Where to Begin
If you can tear your eyes from your new bling - it’s time to start planning!
Once the engagement ring is on your finger the urge to plan your big
day is overwhelming! Before you get carried away with all your
wedding ideas, create a game plan to keep you on task, budget,
and most importantly, keep you from forgetting any important
details that can become a big stressor as your wedding date draws
near. The list below will create a framework for your plan - add more
categories as needed for your wedding.

Plan your guest list (you’ll need the # of guests to figure out
the rest of the list!)

Keep in mind that some vendors will not contract out longer than
1 year. Make sure you have a contract BEFORE you make a deposit
and check that the contract has a cancellation policy in it. We
recommend that you keep a folder or binder of ideas, contracts,
and information so you can stay focused on the tasks at hand. Below
are some helpful hints for creating your planning binder:

Create a contact list with names, phone numbers, email
addresses of everyone involved in your wedding (include all
vendors, venues, attendants)

Include a clear zipper pouch to hold fabric samples, business
cards, etc.
•
Get some divider tabs, and organize the binder however it
makes the most sense to you. (the topics above make for a
good starting point)
•
Have some sticky notes on hand, you never know when you’ll
need them
•
Make sure to keep all signed contracts together in this binder.
•
Timelines and checklists can be very helpful, so that nothing
gets overlooked.
•
Keep snippets & printouts of examples of things you like to
show your decorator, florist, baker, etc.

Anna & Ryan Raprager | April 7, 2012
Ryan and Anna shared a circle of friends in high school, but they never crossed paths until Ryan was hired at
Super One and the two began to work together. Anna believes that everything happens for a reason, and credits
Ryan for her relationship with her biological father. She comes from a split family, and grew up with her mother
and step-dad, whom she always referred to her as her dad because “that is what he had always been to her.” It
turns out that Ryan’s father worked with Anna’s father and they had known each other for years because of their
employment. A few months into the couple’s relationship Ryan told Anna about their dad’s working together. As it
turns out Ryan had known a lot of Anna’s family before she had (or what she could remember of them anyway.)
Because of Ryan, Anna now has a growing relationship with her father, step mother, two sisters and brother. The
couple dated for 4 years, bought a house, and got two dogs before Ryan proposed on Easter with an Easter Egg
Hunt. Each egg had a clue leading her to the next egg, finally leading to a Golden Egg, that’s when Ryan got
down on one knee and inside the Golden egg was Anna’s ring. It was just a coincidence that they got married
on Easter weekend- “it fell into place”.

Dress:
Initially, Anna was looking online and found a dress that she fell
in love with, but since it was a designer dress, she just knew she
couldn’t/shouldn’t afford it. She ended up settling on a dress, but
never really had her “ah ha!” moment with it. Then one day she
happened to find the first dress she had fell in love with listed on
craigslist!
Flowers:
Bride made them herself with silk flowers she purchased online.
Special Detail:
“Our wedding was on a nontraditional weekend. It was Easter
weekend at the most beautiful place in downtown Duluth.”
RECEPTION:
Friends and family joined the newlyweds in Greysolon Ballroom for
a Pasta Buffet chosen not only because it is the couples’ favorite
food but also because it is not the traditional wedding buffet.
The couple wanted something non-traditional for their first dance,
and when they both heard “No Matter What” by Papa Roach on
the radio they knew it was their song. Since the Ballroom is so
beautiful by itself they kept the table decor simple with floating
candles in three cylinder vases done by Occasions.
CEREMONY:
The couple included a sand ceremony that also had the bride
and groom’s mothers included to represent both families coming
together. Anna said “She wanted to run down the aisle and jump
in Ryan’s arms, mushy? Yes but it’s true.” After saying “I Do” the
newlyweds walked down the aisle to ‘Fit to be tied’ by T Carter.

Paint Your Wedding with Light

Unless you’ve recently been to a wedding that had uplighting, the
idea of reception lighting is probably not on your list of wedding
must haves. Other than wanting a ceremony on the beach at sunset,
most brides-to-be don’t think of lighting as part of the backdrop
for their wedding. Uplighting is placing lighting fixtures along the
walls around the room, making a very powerful statement. Lighting
can draw special attention to parts of the room by having a glowing
cocktail table, a lit up ice sculpture, or a spotlight on the cake for
example. The options for bringing in special lighting can be as simple
as a few lights behind the head table to as complex as
having the Northern Lights dancing on the ceiling.
When considering specialty lighting, the first question to ask is
where is the reception going to be? The size and layout of the room
determines how many lights are going to be needed, which affects
the price. Ask the lighting professional if they have lit that room
before and if you can look at pictures of it. Your venue choice might
have a set price, or several options depending on how many rooms
and hallways there are.
With today’s LED technology, uplights can be almost any color you
want them to be. You can start with lighting the room in a single
color, or go with two alternating colors, three colors or a whole
rainbow around the room. Lighting colors can coordinate with the
decorating theme for your linens, floral arrangements, bridesmaids’
dresses, or spring and fall colors, etc. I highly recommend asking
for a meeting with your lighting professional to see their availability
and to choose your color in person to ensure that it is exactly what
you want. Be specific in your color choice because purple can range
from a soft lavender and eggplant to a version of hot pink, and some
colors don’t translate well as a color of light. For example, some
popular wedding colors are gold and silver, but translate into yellow
and white light respectively. Also, the venue you choose can have
an influence on the lighting as well. A wall that is painted blue looks
best if it is lit with one of the colors in the blue family from the teal
to purple spectrum.
Battery operated lights are another option, and are great for large
columns in the middle of the room that have no outlets in them,
glowing cocktail table skirts, and play a large role in outdoor tent
lighting. Lighting options for battery operated lights are bountiful as
well, but battery life if directly related to color choice and should be

