Both choreographers, Jonathan Riedel of Riedel Dance Theater, and Ariel Grossman of Ariel Rivka Dance, are true storytellers who draw upon the emotional power of drama, movement and music to bring stories to life through dance. Both pieces feature live, on-stage musical performances of original scores/arrangements by two of today’s top contemporary composer/performers. Ariel Rivka Dance premieres Grossman’s Vashti – an homage to Vashti, the Queen of Shushan, (wife of King Ahasuerus, the ruler of Persia, in the Biblical story of Purim) who is known to many as a heroine. For many and for Grossman (a student of Women’s Studies at Skidmore College), Vashti represents the first instance of feminism. With modern choreography that springs from a strong balletic core, this work involves five dancers, an original score by composer David Homan, and live music featuring violin, cello, guitar and piano. These two emerging contemporary ensembles will share the stage for three consecutive nights March 7 – 9, 2013, at the Ailey Citigroup Theatre (NYC). Both choreographers, Jonathan Riedel and Ariel Grossman, are true storytellers who draw upon the emotional power of drama, movement and music to bring stories to life through dance. Both pieces feature live, on-stage musical performances of original scores/arrangements by two of today’s top contemporary composer/ performers. In honor of the 100th anniversary of the premiere of Diagheliv’s Rite of Spring, the always compelling Riedel Dance Theater presents In Violent Circles (The Rite of Spring) - a dark and ominous re-imagining of this celebrated work. Inspired by a 13th Century Swedish folk ballad "Töres dotter i Wänge" and two 20th century film adaptations by first Igmar Bergman and then Wes Craven, In Violent Circles (The Rite of Spring) is set for seven dancers in two acts (Act 1 - The Rituals of that Morning; Act 2 - The Rituals of that Night) and live, on-stage piano accompaniment by Neil Alexander. Choreographer Jonathan Riedel adheres to the traditional themes of the work - loss of innocence, natural order, and tumultuous rebirth - while depicting the story of a family ripped apart by a violent act and the desperate means by which they find peace. It's a timeless tale told through Riedel's seamless blend of contemporary dance and theatrical storytelling and serves as his most complex and stripped down piece to date. “To make a Rite of Spring that is truly unique, personal to me, and still worthy of Stravinsky's infamous score I decided to find a story to tell with it that captured the themes of the music and original ballet but, www.haulehaulemagazine.com 9 that was intricate enough with its plot and characters to captivate a contemporary audience,” explains Riedel. “The violence of the subject has not been spared from the work and, I hope, neither has the humanity.” Ariel Rivka Dance premieres Grossman’s Vashti – an homage to Vashti, the Queen of Shushan, (wife of King Ahasuerus, the ruler of Persia, in the Biblical story of Purim) who is known to many as a heroine. Vashti is seen as a brave and strong character who chooses to value her dignity above submitting to her husband's whims and offensive orders. About Riedel Dance Theater Established in 2003 by choreographer and Artistic Director, Jonathan Riedel, Riedel Dance Theater is a storyteller through dance. The company is guided by this purpose in its performances, teaching, and outreach activities. It explores both timeless and innovative approaches to theater drawing upon the emotional power of drama, movement and music to bring stories to life. The result: dance that is visually striking, innately musical, emotionally resonant, and infectiously expressive. Riedel prospered in a career with the Limon Dance Company from 1996 to 2006, touring globally and being heralded by critics. He was labeled "the Limon Company's reigning male star" by the San Francisco Examiner and ArtsJournal declared him to be "surely one of the most fascinating dancers the company has harbored." And in 2002, he staged his breakaway hit, The Unsightful Nanny on the Limon Dance Company. Riedel has received the Choo San Goh Award in support of his work as well as funding from The Greenwall Foundation, The Frances Alexander Foundation, and The New York State Council on the Arts and a Harkness Space Grant. http://www.riedeldancetheater.org Ariel Grossman (alumnus of Joffrey Ballet School and Skidmore College) in 2007, ARD is a Contemporary Ballet/Modern Dance company based in New York City committed to creating work that explores raw emotion in the context of strong technique and form. In addition to prioritizing collaboration with living composers, the overarching goal of ARD is to use movement to expose, intrigue, and inspire the audience and collaborators. Comprised of dynamic and graceful dancers, ARD also strives to create a comfortable and inviting environment for the audience so they can deepen and/or develop their passion for dance. To do this, it offers free community performances and early childhood programming. Most recently, ARD was presented at the Greenspace Blooms Festival and Saratoga Arts Fest. http://www. arielrivkadance.com MEDIA CONTACT: April Thibeault, AMT PR, 212.861.0990, [email protected] About Ariel Rivka Dance (ARD) Founded by Artistic Director and Choreographer HHMI INSPIRATIONAL VIDEOS 10 HAULE HAULE MAGAZINE THE GREATEST SPEECH EVER MADE http://www.youtube.com watch?v=6FMNFvKEy4c The Greatest Speech Ever Made – Abstract Version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RYlAPjyNm8 NORTH CAROLINA WILD HORSES http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=0UR7weE_NCM Wild Horses of the