EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Summary of the Enquiry
It is our understanding that The British Footwear Association (BFA) represents
130 key companies supplying footwear and employing over 9,000 people.
Member organizations cover manufacturing, importing and design and source
specialists. They include major international brands and smaller innovative
labels as well as high profile suppliers to the High Street.
BFA supports its members in all aspects of their business including providing
specialist advice, marketing services and detailed practical advice on
exporting. The BFA is responsible for representing the industry’s interests with
the Government and other trade bodies and for raising the national profile of
the sector.
The BFA acts as the primary link between UK footwear companies and
leading trade shows, including FN Platform and Sole Commerce in the US,
and works with the Government to maximize grants to support UK footwear
companies at these exhibitions. The BFA has requested contact information
for US agents, showrooms, distributors and retailers, which will allow
members to accelerate their progress in the US market following market visits.
UKTI will update an OMIS for the BFA in 2008, which address the same
topics.
UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) will aim to provide the following updates to a
previous OMIS delivered by UKTI to BFA in 2008:


Updated contact information for the 42 listed footwear agents/sales
representatives listed serving the East and/or West Coast of the US.

Updated contact information for the 6 distributors listed.

Updated contact information for the 57 high-end footwear stores (i.e.
department stores, large footwear chains, etc.) identified in the
previous BFA report. These stores carry footwear retailing for around
$250 - $500.

Confirm or update the appropriate decision-maker at each company
and verify contact details. Please note that we will not be ascertaining
interest in taking on a new footwear line or in speaking with the British
Footwear Association. This list will include the following information:
We will update the list of appropriate trade shows, trade publications, and
trade associations.
-3-
Methodology
We began our research by confirming the contact information and description for
each distributor, sales agent/showroom and retailer listed in the 2008 OMIS. We
removed companies that were no longer relevant or out of business. We added a
number of additional contacts to compensate for those that were removed. We
also added a section for online retailers. A variety of sources were used to
complete the research, including:





Telephone discussions with representatives, customers and industry
consultants
Telephone interviews with existing network of industry contacts
Internet searches
Information available from trade associations and other relevant organisations
Information from trade publications
Key Findings & Recommendations
Key findings are as follows:
 BFA members should be aware that agents and distributors generally do
not advertise themselves and it can be a difficult process to identify
appropriate contacts. Many do not even have their own websites. The
industry contacts we spoke with confirmed that most companies identify
agents and distributors though word-of-mouth and attendance at trade
shows.

During the course of our research, we found that sales agents tend to
dominate the footwear market in the US and are more likely to work with a
higher-end company over a distributor. Many industry contacts, including
Peter Mangione, President of the FDRA (Footwear Distributors and
Retailers of America), confirmed that there are very few US distributors
who work with expensive shoe lines. Mr. Mangione explained that most
distributors only work with “findings,” i.e. shoe accessories, such as polish,
laces, etc. They will not normally carry a product that is unknown in the US
market, as there is more risk involved.

Sales agents work on a commission basis and utilise their contacts with
buyers in both retail and department stores to introduce a product into the
US. Sales agents will normally carry several lines as long as they are not
in direct competition. This being said, finding a sales rep with the right
contacts can be difficult, as a good sales agent will not agree to carry a
new line if it will create direct competition with existing ones. The World
Shoe Travelers Association offers a free service for company’s who are
looking to find sales agents. Information on this association has been
included in Section V of this report.

As a result of the lack of shoe distributors in the US, many European
footwear companies are establishing their own distributorships. It is
sometimes easier for a company to hire someone in the US to set up
-4-
distributorship than it can be to find a distributor willing to take on a new
line. It can be hard to find someone in the footwear industry that can
undertake such an operation, but the FDRA can assist in finding someone
who is knowledgeable and knows the US market. Information on the
FDRA has been included in this report in section V.

BFA members should be aware that many established retail and
department stores buy directly from the company rather than going though
an agent or distributor.
Recommendations:
1. Consider the large size of the USA when visiting the market. Long
distances between (and within) cities are the rule, and it is not unusual
to have difficulty scheduling more than three or four appointments in
the course of a day, even within the same city.
2. Sign up to Open to Export, a free online business community designed
to provide UK companies with best-practice knowledge, peer-to-peer
discussion, bespoke advice, and wide-ranging support to successfully
enter new markets and operate overseas.
3. For free access to global business opportunities, register with UKTI to
receive alerts direct to your inbox or via RSS. Over 400 opportunities
are published across all sectors and in over 100 markets each month,
ranging from private sector opportunities and multilateral aid agency
tenders to public sector leads.
4. We recommend BFA members should carefully investigate every
interested distributor/manufacturers' representatives’ claim so as to
deem if the company is appropriate for each member's US marketing
strategy. Many distributors/manufacturers’ representatives sell to
different tiers of the footwear industry, such as independent stores,
retail stores, department stores, etc.
5. BFA members may want to consider targeting appropriate stores
directly. Our research has uncovered that many department and retail
stores buy directly from manufacturers, as opposed to through a
distributors/agent.
6. We recommend that BFA members contact any agents/retailers they
are interested in targeting in advance of the US trade shows they plan
to attend in order to arrange meetings while in Las Vegas or New York.
7. We recommend BFA members to have all agreements or contracts
reviewed by legal counsel familiar with both US and UK contractual
-5-
law. Contracts may include performance benchmarks for sales as well
as all obligations of both parties.
8. BFA members should note that the US is a very price-conscious
market. It is important that the company determine in advance on what
grounds its product will compete in the US. Because Americans are
not as accustomed to dealing in foreign currencies as are Europeans,
all pricing should be given in US dollars. CIF pricing is preferred in the
US.
9. BFA members should consider employing an American as their US
representatives. US nationals are aware of nuances and cultural
business practices that may not seem obvious. US representatives
tend to see higher success rates when compared to their international
counterparts.
10. In the USA, product literature is generally produced in 8.5-inch by 11inch format. Consider producing literature in this size so it will fit into
U.S. files. Be sure to use imperial measurements rather than metric
measurements (except for scientific products), and to have their
literature checked for U.S. spelling changes, grammar, and nuances.

Performance & Impact Monitoring Survey (PIMS)
UKTI is striving to provide the highest quality service to all its clients, and
greatly values feed back from the businesses it has helped. In order to
achieve this, UKTI has commissioned an independent market research
specialist, OMB Research, to conduct surveys on its behalf. The interviews
invite clients to provide frank views on both the quality and usefulness of the
support provided. These surveys are conducted under the market research
code of conduct, which means that all of the survey responses are strictly
confidential, and reported to UKTI only in anonymised aggregate form.
UKTI uses the findings from these surveys to help drive quality and
satisfaction improvement and to inform the focus of its trade services, to
ensure they are meeting the needs of UK exporters as effectively as possible.
As British Footwear Association has been a recipient of UKTI’s Overseas
Market Introduction Service, you may be contacted by OMB research and
asked to take part in the survey. Participation in the surveys is voluntary, but
as this evidence is so important to informing UKTI policy development, we
very much hope you will be able to take part.
