Often when planning their wedding couples start by choosing the location, there are 110 licensed venues where you can marry, ranging from stately homes to country pubs and 7 attractively furnished Registration Offices these are featured on pages 14-17. This guide includes the legal requirements of getting married. When planning your wedding in Staffordshire we appreciate you need to find services that are local to you, information on a wide range of services are detailed within the booklet. The County Register Office is located at Staffordshire Place in the heart of Stafford town centre. The Boscobell room provides a large contemporary ceremony room that seats 50. Stafford - 1 Staffordshire Place, Stafford, ST16 2LP 4 Once you have chosen the venue for your marriage, you will need to reserve the Registrar to attend the venue you have chosen or to book the Registration office. Our staff will help tailor the ceremony to your requirements. We have a choices booklet which makes suggestions of the readings you may wish to include and the promises you can choose to make to each other. If you wish to view the ceremony room please call 0300 111 8001. Giving Notice Both you and the person you are marrying are required to give separate notices of marriage at a cost of £35 each. The earliest you can give notice is 12 months prior to the date of the marriage. If your paperwork is complete and after waiting a clear 15 days, an authority for your marriage to take place will be issued by the office where your notice was given. You must both have lived in any district in England or Wales for seven full days immediately before the date you give notice of your marriage. It does not matter if either of you moves to a different address once you have given notice. The authority is a legal document which allows your marriage to take place and is valid for 12 months from the date you gave notice. If you are giving notice in Staffordshire you can visit any of our offices. Please call 0300 111 8001 to make an appointment. If you live outside the county you must give notice at the Registration Office in the district where you have lived for seven full days immediately prior to you giving notice. If you are marrying outside Staffordshire but live in Staffordshire you must make arrangements with the Office where you intend to marry to book the time and location. You then need to give notice at one of the Staffordshire Offices listed on pages 14-17. The authority for marriage may be collected from the office where notice was given, However, you can request that the “authority” be posted directly to the office dealing with your ceremony or home address. If you are not a British citizen It may be necessary for you to attend an office which is called a Designated Register Office to give notice of marriage and the Registration Service will advise on this. Documents you need to show us When you give notice of your marriage, you need to be able to prove your identity. Passports are ideal for this purpose. If you do not hold or cannot produce a passport, we will accept birth certificates as proof of identity. However, if you are using your birth certificate as proof of identity, and you were born after January 1983 we will need to see a full copy of your birth certificate and your mother’s birth certificate. If either of you has been married before, either in this country or abroad you will be required to provide evidence of the termination of that marriage by death, divorce or nullity. If your divorce papers have not been issued in England or Wales we will need to see not only the original divorce document but also a translation. There may also be a delay in issuing the authority for marriage. If either of you are under 18, we will need to see proof that your parents (or legal guardians) agree to the marriage. If your parents are divorced, we may need to see the court order that gives custody to one of them. The Registrar can advise you on this matter. 5 The Ceremony Immediately before the ceremony the Registrar will meet with you both in private, (you can be seen separately if you prefer and request so in advance) to establish the details to be recorded in the marriage register. Each of you will need to give your father’s full name and occupation. Can I be given away? Civil Marriages are conducted in English. However, if either of the parties to a marriage is unable to speak or understand English, an interpreter must be present. The Registrar will be glad to discuss this with you before the wedding day. Can people take photos or videos of the ceremony? If you have hearing problems you may need to have an interpreter or lip speaker at the ceremony. The Registrar will be able to provide more information when you book your ceremony. FAQ Can we write our own vows? You must say the legal vows at your ceremony but you can choose to add some extra words, if you wish. Please return them with your choices to ensure they are included in the ceremony. 