Outer Banks http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=rlLK7gKl9T4 FEATURE ARTICLE THE CELEBRATION OF A NEW YEAR FROM AROUND THE WORLD Happy New Year!! Well folks for those of us who are here in “this now moment”, we’ve made it through! Let me check….10 fingers, ten toes, two eyes, all my teeth, yep……..!!! I’m feeling great and ready to go into a “whole new year”! December 21, 2012 (Mayan Prophecies) have come and gone. We The People are forging ahead continuing to discover new thing, new dreams and aspirations, new levels of conscious thought, the beginning of a new understanding and compassion for their fellow man- Hu-man being. This is a New Year, a year filled with new adventures and experiences . “WE HAVE ARRIVED” . A new year means a new start, a….., what would you say, “a new beginning”. This year is your year and believe that in your “heart of all hearts”, located deep down inside where no one has been, but you!! It is believed that the New Year celebration, which is officially recognized on January 1st each year, started on the European continent. This “highly celebrated occasion”, is recognized worldwide and is accompanied by beautiful displays of fireworks and “Pomp and Circumstance”. From lavish New Year parties to quaint home “get together”, people always bring the year in “their way”. Here is some background information on this “high celebration”. The earliest recording of a New Year celebration is believed to have started in the Mesopotamia area around c.2000B.C. January 1st was celebrated around the “vernal equinox in mid “March”. Rome-153 B.C. celebrated January 1st as a holiday. Middle Ages – January 1st was said to have been abolished in medieval Europe because “the powers than be” felt that the New Year celebration was pagan and unchristian like. The New Year song “ AULD LANG SYNE”. Auld Lang Syne is believed to be an old “Scottish” song that was first published by poet, Robert Burns around 1796 in a book called Scots Musical Museum. Each year …after year….after year…. after year… people attempt to sing this song that apparently nobody knows the words to. Auld Lang Syne translates to “old long since” which means “times gone by”. In our American history bandleader Guy Lombardo and Robert Burns were the two people who made the song famous and turned it into a New Year’s tradition. When Lombardo first heard “Auld Lang Syne” in his hometown of London, Ontario, it was being sung by a group of Scottish immigrants, It was literally music to his ears.. Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians, a dance band that was formed by Guy and his brother, performed the song each year at various events over the years and the song became one of their standards. Lombardo played the song at midnight at a New Year’s eve party at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City in 1929, and a tradition was born. After that, Lombardo’s version of the song was played every New Year’s eve from the 1930s until 1976 at the Waldorf Astoria. In the first years it was broadcast on radio, and then on television. The song became such a New Year’s tradition that Life Magazine wrote that if Lombardo failed to play ‘Auld Lang Syne,’ the American public would not believe that the new year had really arrived.” This New Year, we will break the “standard tradition” of not knowing the words to this song. Here are the lyrics listed below for your convenience. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acxnmaVTlZA AULD LANG SYNE LYRICS Should auld acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind? www.haulehaulemagazine.com 11 Should auld acquaintance be forgot and days of Auld Lang Syne? Decorations and champagne are also a part of the traditional celebration. The evil spirits of the old year are chased away by the firing of moroars, called boller (today we use fireworks). During a midnight mass trumpets are blown from church towers at midnight, when people kiss each other. 12 HAULE HAULE MAGAZINE Belgium: In Belgium, New Year Eve is called Sint Sylvester Vooranvond, or Saint Sylvester Eve. Jill Gurr. Let’s see, she has a B.S. Degree in Broadcasting and Film from Boston University, a former disc jockey, studied at the City of London Polytechnic. Gurr being fluent in Spanish, French and Italian, has spent two decades traveling and living around the world to include Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. An accomplished screenwriter, Jill has worked with top celebrities on award-winning films and productions. That was then… but now her journey is just beginning… Jill Gurr, is the Founder and Executive Director of the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization called CreateNow. CreateNow, which was founded by Jill in 1996, is an organization that transforms the lives of youth in need located in both the Los Angeles and (previously) Orlando, Florida areas. 