`
Happy New Year to everyone! I hope your Holidays were great and that Santa
got you everything you asked for to help make your 2012 fishing season a success. There are some great new products out there this year, not only for open
water fishing but also for the hard water fanatics as well! New cranking reels,
new fishing sticks, propane powered ice augers, new Vexilar’s with built in underwater cameras……the list goes on & on! Hopefully Santa dropped one or
two of those items under your tree for you this Christmas! Speaking of “hard
water”, as we ring in the New Year we are missing that familiar blanket of white
which normally covers everything in site. Our area lakes are still open and
geese are hanging around wondering “when’s the ice coming?” Kids who are
off for their Christmas break have had to endure the lack of snow and ice and
have opted for other indoor activities to pass the time instead of going tubing,
snowboarding & ice fishing! My snow blower is poised and ready to go, sitting
in my garage waiting for that 1st measurable snowfall so it can be put to good use! For those of us
“chomping at the bit” to get out on the hard water and do some ice fishing; we’ll have to settle for traveling
up North for the time being. That is until Mother Nature decides to send that cold Arctic air mass our way!
Normally by this time we’d have had at least 2 weeks of early ice fishing and the panfish bite was always
fast & furious on the t-channels……but not this year! Crazy as it sounds, I know some club members who
are still fishing open water in their boats and they are cleaning up on a fantastic “late season” musky bite!
Unfortunately, many of us have winterized and stored our boats in anticipation of the “deep freeze” and we
missed out on some late season musky action. Lot’s of club stuff going on as usual with the on-set of the
New Year! On Thursday January 12th, 2012 our 1st speaker of the 2012 season will be the legendary
Pete Maina!! Pete is North America’s number one authority on Muskie and Pike fishing. He is internationally known for his prowess with muskie & northern pike. He is an entrepreneur, an accomplished author, a
professional photographer, TV show host, speaker and OWAA member (Outdoor Writers Association of
America). Pete currently has two BOOKS published on muskie fishing and we will be raffling off some
signed copies at the meeting! Admission will be $10.00/person at the door and seating will be limited to
150 seats, so get there early to kick off your 2012 musky season in style!! We will have an “all you can
eat” German buffet for $13.00/person that evening. Food will be served starting at 6:00PM and the meeting will begin promptly at 7:00PM. The Chicago Musky Show will run January 13th-15th at Harper College
in Palatine. Everything you could possibly want will be at this show. Whether you need to fill your musky
box with some new tackle, plan a musky trip or just attend some great seminars, it’s all available right at
this show. For those who look forward to the annual Lure Swap on Saturday night following the closing of
the Musky Show, it will once again be held at Official’s Time Out upstairs in the Poplar Creek Bowling Alley
off Higgins Road in Hoffman Estates. See the FRV website for additional details at www.frvmuskie.com
Our chapter will have a booth at the show and we’ll be selling raffle tickets for a great musky rod & reel
combo. Stop by our booth and say hello & purchase some tickets! The winning ticket will be drawn at the
conclusion of the show on Sunday. All proceeds will go to funding the FRV Chapter programs and as always we appreciate your support. I’d like to thank everyone who donated canned & dry goods at our December meeting for the Elgin Community Crisis Center. They were overwhelmed at the amount of food I
dropped off to them and they were very appreciative; as this year’s donations are down significantly from
the previous year! Thanks to all of you for your kindness and generosity! Finally, I am excited to begin the
New Year as your club President for the final leg of my 2-year term. I do so with some fresh new faces &
ideas seated on the FRV board. We have a lot of work to do in 2012 and I am confident that with the people and processes we have in place, we can achieve the goals of growing our Research, Stocking and
Youth programs in 2012. I hope everyone has a prosperous 2012 and may this be the year that you catch
the fish of a lifetime! May your 2012 be filled with many great memories! Here’s to your continued health
and happiness in the coming New Year!
Until next month………ice a few slabs!

“LURE SWAP MEETS” Highly Suggested, by Todd Minor
After the holidays, one of the things I really look forward to are the upcoming muskie shows. Seeing what is new in
the musky world, catching up with friends you may only see at the shows, good seminars, and pool demos too. Another
thing I really look forward to are the lure swap meets. If you have not been to one, I highly suggest it. Most of the
Musky shows have them and I always go to the Chicago and Milwaukee show swap meets. They are always held on a
Saturday evening and draw in hundreds of people from all over the United States and Canada. They usually start
around 7pm but I like to get there earlier to see what everybody is setting up and getting the "pick" of the crop can net
you an almost new to very used lure at a discount price. There is a lot of great stuff at these swaps, not just lures, rods
reels, electronics, if it can be carried in, you may find it at the swap meet. Then there are the people, lots of them. This
is a good thing as they come from all over, many with vast experience. What a great place to network and learn! Alcohol is served at these events, and as the evening wears on; you can make better deals and learn new things that perhaps could not have been done at the beginning of the evening!
The Chicago Swap meet is hosted by muskiefirst.com
and they are doing a canned food drive which will put you in
a raffle for some great prizes. It is located at Officials Time
Out in Hoffman Estates. It is in the shopping center on the
corner of Moon Lake Drive and Higgins Rd, 10 minutes from
the musky show...
The Milwaukee swap is located at the Midway Motel on
Mooreland Rd and I-94 in Brookfield WI. In the past, they
have used this event to raise funds for Operation Muskie...
See you there!

B
Based on your input, our FRV Outings Director Jim “Jimmy Z” Ziebka has selected the Madison, WI

which stretch longer than the Detroit 8 Mile!! Not only a numbers lake, St Clair produces a tremendous
density of PHAT 50 inch plus fish. Many members have hooked up with their p.b.’s from these waters…
k
Jimmy Z will be coordinating the trip based on input from previous FRV Guest Speaker, and acclaimed
LSC Guide, Chae Dolsen. The late summer or fall dates for the FRV “Last Fling” are also “TBD”...
k
Outing Dates will be published on the FRV Website & Newsletter as soon as available…

2012 News Years Resolution!!!
2012 is right around the corner, and we want to ramp up member participation in Our Club Outings next year. Outings are a great way to meet fellow club members & share stories. In addition, a well known Musky Guide - who specializes on the local lakes will usually join the group
for dinner on the 1st evening - to share his tips… Thank you all for your suggestions...
