 8th February 1928. Alice was a widow aged 40 with 2 children and
Arthur at the time was 35 years of age ??. It is thought that they had some children of their own as well. It appears that Arthur
outlived his wife as when Albert knew him he was an arthritic old gentleman living on his own at Hempnall. He was always
attracted to his mother’s home of Spexwell and preferred that to Hempnall and it was during one of these visits that he was taken
ill and died in 1971, but he was brought home to Hempnall to be buried. The only information on their family is :F. (502)

Faith’s District Norwich) on the 17th August 1932 in the Loddon & Clavering District, Norfolk, who was a local girl he met when
his family lived at Pond Farm, Carlton St. Peter. Frederick William, like his older brother Arthur George inherited the desire to
farm on his own account, but had some difficulty in finding a suitable farm. He finally settled in a smallholding at Hardwick
where he stayed for the rest of his life. Their only family was :-

commonly known as 'Charlie' the youngest of George Edward (1635) & Emma's (1722) sons,
lived with his parents at Fairstead Farm, Hempnall where he met and married Hilda Sutton (1848) (b 1900 Blything, Suffolk) in
1922, in the Wangford District, Suffolk, a cousin related to Emma Sutton (1722) his mother. They had a daughter, who died a week
after birth, and also a son who died at 3 years of age. A third child survived and was living with her father at the time that Albert
wrote his book. However, Hilda (1848) the wife died in 1926 (possibly due to the birth of Alfred James). Charlie married her sister
Ida May Sutton (1852) (b 15/7/1902) in 1930, in the Blything District, Suffolk, but there were no children by this marriage. The

When Albert met the Fairhead’s at Uggershall, Cyril had passed away, and his brother Bertie was in occupation, with the
working of the farm taken over by Bertie's very able son Will.

remained single and lived in the family home in Hempnall for all of his
life, where he worked as a carpenter on local estates. Apart from 4 years which were spent in the 1914-18 War, for which he was
decorated with the Military Medal. He died in 1973 in the Norwich District, Norfolk.
Lily Brittania 1892 (1744)
also remained single and went to London in search of work. She worked as Head Housekeeper
to Dr. Fisher, Archbishop of Canterbury for part of her working life. On retiring she returned to Norfolk to live with her brother
Frederick. She died in 1965 in the Depwade District. They are both at rest in Hempnall Churchyard.
Gertrude May 1894 (1745)
on returning to Hempnall from Wattisham, after her father’s death, was taken under the wing
of her grandfather Samuel Read (1179) and educated at Bungay. On leaving school she entered the nursing profession. When she
qualified she went to work in Spilsby, later becoming District Welfare Officer of Lindsay Borough Council, Lincs. She lived there
until she died on the 27th March 1989.
Edith Ellen 1896 (1746)
lived with her mother and went to the village school in Hempnall. On leaving school she went to
train as a schoolteacher, starting her career at Loddon. She married Martin Smith (1871) in 1930, in the Freebridge Lynn District,
Norfolk, and went to live in Kings Lynn, and taught at the village school at Castle Rising. Moving later to Terrington St.
Clemments in 1952. She passed away on the 24th October 1982 at South Wootton. There were no children from this marriage.

on returning to Hempnall at the age of ten months was sent to live with an aunt & uncle at
Beeston and Crostwick. He was returned to his mother at the age of seven. Later he took over Manor Farm, Tasburgh. He married
Cissie May Edge (1872) (b abt 1903) on the 19th November 1931 in the Depwade District, Suffolk, and there were three children

During W.W.II she evacuated to Betchworth in Surrey where she worked in a large house owned by a Russian widow.
While there she met a Canadian Soldier called Manson Weaver (2016) . They were married on the 1st February 1941. They went to
Canada in January 1945, firstly to the town of Coboconk and then to Cresswell. Manson died on the 7 th June 1950.
Later she met Edgar Broad (2017) and they were married on the 9th April 1960 and moved to an apartment in Toronto where
they lived for 30 years. Edgar died on the 22nd June 1990.
Edward Joseph 1910 (1878) was born at Campsea Ashe in Suffolk, when he left school the family were living at
Framlingham and he was apprenticed to the local Bakers. When he finished his apprenticeship he moved to North Wales where he
was a Milkman for a time. He married Louise Daw (8890) in 1940, in the Tenterden District, Kent. Later in the 50's he had moved to
North London and had taken up the trade of a Plumber. He married Winifred Webster (2018) in 1956, in the Hendon District,
London, and they had a Bungalow built in Mill Hill, London. Ted died there on the 17 th December 1988 and Win died on the 13 th
November 1994. There was no family.
Rueben George Wilson 1914 (1879)
was also born at Campsea Ashe. After leaving school, in Framlingham, Suffolk,
he was apprenticed to a Mr. Scroggin's as an Upholsterer and Cabinet Maker. In about 1935 he moved to Basingstoke, Hampshire
to find work and worked for Lanham's a large furniture store. He married Joyce L. Nurse (6323) in 1940, in the Blyth District,
Suffolk. They were subsequently divorced.
He married Phyllis Elsie Notley (2019) (b.10.6.1922 Sherbourne, Dorset) on the 18 th August 1949, at St Michael’s Church,

Walter lied about his age to join the Army. He served in South Africa during the Boer War, and reached the rank of Sergeant
Major in WWI. He met Elizabeth when he was stationed at an Army training camp near Hawick in Scotland.
After marrying at Rushmere St. Andrew they stayed in Ipswich, Suffolk for a few years, and then around 1915 they moved to
Hawick, before finally settling in Edinburgh. Walter died on the 3rd March 1966 in Edinburgh, Scotland.