14 HAULE HAULE MAGAZINE JG has matched hundreds of mentors with thousands of children who need guidance and support. Gurr, whose professional background revolves around the “Writers’ Industry in Hollywood” has authored a book called “Mentor Youth Now: A Guidebook for Transforming Young Lives,” which is an all-embracing book that is all about “How To Mentor Children.” The amount of energy that Jill releases for her organization is absolutely mind-blowing. We will be featuring CreateNow throughout the 2013 calendar year and beyond. We finally caught up with Jill for a lengthy interview session and here is how it went. INTERVIEW QUESTIONS: HHMIQ: It takes a lot of “strength of character”, tenacity, energy and determination to take on the challenges of working with at risk and high risk youth. Where do you get your inspiration? Where do you find the courage? A: Thanks for recognizing the hard work that it takes to do this. I think that my strength, energy and determination come from my parents, especially my father who was a workaholic with non-stop energy. After he retired, my dad loved to volunteer at the hospital and was always helping out neighbors. My mother was a tremendous influence on me, as well. We were very close. Both of my parents always encouraged me to follow my dreams. I also feel guided by higher powers. I have always felt compelled to help these troubled kids, even giving up my lucrative and glamorous career in the film industry and struggling financially to make it happen. I sense that this source of inspiration is coming from the spirit world. Courage comes from just not being willing or able to give up. I’ve had some close calls with almost losing CreateNow, especially during the recession, but by standing strong, being dedicated and willing to sacrifice, the organization is now stronger than ever. HHMIQ: What are some of the trademarks of being a good mentor? A: The most important trademarks for a good mentor are to be consistent, dependable and able to listen. All of our youth need positive role models, especially with the negative influences in the world. Many at-risk youth have been let down by their parents and other adults. Mentors can help to guide them and become a special friend. It’s essential that mentors maintain their commitment. If you say that you’ll be there every week at a certain time, then you need to be there. Your mentees (youth who are mentored are called mentees) will be looking forward to it and they will be very disappointed if you flake out. It will probably take them time to build trust in you, so the first step is to be reliable. Kids may not listen to their parents or teachers, but they usually respect other adults such as mentors, espe- cially when they’re volunteering their time and not getting paid. Mentors allow them to vent their frustrations and to receive sound advice. However, don’t be judgmental and don’t force your beliefs. Be a good listener and paraphrase (repeat back in your own words) what they’ve shared with you so your mentees know that you understood them. HHMIQ: What inspired you to found “CreateNow”? A: I worked as a Script Supervisor (continuity) for 20 years on feature films all over the world with famous actors and directors. Two movies in particular strongly impacted me. “Menace II Society” opened my eyes to the reality of life on the streets of South Central Los Angeles, which is just a few miles from my home in Hollywood. There was so much poverty, violence and racism. I also worked on a film called “My Family,” which we shot in East Los Angeles. There was an eightyear-old boy and his eleven-year-old brother hanging out with the film crew at two in the morning on a weeknight. I asked them where their parents were and the youngest said “I don’t know where my mother is, and my father, he don’t give a f%&$.” This shocked me and I did some research. I discovered that Los Angeles has the highest poverty rate in the nation and the largest number of homeless children, foster kids and incarcerated youth. We’re also the “Gang Capital of the World,” with an estimated 93,000 gang members. I had an idea for a screenplay about two rival gang members ending up at the same detention camp. After a year of many trials and tribulations, I was finally able to teach a Screenwrit- ing Workshop to around 30 teenage boys who were locked up for all kinds of crimes, from petty theft and rape to grand theft and assault. At the end of my class, a number of these boys learned how to read and write through my technique. Others wanted to go back to school and attend college. One tough gang leader who had initially boycotted my workshop ended up having gang tattoos removed from his neck and hand. Based on this success, I was able to set up another Screenwriting Workshop at a co-ed detention facility and I got the same results. I met another writer and shared my story. She called to tell me that her professor Leslie Stevens, a producer who taught at the American Film Institute, wanted to give me $5,000 to start a nonprofit organization. I didn’t know anything about nonprofits, but I realized that this was a terrific opportunity to make a difference. I wanted to create a way for volunteers to give back to the neediest kids right in their own neighborhoods. Writing has always been my escape, and I knew there were kids who were talented as artists, musicians, dancers, etc., but they never had the opportunity to explore the arts, which are incredibly therapeutic. Research shows that the arts stimulate the brain and arts education has an incredible affect on learning and cognitive skills. Plus, Los Angeles is the “Arts Center of the World,” generating hundreds of thousands of jobs and billions of dol- www.haulehaulemagazine.com 15 lars in sales revenue. Mentoring is really the key, though, regardless of the arts component. It’s the relationship that a mentor develops with the youth that is the magic ingredient to inspire and encourage them to do better. CreateNow has a network with hundreds of emergency shelters, group homes, detention centers and other youth agencies, so we can match mentors right in their own neighborhoods and give them the training and materials needed to teach their creative expressions. I dove into this by putting my film career on the backburner and working nonstop to build the organization for the past 16 years. HHMIQ: What has been your greatest challenge(s) with the program? A: For 15 years, I was running all the arts