The Chapter then had several members participate in FANG Day which was an open house at 125th Florida Air National Guard Fighter Wing at Jacksonville International Airport. We also had members of the Falcon Chapter judge projects at the local and regional science fairs. Finally, we had the James Rogers concert at the Alhambra Theatre in March. In the area of awards the chapter presented the AFA Airman of the Bruce Fouraker, Pres, Year award to Cadet Colonel Alyssa Jessen with the Bartram Trails High School’s Air Force JROTC program. In addition the award for Airman of the Year will be given to Andrew Jackson’s AFJROTC Airman of the Year Malay Matthews. Over the next two months an additional five awards will be given out. We will have an Award’s Banquet at the Crowne Plaza Riverwalk on Thursday, April 16, where our educators will discuss the programs at their schools. There will also be a brief presentation on the Falcon Chapter’s participation in judging local science fairs. This is a part of the work that we do in the area of STEM. Our first concern is to have more member participation; about 10 – 12 out of 470 members participate on a regular basis. In order to run projects and be a true service club, we need to have a better participation rate. One of the directives from the national level is that the Air Force Association be a service organization and not a social group. Our organization will be meeting the first Tuesday of every month (except September 9) in the restaurant at the Wyndham Riverwalk. These meetings provide a short briefing on the chapter’s upcoming projects and opportunities with events at the state and national level. Please attend a meeting and find out what the Falcon Chapter is doing in the community Bruce A Fouraker, President Lawrence (Larry) Belge 904-645-9243 [email protected] Bru c e Fou ra k e r VETERAN AFFAIRS Medra Keyser 904-277-2942 [email protected] CAP LIAISON Greg Stritch 904-741-7320 [email protected] Falcon Members Support Aero Ed Students at Area Science Fairs Aerospace Education under the STEM program is ongoing with direction from Falcon Chapter AE VP Carla Chin and numerous science teachers within North East Florida. On January 6, 2015, several members of the AFA Falcon Chapter Number 399 took a tour of the plant. The basic airframe is shipped in from Brazil, other parts arrive from the United States and avionics arrive from Israel. This is a truly international effort that culminates in Jacksonville. The tour was conducted by test pilot Evan Whitehouse and the seven members on the tour started out with an overview of the process from a stairway in the assembly plant. The process starts with the wings being attached to the airframe. The next step involves the installation of the turboprop engine and the attachment of the propeller. Armour is added to the cockpit to help protect the pilot during combat. Next the avionics are added along with weapons systems. The aircraft is designed for close support; but has limited ammunition. The 50 caliber machine guns only fire 250 rounds. The plane mainly depends on small bombs to attack enemy ground positions. The planes ordinance can also include sidewinder missiles to defend itself in the air though its main purpose is not air to air combat. The A-29 has been used for years to interdict drug smugglers in Brazil. The new use that the planes in Jacksonville are destined for is to allow the Afghan Air Force to provide air support for ground troops in the war on terror. This will be an important part of the puzzle as Afghanistan takes over its defenses. The United States will move to an advisory role making the Afghan Air Force an important player. Students use the design and modeling software to design an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) set up for search and rescue. (Reference photo at right). The learning curve for the industry leading CAD program was steep for the instructional staff in the beginning but the scholars have quite taken to it. In addi- tor for an approach landing in return to an airfield. tion to steady training for our Air Force Search and Rescue (SAR) missions, the Aerospace Education and Cadet programs have been growing rapidly. During the year our cadets helped facilitate Aerospace Education outreach activities in several district schools and public libraries. In addition to our usual outreach in the local schools and libraries, cadets and senior members served at the Blue Angels Air Show at NAS JAX this year as well as staffing a tent at the Greater Jacksonville Fair. The JAX Navy event included a static display with the aircraft as well as activities for the young people. The Fair event included our portable flight simulators, model rockets, landing a model bi-plane on a string and Emergency Service & Drill demonstrations. In the years events reached over 3500 adults and young people with Aerospace Education outreach programs in North Florida. We look to 2015 in developing our cadets to meet todays commitments to community and the nation.