6 Yes, of course. You can choose how to start your ceremony, whether you wish to be walked in by a member of your family or whether you wish to enter together as a couple. We suggest that you have one main photographer that takes official photographs during the ceremony although we request that the use of a flash is minimal. It is possible for a video to be recorded of your ceremony. Can we have a ceremony in our back garden? Currently, the law requires that a marriage and civil partnership ceremony must be held at a licenced venue and so this prevents the option to have a ceremony in your house. To book your ceremony please contact 0300 111 8001 Religious Ceremonies Church of England Other Religious Denominations When you have set the date, make an appointment to see the incumbent of the church you intend to marry in. Marriages which are conducted according to the rite of other religious denominations also require a notice of marriage to be given to the Registrar. If the priest/minister is not authorised to solemnise marriages, a charge will be made for the Registrar to attend of £84.00. C of E clergy are authorised Registrars so there is no need to give notice at the Register Office. Banns are read in each parish on three Sundays before the wedding to announce your intention to marry. Roman Catholic If you wish to marry in a Catholic Church, you need to speak to the parish priest to make arrangements but a notice of marriage must be given at your local register office. For more information please contact 0300 111 8001 7 8 Weddings Abroad If you wish to marry abroad, according to the laws of that country, you must ensure that you find out and follow the regulations. To marry in another country there are minimum residency requirements and this will be built into the overall length of your stay. Most countries will need to see certain documents. The embassy of the country where you wish to be married should be contacted for first hand information. In some cases you will be asked for a certificate of no impediment. This can be obtained by giving notice to your local Registration Office and you may need to wait up to 21 clear days before the certificate of no impediment can be issued. Although there is no expiry date printed on these certificates, different countries have their own rules and the certificate may only be valid for a three month period from the date of giving notice. Information is given on www.fco.gov.uk Whilst legally recognised, marriages of British subjects in a foreign country cannot be registered in England unless one of the couple is a serving member of or attached to the British Armed Forces at the time of marriage. However, where this is not the case, there is provision for a record of the marriage to be lodged with the General Register Office (Telephone 0300 123 1837). There is no time limit but only original documents may be lodged and only the British Consul for the district where the marriage took place may send the documents to the General Register Office. This only applies to certain countries, and where it is possible, a fee is charged for this. Where documents have been placed with the General Register Office, marriage certificates will be able to be obtained from them at some time in the future. A full list of these countries may be viewed on www.gov.uk. Changes to your passport If a woman wishes to change the name on her passport for use immediately after the wedding, the Passport Office will either issue a new standard UK passport which will be valid from the date of the wedding or alternatively will amend her existing passport to show her future married name. Neither of these will be issued more than three months prior to the marriage ceremony. Application forms can be obtained from the Post Office or downloaded from the passport agency. Once the marriage preliminaries have been completed, the forms can be filled in by the applicant and the Minister of Religion or Registrar who is to celebrate the marriage. The form should then be sent to the Passport Office together with the application for the passport or amendment to the passport. If you are going abroad on honeymoon, remember to book air tickets etc. in the name you will have in your passport at the time of travelling. 9 Civil Partnerships Who is eligible? To have a civil partnership you must both be of the same sex, not already be in a Civil Partnership or marriage, be 16 years of age or older, and not be related. In England and Wales, individuals who are aged 16 and 17 will have to obtain the written consent of their parents (or legal guardians) before registering a Civil Partnership. What happens at a Civil Partnership Registration? A Civil Partnership will be registered once the couple have signed the Civil Partnership document in the presence of a Registrar and two witnesses. Can we change our names after registering a Civil Partnership? After registering a Civil Partnership, some people might want to change their surname to that of their partner, or a couple may choose to hyphenate their name. Government departments and agencies such as the Passport Agency and the DVLA will accept Civil Partnership certificates in the same way that they accept marriage as evidence for changing names. For more information there is a leaflet on Civil Partnerships available by calling 0300 111 8001. Can we have a ceremony? Yes, you will be able to arrange a ceremony in addition to the signing of the legal documentation if you wish, but a ceremony is not required under the Act. It is up to you to decide. We will be able to offer you a ceremony which could include readings and promises of your own choice. The ceremony can be held at any Registration Office or the venues listed at the back of the brochure. 10 Renewal of Marriage Vows Say ‘I do’... again This ceremony is for any married couple that wish to celebrate renewing their marriage vows in a unique and personal ceremony. Often these ceremonies are associated with a special wedding anniversary, such as the tenth, twenty-fifth, fortieth, etc, but the ceremony is just as appropriate for couples at any stage of marriage. To arrange a ceremony please phone 0300 111 8001. Renewal of marriage vows ceremonies are available at Registration Offices and all of the venues listed in this brochure. It is sometimes particularly relevant to those who have been through a period which put a strain on their relationship, but who wish to celebrate their renewed commitment to each other or for couples who have married abroad and wish to include their family and friends. 