mentoring programs, while also doing the fundraising, marketing, building the Board of Directors and a million other things. For most of that time (13 years), I wasn’t getting a salary, so I worked on commercial productions as a Script Supervisor to support myself. It was very hard making ends meet, such as paying my rent and other bills, but I’ve managed to scrape by. It’s been worth it and I wouldn’t change a thing (although I have to admit there have been times that I’ve questioned my choices). HHMIQ: What do you feel has been some of your greatest accomplishments with the youth and young adults? A: There are so many stories and wonderful experiences, not just from the kids being mentored but also our volunteers. Some of our mentors have changed their careers after being inspired by their experiences. The children we serve are usually never exposed to the arts. They’re shuffled around from shelter to foster group home to detention boot camp and the streets. While we may have limited time with them, they benefit tremendously from CreateNow. For instance, each year we bring around 2,500 youth to concerts, plays and special events like Cirque du Soleil. These experiences can have a profound impact. They discover famous venues like the Hollywood Bowl, Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Geffen Playhouse where they can aspire to attend more performances. They learn social etiquette, which for many of these kids is something they really need to know in order to assimilate into society. 16 HAULE HAULE MAGAZINE While we have many success stories to share, my favorite is Tasha Caulfield. She ran away from a dysfunctional home in a poor neighborhood from ages 13-16. She took a TV Writing Workshop with one of our mentors. Tasha bonded with her mentor, who continued to meet with her every week, encouraging her to apply to college. With her mentor’s help (along with mine and two other mentors who I introduced her to), Tasha graduated from USC Film School and attended her first year of law school at the University of Illinois in Chicago. She’s currently traveling around the U.S. performing standup comedy and writing film reviews for a Chicago newspaper. Tasha said that CreateNow helped her get through the darkest time of her life. There are a million more Tashas out there who need our help! Our arts mentoring programs are amazing since our mentors are professionals or talented in their fields. They bring knowledge, passion and experience to their workshops. We help them to develop their curricula and provide them with training, ideas, arts supplies, equipment and support. Funding is a continual problem, especially in a world that doesn’t value the arts as much as they should. Unfortunately the arts are the first thing to be cut in a tough economy, so CreateNow depends on individual donations to keep our programs going. Even $1.00 can buy paint supplies and books for vulnerable children. built vocational guidance into our programs so they can learn how to put a portfolio or resume together, go on a job interview and fit in the workplace. All of our programs culminate with a party for the kids that includes refreshments with gift bags that contain art supplies, CDs, Certificates of Completion and other souvenirs. These serve as lasting reminders of their experiences. They develop confidence and self-esteem, while learning skills that can lead to jobs and careers. We’ve HHMIQ: How many books have you authored? A: I’m primarily a screenwriter – I’ve written 18 original film and TV scripts and another 10 as a writer-for-hire. Two of those scripts were produced: “Rigged” was adapted from a James Hadley Chase book and stars George Kennedy. I wrote the pilot for a PBS series called “The Immortals.” The episode was “Socrates” and it stars Ed Asner. A number of my original scripts have been optioned by reputable producers. I’m still promoting them, since screenwriting is my other passion. I’ve written three books: (1) “Dreamer” is a children’s novel based on my script of that name about a 10-year-old girl fighting cancer who is inspired to live through a dolphin; (2) “No Limits” is an autobiographical book I was hired to write for Joky Van Dieten, an amazing woman from Holland who had a phenomenal, adventurous life and who owned a number of ancient, mystical crystal skulls; (3) “Mentor Youth Now: A Guidebook for Transforming Young Lives” is my most recent book and something that I’m very proud of – three years in the making! It’s packed with information about mentoring youth based on my 20 years of experience, from the basics to setting boundaries, teaching life skills and how to end a mentoring relationship. There are loads of resources that I compiled, including a 30-page cited report on the State of America’s youth, plus inspirational stories about mentors from all over the United States. HHMIQ: Do you feel that your writing skills and the many other talents that you have has helped you to “mentally and emotionally” reach that “untouchable” space that some of the students in your program may have or may have had? Please elaborate. A: I think that being empathetic and open-minded has been very valuable for me to reach youth, and these are skills that I’ve developed as a writer. I’ve written some pretty horrible characters, which a writer must do to create good stories. You have to get under their skin and understand their motives for doing some gruesome things. So if you’re listening to a youth who has done something terrible, it’s easier to understand that they’ve had to endure difficulties, which is what motivates them. I believe that all of the arts bring up our buried emotions and help us to