considered when planning. There are also submersible battery
operated lights that your florist can put in the center piece vases.
To go really over the top with decorating in light is to use gobos.
A gobo is a pattern of light that can be projected on the walls or
ceilings. The most common type of wedding gobo has the bride and
groom’s names lit up on a wall or the dance floor. Gobos don’t just
have to be your name though; they can be patterns like bamboo
shoots, leaves, or music notes. There are thousands of pre-designed
patterns that you can choose from to match any theme you wish.
Lighting technology has made huge improvements in recent years.
There are now lights that produce specific effects like laser stars or
a water reflection. Your wedding has so many more options than
candles and Christmas lights today. Think about your reception
location and ask yourself “how can I paint this place with light?”

being the one, but just to be sure she tried on some
others to check out options, and then put the first
one on again and everyone knew it was the one.
RECEPTION:
During cocktail/appetizer hour the guests played yard games in the barn yard.
The bride and a friend handmade some little books with questions for the
guests to write their advice in during dinner. The couple chose a buffet
dinner of Chicken piccata, green beans, and garlic red potatoes. Pro Sound
and Light Show was the DJ for the evening and made the event memorable
and so much fun. “He was interactive, danced with the kids, brought glow
necklaces and bracelets, and initiated some great games.”
TIPS:
“I think our wedding was stress free because we chose the perfect venue that
had everything we wanted complete with a caterer and excellent staff.”

The couple met on Match.com. Brenda signed up Jan. 1st and on Jan 3rd they were
“introduced,” they communicated via email a few times and then met. At their first date
Brenda knew that they really had something and the right chemistry. She could just tell it
was meant to be. They were engaged 10 months later on the day before Thanksgiving.

Brenda put together the ceremony from
different things she found online, she wrote
the opening and picked other readings
and songs based off of what she liked from
other examples. The couple’s ceremony was
religious with personalized traditional vows.
The bride’s niece was their “ring princess.”
Brenda handmade her ring pillow. The barn
has a hydraulic wall that was opened when
their ceremony was taking place, so the
backdrop to their ceremony was the the
beautiful hills behind the barn.

Start pinning, googling, etc to determine likes, dislikes, theme colors
Get yourself organized with an email address, binder, apps or wedding website.
Decide on a budget
Begin compiling your guest list.
Select locations (city and venue) for ceremony and reception. Reserve date.
Determine Bridal Party size and decide which friends and fam to include in your wedding.
Start the search for reception entertainment.
Start the search for the perfect caterer. Taste samples before making a decision.
9 - 12 Months
Reserve any rental supplies you may need (tents, chairs, decor)
Track down and make arrangements with a legal officiant. Set-up times for pre-marriage
counseling and planning your ceremony.
Visit local bridal shops and try on gowns and accessories. The earlier you select your gown the
better - more time for alterations.
Decide on bridesmaids gowns and accessories
6 - 9 Months
Book your photographer. Look at their portfolios before you make your decision.
Formally announce your engagement, send out save the dates.
Select and book ceremony musicians. Make selections for your prelude, processional and
recessional.
Select wedding bands.
Discuss your honeymoon plans, first with your honey and then with your travel agent. Nail down
details early so there is less to stress about later.
Select the men’s formalwear. Don’t forget to remind your groomsmen to get measured! If they
are out-of-town have them go to a local tux shop for measurements and send the results your
way.
4 - 6 Months
Finish guest list. Ask parents if there are any special friends they would like to include.
Order your wedding invitations and stationary. Remember to order 10% more than you think
you’ll need for those last minute invites or invites that don’t make it to their intended guests.
Select a baker and order your wedding cake. Can’t decide on flavors yet - don’t worry, as long
as you have a baker reserved you can usually choose flavors closer to the date.
Reserve accommodations for out-of-town guests. Remember to check on room availability over
the next few months to make sure there are still rooms available.
Help the Mother-of-the-Bride and Mother-of-the-Groom select their dresses. They’ll want to
coordinate with your colors.
Make your final floral decisions
2 -4 Months
Arrange for your wedding day transportation. Renting a limo? Make sure you know who will be
riding with you and when and where you should be picked up and dropped off!

