W
hen Al Gore was awarded the
Nobel Peace Prize last month,
he didn’t forget to thank a
Mountain View design firm for its help
in developing the famous slide show that
carries his message.
Duarte Design, headquartered on E.
Evelyn Avenue, played an instrumental role
in creating the former vice president’s slide
show, popularized in the Oscar-winning
documentary “An Inconvenient Truth.”
According to Jill Martin, Duarte’s account
manager, Gore came to the company four
years ago with a stack of slides and a pile of
scientific research papers. He had been ask-
ing around for help with his presentation
when a client of the firm referred Gore to
the Mountain View company.
Since then, Gore’s show has gone from
a 150-slide presentation on an antiquated
projector to a fully digitized and animated
400-slide presentation. Using a variation
of Keynote, Adobe After Effects and Photoshop Illustrator, a team of five Duarte
designers helped modernize Gore’s message. Now he jets around the world with the
presentation on his laptop, Martin said.

graphics in the documentary film, according to Nancy Duarte, who co-founded the
company with her husband Mark, Gore
still calls to ask the firm to do more work
for him — for example, updating slides as
he adds new information based on current
events, new scientific evidence or reaction
from his audiences.
Just a few days ago, senior designer Ryan
Orcutt pulled dozens of pictures from the
Southern California wildfires in anticipation of Gore using them in future talks. The
company is also in the process of translating the slide show into Bengali, Hindi,
Tamil, Telegu and Gujarati for Gore’s
upcoming visit to India, Orcutt said.
Orcutt had the opportunity to work
one-on-one with Gore and traveled with
him to Chicago for a presentation on the
Oprah Winfrey show.
“You come in as someone who doesn’t
have a lot of knowledge about climate
change and you’ve got probably the best
presentation in the world in front of you
about climate change,” Orcutt said. “So
you’re learning about things that you
never thought were related.”
Besides educational, working with
Gore was enjoyable, Orcutt said. “He’s a
great guy, funny in person. He’s got a very
commanding presence.”
While Gore is one of the firm’s more
famous clients, Duarte Design does work
for a number of high-profile clients such
as Hewlett Packard and Cisco, as well as

VERISIGN SHOWS HOW A COMPANY CAN LEVERAGE
EXPERTISE, ACQUISITIONS AND TRENDS

built its business by marketing trust.
It does this

encryption technology, which
helps consumers
trust online merchants, media
companies sell authentic entertainment and communications
companies transmit reliable
information.
VeriSign is a stunning example
of how a technology company
can morph into a significant corporation by leveraging expertise,
acquisitions and trends. It began,
12 years ago, by selling digital
certificates for Web sites as a
spin-off from RSA Security. Now
its certificates protect more than
750,000 secure Web sites, including 93 percent of the Fortune
500. Last week, the Computer
History Museum celebrated the
30th anniversary of the publicprivate key encryption technology, created by MIT researchers
Ronald Rivest, Adi Shamir, and
Leonard Adleman, that led to the
founding of RSA.
Today, when you visit a domain
name on the Web, chances are
VeriSign is helping you route
your request. It may resolve 31
billion domain name requests
in a day. It has recently upgraded
its systems to handle 2 trillion
requests a day and will double
that capacity in the future.
The growth of cell phones on
the Internet will create unprecedented demands on routing
messages reliably and securely.
Last week, at the cell phone
industry’s CTIA Wireless IT
and Entertainment show, in San
Francisco, VeriSign won Streaming Media magazine’s prize for
the best content management
platform for digital media.
That technology came from
VeriSign’s acquisition of Kontiki. You can use it on Palo
Alto’s Open Media Network. To
see videos and TV programs,
some free, some paid, go to
www.omn.org and download
a viewer. It works on most PCs
(a Vista version is not available
despite a support forum saying
it would be out by late summer) and Macs. If you are in the
U.K., you can also view the BBC
and Channel 4 on a PC using
VeriSign’s technology. Unfortunately, access is blocked for
overseas viewers.
Another VeriSign project was
supporting the Live Earth concerts with text messaging. The
audience could send a text message saying they would switch
off lights, car pool, buy fluorescent light bulbs, promote Live
Earth or pledge support. VeriSign supported 65 mobile phone
operators across four continents
for the event alone.
Every day, VeriSign carries 200
million text messages between
operators that originate on
mobile phones. This seems a
huge number until you realize
that, according to the CTIA, in
June 2007 nearly 1 billion messages were sent per day in the
U.S. alone.
VeriSign is pushing to display
content on three screens: TV,
computer and mobile phone.

need to support a fourth screen,
the Apple iPhone, which cannot play Flash or execute Java.

Not to be outdone by Facebook’s rapidly escalating popularity, fueled by Microsoft’s $240

has a deal with VeriSign to bring
social media to mobile devices.

FEELING A BIT WOBBLY?
If your front-wheel-drive vehicle feels a bit wobbly on
the road, it may involve the driveline (which is composed
of the components that transfer power to the wheels). For
instance, an axle joint failure can lead the spinning shaft to
slip slightly and run out of center. This condition will be felt
as a side-to-side wobble at lower speeds and a vibration
at highway speeds. If a driveline wobble occurs on a rearwheel-drive vehicle, the most likely culprit is a bent axle
(which may be damaged in an accident or a hard run-in
with a curb). More likely, however, a wobble in rear-wheeldrive and four-wheel-drive vehicles will develop in the
drive shaft, usually as a result of universal joint problems.

Looking at the last 40 years of real estate in California, we have
seen very few times in which real estate values have dropped.
In fact, according to the California Association of Realtors, since
1970 the real estate market in California has only dropped seven
times, six times under 3.7% and only once at 4.5%. On the
contrary, our market has seen remarkable growth. In 1970, the
median cost of a single-family home in California was $26,000.
Today, 37 years later, homes have seen a 2,165% increase, now
selling for $588,970.
Historically, Santa Clara County Has Enjoyed Even Stronger
Success
Is Now the Time to Buy?
Now may be the time to buy: mortgage rates remain low (certainly
by historical standards), prices have stabilized and there is a large
selection of homes to choose from.
According to the California Association of Realtors, in 1989 the
median price of a single-family home in Santa Clara County was
$246,847. Today, just 18 years later, that same single family
home is selling for $860,000 - a 248% increase.
Certainly it makes a more exciting news story for journalists to
dwell on the negative, but for smart consumers it is definitely
more economically advantageous to seize opportunities as they
present themselves. And this market may offer some tremendous
opportunities.
Certainly in recent months we have seen a shift from a seller's
market to a buyer's market but that switch was necessary to
continue a healthy flow of exchange amongst buyers and sellers.
While no one can predict the future, if history is any indication,
then real estate over the long run will continue to be a solid
investment.
The bottom line is that our economy couldn't maintain the double
digit increases we saw in home prices in 2003 and 2004 without
seeing a shift. If we continued to see an upstream of that
magnitude we would nearly eliminate the first-time home buyers
which could potentially drastically hinder our economy. Shifts
in our market are what keep our economy running smoothly.
And that's good news for everyone - buyers, sellers and the real
estate industry.