analyze our feelings, which for the kids that CreateNow serves is crucial. For example, I met a young man named “Rafael,” age 15, who was incarcerated for raping his sister. It turns out that he had been sexually abused throughout his childhood. I learned that it’s common for victims of sexual abuse to inflict it on others. I found this boy a wonderful mentor, Quinton Peeples, who was a writer and director. Rafael’s mentor worked with him each week to help the youth share his story. My friend Wanda Patterson was an art instructor at this detention facility and she took a group of the youth to an art exhibition at a museum. Rafael saw a sculpture made by an artist who was a sex offender and something in the artwork spoke deeply to him. He started to awaken, and with the help of Quinton and others at the facility, the boy reformed. Quinton got him an internship with a production company and the last that I heard, Rafael was working as a journalist in San Francisco. HHMIQ: How long did it take you to develop and “birth” CreateNow, which by the way is an awesome name? How did you select that name? A: When I got the $5,000 grant from Leslie Stevens, I used the money to become a 501 (c)(3) and to establish the organization, which was initially named Write Now (with the play-onwords “Right Now”). I founded the organization in 1996 with the mission to teach literacy through different forms of creative writing. Soon afterwards, it became apparent that many of these kids couldn’t read and write, and they had no interest in the literary arts. Many youth preferred other forms of creativity, such as music, dance and art. In 1998, I changed the name of the organization to CreateNow to maintain the continuity of what I had started with our branding, and we have been helping thousands of troubled youth ever since (over 30,000). HHMIQ: Explain to us, here at HHMI how you feel inside when you have “broken through” to one of your students? A: There’s an amazing feeling of success when you see the “light bulb” go off in students’ minds. The best example is my first Screenwriting Workshop at the detention facility. I developed a technique using improvisation to have the story written in the exact words that the kids used. After all, it was meant to be their story and characters. However, this tough Latino gang leader had boycotted my class because I wanted a happy ending. During the dinner break of our first workshop, he had convinced most of the other Latino youth that my class was not worth attending (he used much stronger language), so only a few brave kids from that group came back, with mostly African-American youth participating. After a few weeks, I was able to convince the gang leader that the screenplay would have a tragic finale, just the way they wanted it, with both gang leaders getting killed. They all came back and we had a full class. This gang leader was the youth who later had tattoos removed. I was able www.haulehaulemagazine.com 17 to give the story some hope at the end by showing that while their younger teenage brothers wanted revenge for the gang leaders’ deaths, their sixyear-old brothers played together. When we did the final read-through of the script, I had these tough teenage thugs crying and trying to hide their tears. They were deeply moved by the way the story unfolded, and especially hearing their own words spoken by their peers during the reading. Some of the boys learned how to read and write through my workshop. Others wanted to go back to school and to apply to college. I knew that my workshop had made an impact on their lives and it was the greatest feeling in the world. Whenever I visit one of our programs, my heart is lifted as I watch the kids engaging in the arts. Some of them have amazing talents in music, dance, acting, and more. They’re motivated to stay in school and pursue a career in the arts, like 9-year-old Maritza who recently participated in our Create A Mural Now Workshop at a domestic violence shelter. She loved our class so much that she skipped dinner so that she could help the mentor clean the brushes. Maritza decided that she’s going to be an artist when she grows up, and she continues to explore visual arts with the paint kit that CreateNow gave her. Not only is doing this work gratifying to me, but it’s especially rewarding for our mentors. They know that they’re making a difference in these children’s lives. They experience first-hand those “ah-ha!” moments that the kids have when they discover their talents, and they learn about different cultures that can also affect their own artistic creations. 18 HAULE HAULE MAGAZINE HHMIQ: How long does a child who enters your program stay in your program? Is this a lifelong mentoring program? A: One of our challenges is that the kids we serve are in-and-out of shelters, foster group homes, detention facilities and rehab centers. We keep our programs relatively short to accommodate their schedules because we want them to feel that they’ve completed the workshop. It’s a huge accomplishment for these youth to finish something, which is why we celebrate it with a party, gift bags and the Certificates of Completion. However, I’ve found that some kids can change their lives even after just one meeting with a mentor. Frank Covarrubias is an example of that. His social worker called to say that he was a good kid but he was in detention for skipping school and doing drugs. He really wanted to play the saxophone, and she was able to get him one donated, but he needed a mentor. We were able to get internationally-acclaimed jazz saxophonist Michael Lington to give Frank a one-hour lesson at our office. Soon afterwards, Frank went to