Start addressing invitations. Ask parents for Christmas lists for addresses or check out
online directories.
Confirm ceremony plans with the officiant. Let the officiant know who is doing the music and
what you expect to happen during the ceremony.
Plan the rehearsal and groom’s dinner.
Arrange for decorations. Make a list of what you need and look for them over the next couple
months.
Make your hair appointments. Find styles that work with your veil. Bring it with to the stylist.

Stamp & mail your invitations. Get them weighed to insure the proper postage.

Have your final gown fitting. Wear whatever “under things” you plan to use on the big day.
While you’re at it, have all the bridesmaids try on their dresses with “under things” as well.

Apply for your marriage license. Both bride and groom will need to be present with photo ID’s
Purchase gifts for attendants.
Get your accessories ready; ring pillow, candles, guestbook/pen, flower girl hair accessories etc.
Start keeping track of all the gifts and cards you receive , so you can send thank you’s later.
Confirm: rehearsal time/date with your bridal party, officiant and locations.
Prepare for name changes on all your accounts and driver’s license. You must have your
certified marriage certificate before you can change your driver’s license.

Sara and Dave met at a bar in Fargo through mutual friends while attending college in that area. The next day Sara
was going through the pictures on her camera and wondered who the guy was that she had bunch of pictures
with (Dave), and also noticed “How horrible her hair looked”. Later that day she went to a local Great Clips to get
a haircut and Dave walked in and ended up getting his hair cut in the chair next to her. It was awkward because
they kept making eye contact in the mirror but didn’t say anything the whole time. That evening they both ended
up at the same bar again, and Sara said that with some “liquid courage” they began to talk. Their relationship
began there. The couple endured a period of a long distance relationship due to work and school, and as soon as
they could they continued the relationship together. A few days before Christmas, Dave asked Sara if she wanted
to go to the Science Museum (Sara said Dave is a “Science Geek,” so she said “oh sure hun..”) It was a bit weird
because he sort of told her what to wear, and took her out to dinner beforehand, then later that evening when they
got home, he asked if she wanted to open an early Christmas gift? Sara thought it was a bit odd, but of course said
yes. She opened it up and thought it was just a photo album, but then he said you have to open it… inside was a
note from him and the ring.

Dress:
Sara’s dress was “totally not what she thought she would get.”
It was a strapless A-Line dress with elegant embroidery and
beading pattern on bodice and on the skirt and the train.
Cake:
The couple had a white cake w/fresh raspberry puree and
buttercream frosting.
Ceremony:
The couple did a sand ceremony, during the pouring of sand
Sara finished first and Dave still had quite a bit of his teal sand
left which ended up on top. This added a bit of humor to the
ceremony. Sara and Dave personalized traditional vows. The
music was performed by family members, the bride’s Dad,
sang the Lord’s Prayer and during their unity sand, the
bride’s younger sister and niece, sang the music at the
beginning of the ceremony.
RECEPTION:
“Walking into a room filled with all of the people you love and
care about is one of the most endearing parts of a wedding.
What more could you ask?” The dance floor was full all night
long. While the reception was from 6-12pm, it seemed to go
by in a matter of minutes for the couple.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
Being a teacher, Sara wanted to be sure the kids at the ceremony
had something to do. Using etsy.com, she personalized a kids’
activity booklet complete with a true-to-life cartoon representation
of Dave and herself.
HONEYMOON:
Sara almost won the Grand Prize at the 2012 Duluth Bridal Show,
but unfortunately she had already left. Instead they went to
Vegas for a week. The couple went to dinners and saw shows
and enjoyed walking around and seeing the sights.

The Color Mint – fresh, modern, and retro all at once. This color
plays nicely with others, and it is also looks good on just about
everyone. Best thing is it can be incorporated into almost
anything: bridesmaids’ dresses, shoes, jewelry, centerpieces,
cakes, invitations, flowers…. Anything you can imagine!

Backdrops – add a nice touch to the décor, and can be
customized to any size, color, and style. They are used behind the
head table, gift tables, wedding cake displays, altars, ceremonies,
photo booth, buffet tables, speakers’ podiums….Consider
streamers, origami, or your own design.

Brides with Braids – The braid has made a comeback and many
brides are incorporating it into their wedding day do. With such a
variety, every bride can find some type of braid that she will love
to wear for her wedding and still be different.

Birch and Bark – Rustic and refreshing, Nature will continue to
influence weddings this year. Birch can be incorporated into
anything from centerpieces, cake stands, decorations, and more!