11 12 Re-registration According to law, a child’s birth will need to be re-registered if the parents have entered into a marriage or civil partnership with each other since the birth. At this time, a new birth record will be created showing the child as a child of the parents marriage or civil partnership, replacing the original registration and all future copy birth certificates will be issued from this new record. To complete the re-registration, both parents need to fill in a form LA1 which can be obtained from any Register Office in England or Wales. Once you have both completed and signed the form, you need to send it to the Register Office where you would like to have the re-registation appointment, together with the child’s birth certificate and your marriage/civil partnership certificate. If you have more than one child, you will need to complete an LA1 form for each child. You do not have to return to the same Register Office where you originally registered your child’s birth. The new birth record will still have to be entered in their registers, but if you have moved since your child was born, you can complete a re-registration appointment at the Register Office most convenient to your new location. That office will take all of the relevant information from you and forward it on your behalf to the Register Office holding the original birth entry for processing - this is called a declaration. You will need to book an appointment to re-register your child or children at any of our Register Offices and it can only happen after your marriage or civil partnership ceremony has taken place; re-registration cannot be completed in advance. To obtain an LA1 form or if you have any queries on re-registration, please call 0300 111 8001. Only one parent needs to attend the reregistration appointment (although both are welcome) and there is no charge for this service. The only cost that you will incur is if you wish to purchase a new, full birth certificate for your child which you will need for many official purposes, such as passport applications. Naming Ceremonies When families are celebrating the birth of a new baby, a Naming Ceremony is an opportunity to welcome the new child into the family or to celebrate the joining of a new family. You will be able to choose unique promises to make to your child and select supporting adults from friends and family and also include grandparents within the ceremony. There are a wide selection of poems, readings and promises that can be included in the ceremony and read by the celebrant or family and friends. To arrange a ceremony please phone 0300 111 8001. Naming Ceremonies are available at Registration Offices and all of the venues listed in the brochure. 13 Registration Offices Newcastle under Lyme - 20 Sidmouth Avenue, ST5 0QN The Newcastle Registration Office is located in the Brampton area of Newcastle and is suitably located for reception venues following the ceremony. The venue itself offers a large car park and secluded garden with ornamental black ironwork furniture, making an ideal backdrop for treasured photographs of your day. The Ceremony Room is semi-circular, with venetian chandeliers and mahogany furniture and seats up to 50 guests. The bow window area is an ideal area for smaller weddings with just witnesses. Our secluded position is just a short walk from the town centre and the heart of Newcastle and is the perfect venue for all ceremonies. Leek - Stockwell Street, ST13 6HQ The Dove Room, located in Moorlands House, in the heart of Leek provides a light and spacious ceremony room. Decorated in lavender and ivory the room seats 40 and it makes the perfect venue for a large wedding party. Brough Park which is adjacent offers many photo opportunities for the wedding party. There are also a number of car parks located nearby. 14 Registration Offices Cannock - 5 Victoria Street, WS11 1AG Set in our own secluded grounds with a generous car park, the elegant and peaceful Ceremony Room has soft furnishings in Wedgwood blue and pale gold. There is seating for 32 guests. The double doors to the Ceremony Room allow a traditional entrance for the bride, whilst the ornamental garden provides the ideal setting for photographs. Our secluded position and ambience is the perfect venue for both the more intimate and convivial. We have car parking and full disabled access. Wombourne - Civic Centre, WV5 9HA Set in its own beautiful gardens, with generous car parking and full disabled access, the room is air-conditioned with soft furnishings of burnt sienna and gold, making it a perfect venue for the more intimate wedding party. The Ceremony Room provides comfortable seating for approximately 25 guests, and the gardens are an ideal backdrop for photographs. 15 Registration Offices Lichfield - Old Library Building, Bird Street, WS13 6PN The popular Registration Office in Lichfield is set in an old library building, adjacent to the magnificent Beacon Park and offers many photo opportunities. The 30 seat Ceremony Room is richly furnished in gold fabric and mahogany furniture. There is a wide choice of local restaurants and eateries which are close by and will provide a perfect setting for an informal or formal reception. 16 Registration Offices Tamworth - Church Street, B79 7BX Located in the centre of Tamworth, the Registration Office has a choice of two rooms. The Swan Room seats 60 with a feature ceiling and chandelier, whilst the Dove Room is ideal for smaller parties comfortably seating 20. The Ceremony Rooms are furnished in claret and gold. The office has full disabled access and is conveniently located near to local restaurants for wedding day celebrations. Burton-upon-Trent - 57-60 High Street, DE14 1JS Burton-upon-Trent Registration Office is set in a retro Georgian style building in the centre of Burton-upon-Trent. The Ceremony Room on the ground floor has seating for up to 55 guests and is furnished with light gold carpet and curtains.
