“RECEIVE THE KING!”
PALM SUNDAY
March 29, 2015
Vicar Chris Holder, Vacancy Pastor
Reverend Kenneth Haupt, Guest Pastor
William Doehring, Organist
Bren Knutson, Choir Director
Every Member of Faith Lutheran Church

About Our Guest Pastor:
Pastor Kenneth Haupt will be sharing with us today. Pastor Haupt served as pastor
of Holy Cross Lutheran, Dallas, from 2005 until his retirement in 2011. Previous
pastorates were at Christ Memorial, East Brunswick, NJ; Our Saviour, NYC; and St.
Paul, Philadelphia, PA. Currently, Pastor Haupt does supply preaching as needed
and enjoys traveling with his wife, Linda.
As We Gather
As we are called to receive the King we are reminded that the crowd
has a different idea of the Kingdom than Jesus is offering. To receive
the King is to understand how swiftly Holy Week transitions from
the pageantry and triumph of Christ’s arrival into Jerusalem as king
to lamenting in his pending rejection and the suffering and death
of his passion.

For Children
We strongly encourage our younger guests and members to join
us as we learn and praise God together in worship. We invite
parents with younger children to sit near the front for better view.
We also have excellent children’s worship supplies in bags near the
entrance; larger bags are for older youth, while the smaller bags
are for younger children. And, as always, parents and guardians
may take any child age 0-5 to our nursery for loving care.
SONG OF PRAISE.....................................In the Name of the Lord
Quiet Please
So that we all might worship God in quiet and reverence, we invite
you to silence all cell phones and electronic devices.
MEMBERS & GUESTS!
Please sign the blue attendance books with the name of each family
member. By recording those who join us, we can improve the care
we offer to all our members and guests. Thank you!

Hosanna!
PALM SUNDAY READING
JOHN 12:12-13
The next day the great crowd that had come for the Feast
heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. They took palm
branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna! “
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is
the King of Israel!”

PROCESSIONAL
JOHN 12:14-19
Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is written,
“Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion; see, your king is
coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.” At first his disciples did
not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they
realize that these things had been written about him and that
they had done these things to him.
Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from
the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread
the word. Many people, because they had heard that he
had given this miraculous sign, went out to meet him. So the
Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere.
Look how the whole world has gone after him!”
hymn of invocation.... All Glory, Laud, and Honor Hymnal 442
Refrain
All glory, laud, and honor
To You, Redeemer, King
To whom the lips of children
Made sweet hosannas ring
You are the King of Israel
And David’s royal Son
Now in the Lord’s name coming
Our King and Blessed One
Refrain
The company of angels
Is praising You on high
And we with all creation
In chorus make reply
Refrain

The multitude of pilgrims
With palms before You went
Our praise and prayer and anthems
Before You we present
Refrain
To you before Your passion
They sang their hymns of praise
To You, now high exalted
Our melody we raise
Refrain
As You received their praises
Accept the prayers we bring
O Source of ev’ry blessing
Our good and gracious King

Teschner, 1584-1635. Setting: Lutheran Book of Worship: Select Hymns, 1985. Public domain.
Invocation
P In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit.
Matthew 28:19b (18-20)
C Amen.
Confession
P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and
confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in
the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.
Our help is in the name of the Lord,
C Who made heaven and earth.
P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,
C And You forgave the iniquity of my sin.
5
P Almighty God, our maker and redeemer, we poor sinners
confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean
and that we have sinned against You by thought, word, and
deed. Wherefore we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy,
seeking and imploring Your grace for the sake of our Lord
Jesus Christ.
C O most merciful God, who has given Your only-begotten
Son to die for us, have mercy upon us and for His sake
grant us remission of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit
increase in us true knowledge of You and of Your will and
true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your
grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus
Christ, our Lord. Amen.
P Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon
us and has given His only Son to die for us and for His
sake forgives us all our sins. To those who believe on His
name He gives power to become the children of God and
has promised them His Holy Spirit. He that believes and is
baptized shall be saved.
Mark 16:16; John 1:12
Grant this, Lord, unto us all.
C Amen.
P The Lord be with you.
C And with thy spirit.
P Let us pray.
Most merciful God as the people of Jerusalem, with palms
in their hands, gathered to greet your dearly beloved Son
when he came into his Holy City, grant that we may ever
hail him as our king and, when he comes again, may go
forth to meet Him with trusting and steadfast hearts and
follow him in the way that leads to eternal life; through the
same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reign with You
and the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever.
C Amen.

PSALM OF THE DAY
psalm 118:19-29
P Open for me the gates of righteousness; I will enter and
give thanks to the LORD.
C This is the gate of the LORD through which the righteous
may enter.
P I will give you thanks, for you answered me; you have
become my salvation.
C The stone the builders rejected has become the
capstone;
P the LORD has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes.
C This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be
glad in it.
P O LORD, save us; O LORD, grant us success.
C Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD. From
the house of the LORD we bless you.
P The LORD is God, and he has made his light shine upon us.
With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession up to the
horns of the altar.
C You are my God, and I will give you thanks; you are my
God, and I will exalt you.
P Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures
forever.

APOSTLES’ CREED
All: I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven and sits at the
right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence he will come to judge the living
and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body and the
life everlasting. Amen.
Sharing the Peace
P Peace be with you
C And also with you

hymn of the day...............Hosanna, Loud Hosanna Hymnal 443
Hosanna, loud hosanna
The little children sang
Through pillared court and temple
The lovely anthem rang
To Jesus, who had blessed them
Close folded to His breast
The children sang their praises
The simplest and the best
(continued)
8
From Olivet they followed
Mid an exultant crowd
The victor palm branch waving
And chanting clear and loud
The Lord of earth and heaven
Rode on in lowly state
Nor scorned that little children
Should on His bidding wait
“Hosanna in the highest”
That ancient song we sing
For Christ is our Redeemer
The Lord of heav’n our King
Oh, may we ever praise Him
With heart and life and voice
And in His blissful presence
Eternally rejoice
Text: Jeannette Threlfall, 1821-80. Tune: Gesangbuch der Herzogl. Hofkapelle,
Württemberg, 1784. Setting: The Lutheran Hymnal, 1941. Public domain.
READING
PHILIPPIANS 2:5-11
Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality
with God something to be grasped, but made himself
nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made
in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a
man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death
– even death on a cross!
Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and
gave him the name that is above every name, that at
the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and
on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

C Create in me a clean heart, O God
and renew a right spirit within me
Cast me not away from Thy presence
and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me
Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation

prayer OF THE CHURCH
lord’s prayer.......................................................... Hymnal 179
A Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;
give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory
forever and ever. Amen.
Matthew 6:9-13
10
blessing
P The Lord bless you and keep you.
The Lord make His face shine upon you
and be gracious unto you.
The Lord look upon you with his favor
and give you peace. Numbers 6:24-26
C Amen.
closing hymn............ Ride On, Ride On In Majesty HYMNAL 441
Ride on, ride on in majesty
Hark! All the tribes hosanna cry
O Savior meek, pursue Thy road
With palms and scattered garments strowed
Ride on, ride on in majesty
In lowly pomp ride on to die
O Christ, Thy triumphs now begin
O’er captive death and conquered sin
Ride on, ride on in majesty
The angel armies of the sky
Look down with sad and wond’ring eyes
To see the approaching sacrifice
Ride on, ride on in majesty
Thy last and fiercest strife is nigh
The Father on His sapphire throne
Awaits His own anointed Son
Ride on, ride on in majesty
In lowly pomp ride on to die
Bow Thy meek head to mortal pain
Then take, O God, Thy pow’r, and reign