Compton Community College and joined their band, where he became the First Chair Saxophonist. He’s now working at Panasonic and he continues to play the saxophone. He was interviewed for a special holiday show on Univision TV and Frank said that the reason he changed his life was because no one, especially a man, had ever told him to be responsible and persistent. That one hour changed his life. It’s challenging for us to track the kids that we serve once they leave their institutions because their names are hidden for confidentiality reasons and there are too many to follow, but I know that some lifelong relationships have developed between our mentors and the youth. The first match that I ever made helped a girl whose mother was a crack addict. She was in the foster system from age 11 and had been in and out of detention for a number of years. The girl’s mentor helped her write a screenplay that got optioned by a producer. The mentor has become the Godmother of her children and an extended family member. Other mentors have told me that their mentees have attended college and gone on to get jobs. Now that CreateNow finally has a full-time staff to help me build the organization, we’re developing a better system to track the youth who participate in our programs. HHMIQ: What do you feel that the youth and young adults need today that they are not getting? A: Youth need more guidance and adult supervision, but not from a patronizing or condescending perspective. Most kids today are more tuned in than I was as a youth. They’re technologically advanced and often wiser beyond their years. They can sense when people are being fake or phony with them. We had a mentor who was initially uncomfortable teaching incarcerated teenage girls how to write their stories and poems. They immediately picked up on her anxiety. When she asked them how they knew she was nervous, they said that they could see her lip quivering and her hands trembling. These kids have street-sense and powerful instincts that help them to survive. Youth today need to feel like they are an important part of our world and their opinions are valued. Talk to them with respect. You have experiences to share and they usually want your support, even if they have to hide it to look “cool” to their peers (and you). If you speak honestly and be open about yourself, then they’ll also open up to you. It might take time for them to build trust, but as you continue to meet with them and show that you care, they will give you their love and friendship. Most importantly, let them know that their ideas are precious and their voices are being heard. 16. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ ddv_71f3dQ - Philippines 5. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_ LQBTt003Y – New Zealand 6. http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=d6lWArihfm0 – Sydney Australia 17. http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=RVrevFq-QNQ - Miami 18. http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=sIrPsciwL98 - Chicago Stay tuned for Part 2 and Part 3 of our wonderful journey in ”The World Of Jill Gurr.” You can find Jill Gurr’s future CreateNow adventures right before our own Lil Ms. Jamie Telford of Hobbies and Horse® in HHMI. 7. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeqFqL31zM - Hawaii 8. http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=hPHeh2s-4Dg - Las Vegas 9. http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=VCBwhoYXIyE = Paris, France 19. http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=oN3sjt9cnko – Raleigh, North Carolina NEW YEARS FIREWORKS FROM AROUND THE WORLD 1.http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=IkQnVTCQQOA – New York 2.http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=F8HJErljtFI - BRAZIL 3. http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=WdJf5IX0N9g - San Francisco 4. http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=4e8vfRTsFU4 - London 10. http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=2ghRlSDTET4 - China 11. http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=eDrlSxp6vqs - Mexico 12. http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=dCpOghrdU28 - Canada 13. http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=Bw4QvoeGvFQ - Toronto 14. http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=ZOU5C5rmMNg – Count Down Fireworks 2013 15. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8X7q7jOACs - Italy 20. http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=V6aEOLvQguU – San Antonio, Texas 21. http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=SoswQfO-22Y – Buffalo, New York – Ball Drop 22. http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=F4fbucWLsvA – New York City Ball Drop 23. http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=RPfEVzMJ24I – Denver Colorado www.haulehaulemagazine.com 19 • Anderson Cooper – “coming out of the closet” and reporting to the world that he is gay. • Prince Harry photographed in the nude in a Las Vegas hotel room. New Year Quotes By Famous People Albert Einstein - Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. Charles Lamb – New Years’ Day is every man’s birthday. Mark Twain – New Year’s Day now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions. Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual. Eric Zorn - Making resolutions is a cleansing ritual of self assessment and repentance that demands personal honesty and ultimately reinforces humility. Breaking them is part of the cycle. Oscar Wilde – Good resolutions are simply checks that men draw on, a bank where they have no account. Leonard Bernstein – From New Year’s on the outlook brightens; good humor lost in a mood of failure returns. I resolve to stop complaining. Vern McLellan – What the New Year brings to you will depend a great deal on what you bring to the New Year! Michael Altshuler – The bad news is that “time flies”. The good news is you’re the pilot. Henry Ward Beecher – Every tomorrow has two handles. We can take hold of it with the handle of anxiety or the handle of faith. Bill Vaughn – Youth is when you’re allowed to stay up late on New Year’s Eve. Middle age is when you’re forced to! Jay Leno – Now there are more overweight people in America than average weight people. So overweight people are now average, which means you have met your New Year’s Resolution. James Agate – New Year’s Resolution: To tolerate fools more gladly, provided this does not encourage them to take up more of my time. OPRAH WINFREY – Cheers to a New Year and another chance for us to get it right! Make It a BYOA Affair – Bring Your Own Appetizer Phone your invitees and inform them that it’s a BYOA event. There are a number of cheap and easy appetizers that your guests can bring, but if someone doesn’t know how to cook or what to bring, suggest raw veggies and hummus, a fruit and nut platter, or a cheese and crackers plate. If someone claims that even those are too difficult, ask them to bring a container or two of mixed nuts – you can provide the bowl! 2. Serve Champagne Sangria for Midnight Toasting This is an easy and delicious way to cut down on champagne costs that will be appreciated by all! To make champagne sangria, simply use these ingredients and follow the instructions below: Ingredients: One 32-ounce bottle of apple juice One 12-ounce can of frozen cranberry juice concentrate One cup of orange juice One-and-a-half liters of champagne (or ginger ale for a non-alcoholic version) Directions: Keep items chilled (or frozen) until use. Combine the apple juice, cranberry juice concentrate, and orange juice in a large bowl. Stir well. Add sliced oranges, kiwi slices, and any other fruit you like. Slowly add the champagne or ginger ale at the last minute to keep it bubbly. This recipe serves 12, but you might want to double up for thirsty guests! 3. Have a Midnight Supper After the midnight toast, close the bar and invite everyone to take part in a midnight 30 HAULE HAULE MAGAZINE supper. A baked potato bar is easy, fun, and inexpensive. Bake the biggest potatoes you can find, and follow with dessert! Put potatoes in the oven at 400 degrees at about 10:30pm. They should be done in about an hour. Set out as many toppings as you like: sour cream, bacon bits, chopped scallions, salsa, shredded cheese, jalapenos, chives, steamed broccoli, butter, mushrooms, chili, and anything else you’d like. Let everyone fix their own potato, as loaded as they want. For dessert, serve chocolate cake from a mix with white icing and colored sprinkles. Serve with ice cream and a little hot fudge sauce. Be sure to provide coffee with dessert for the drive home. This menu will cost about $2 per person, which is very reasonable for a hearty supper. If you want to spend more, make a cheesecake instead for a rich finish to your meal. 4. Remember That Timing Is Everything Since you want to keep the party hopping until (and perhaps well past) the midnight hour, consider starting around 10pm. But if you prefer to start much earlier, have the potato bar ready at around 10pm so guests don’t go hungry. If your group wants to spend five to six hours together, plan on having a full-scale potluck early in the evening. You can skip the appetizers in this case, but still prepare your midnight supper. Fun & Games 5. Ask Guests to Bring an Unusual Noisemaker Have a ”craziest noisemaker” contest and be sure to shoot video! Replay each person with their noisemaker for the crowd and vote on who wins. Provide a prize to the winner, such as earmuffs. Then, get everyone together for the big midnight countdown and create your own symphony of racket, clatter, and boom. 6. “Hire” a Photographer Ask one guest to serve as the “official” photographer to take before and after photos, or do it yourself. As guests arrive, invite them to pose with one person seated and the other standing next to a chair (like an old-time photo – no smiling allowed). You could provide old-fashioned hats, and maybe a shawl or scarf for props. Later, take “after midnight” photos of your guests in their holiday party outfits showing off their noisemakers. Post all the photos online to share. 7. Ask Guests to Write Predictions for the New Year Have your guests sign their predictions and place them into a bowl or a box. Then, during supper, take turns reading the predictions while everyone guesses who wrote them. It can be surprising how difficult it is to guess your friends’ predictions – and it’s a great way to wrap up the night! Decorations & Atmosphere 8. Hang Handmade Paper Snowflakes From the Ceiling White printer paper snowflakes in varying sizes, plain or accented with silver or clear glitter, can be hung from different lengths of thread or ribbon for a festive effect. You can even scatter some over a table for easy decor. If you glitter them, remember that less is more. 9. Hang Lengths of Curled Ribbon for an Iconic New Year’s Eve Curling ribbon is very easy, but it looks great everywhere. Try to find the wider variety, about a half-inch thick. You can hang it from light fixtures, doorways, lamps, mantels, even on the bathroom mirror. Scatter a few curls between dishes on your midnight buffet as well. 10. Use Metallic and Glittered Christmas Ornaments Glittery Christmas ornaments look wonderful in a bowl as a centerpiece. You can also hang plain ornament balls from a light fixture over a table using varying lengths of ribbon in your theme colors. They also look nice hung in front of a mirror. 11. Set Out All the Candles You Own Set out every candle you can find in your house, and consider buying a cheap bag of votives, which can be put into glasses, canning jars, or even apples. You can also find inexpensive votive holders at the dollar store. You can frost them by simply using glue and epsom salts. Mix regular white school glue with water (three parts glue mixed with one part water) and paint the mixture onto the sides of the votive holder. Then, roll it in a plate full of epsom salts from the grocery store. Once it dries, you’ll have a sparkling frosted votive holder! Place these wherever you want to add a little glamor; they look especially nice place atop a mirror or in front of one. Final Word Have a blast at your New Year’s party, but remember, no matter what, never allow anyone to drive home impaired! Not only do you want to keep your friends safe, but as a host, you could be legally liable for their drunk driving. These are known as “social host” laws, and many states have them. To protect everyone, have a sober person drive intoxicated friends home, call a cab, or take their keys and let them sleep at your place. A simple bacon, eggs, and coffee breakfast will be fine for these overnight guests. In addition to the front runners, Kelly Clarkson has 4 nominations, Taylor Swift has 3 nominations, Carly Rae Jepsen has 2 nominations, here is the full list of the nominees for that night: HHMI VIRTUAL VJ: Christy Another year has come and gone already? I have already started making out my Christmas list for next Christmas. Is time literally moving faster or is it just me? My goodness, where did the time go? The New Year parties were jumping around town, Barcelona Suites, located on 900 Louisiana Boulevard, Albuquerque had a “New Years throw down”, Sandia Casino (Exit Tramway on Interstate 25 - North) Albuquerque, New Mexico was packed to the max… you couldn’t even see the floor people were packed in so tight. While making my rounds on New Years’ night, reporting on where all of the hot parties where I managed to locate some heavy partying at quite a few spots around town on New Years’ night: The “FIGUEROA PROJECT”: New Year Eve In Vienna – 1701 Fourth Street SW – ABQ, Downtown (505) 246-2261 “The FIGUEROA MUSIC PROJECT” will present the music of Viennese masters. Casino Hollywood – Hagen Road, San Felipe – PUEBLO Blackbird Buvette – Central Ave. – New Years Eve extravaganza begins at 10:00pm I see that it is about that time again for the wildest award show on television today. I won’t even dampen the mood discussing last years’ tragedy. This year’s 55th Annual 2013 Grammy Award is going to be a fight to the music finish line. It is anyone’s guess who will win this year? As always, Jay-Z and KIMYE, excuse me, I mean Kayne is out in front as usual….you can check out the list yourself, here it is for your eyes only: THE GRAMMYS 2013 Album of the Year » The Black Keys - El Camino » Fun. - Some Nights » Mumford & Sons - Babel » Frank Ocean - Channel Orange » Jack White - Blunderbuss Record of the Year » The Black Keys - "Lonely Boy" » Kelly Clarkson - "Stronger" » Fun. feat. That’s one long list!! Moving right along, HHMI will be presenting a very talented young man by the name of Harold Whaley….this guy is “Awesome” with a capital “A”. Finally, music without commercials. And what I like most about tuning into listening to Harold is that, you know who you are listening too…because he lists the name of the artist, and the name of the song. Finally, someone who gives the people what they want, the name of the artist that they are listening to while they are hearing the music! www.haulehaulemagazine.com 37 THE JOCKEYS CORNER “AND THEY’RE OFF!!” Pictured above is Albuquerque Downs Race Track – Starter: James Telford in a crisp plaid shirt – HAPPY NEW YEAR , James. Chapter Seven comes out on top for 2012 season – The Four year old male beauty was crowned “Horse Of The Year”. Pictured above from left to right are Jockeys: Dennis M. Collins and John Rochabrun waiting to mount their horses. Jockeys typically range in height from about 4’10” to 5’6” All jockeys must have a riding license in the state where they are racing. Albuquerque Downs Valet: Terry L. Gard carries the jockeys’ saddle back to the “PADDOCK” area to get ready for the next race. Pictured above is Jockey John Rochabrun, waiting for the signal to mount his horse. Sample of House colors As you can see from the photograph, jockeys come in all shapes and sizes. Good Luck with your race fellas! Betty “PINK HAT” Rader (Horse Trainer) and Jockey Carl “The Truth” Williams talk before the race. That must have been some chat session…….because they won that race. Jockeys are not subject to height limits, just weight limits. When a jockey wins a race he is “weight” at the Clerk of Scales station The average jockey weighs from 108118 pounds. Jockeys are responsible for their own riding equipment. The standard riding equipment for a jockey consists of helmet, pants, boots, saddle, gloves, upper body protection vest, and crop. Pictured above: Jockey Carl “The Truth” Williams is seen in a protective body vest and helmet. Williams knows all to well the importance of “protective body gear”. Carl took a “spill” in a riding accident several years ago. When asked whether or not the protective gear was effective…he stated the “protective gear “saved my life several years ago. The jockeys’ top jackets are normally divided into two categories which are owner colors and house colors.
