hristmas 2010 was pretty much a disaster
for the premium-cigar business—and I guess
every other luxury business as well. Between
the uncertainty of the stock market and
millions of people losing their jobs (and some even their
homes), everybody was cutting back. So, even though
these handsome embossed tins of 10 cigars were a super
gift item, they—like everything else—failed to achieve
the level of sales that was anticipated when they were first
commissioned to be made over a year before.
J•R has taken a risk and bought every one of these
tins that Altadis (the world’s largest manufacturer of
premium handmade cigars) had left within its inventory.
And… we bought them all at a price that was reasonable
enough to allow us to offer them to our customers at
prices we haven’t seen in over 20 years. However, there’s
just one little-bitty problem that we have to deal with, and
that’s the fact that these are contract brands (brands that
we are not permitted to sell for below a fixed minimum
price). So, with each tin of 10 sold at the lowest price
that we are contractually allowed to sell them at, we’re
throwing in a full box of 24 El Rey del Mundo Café au
Lait cigars—a $54.00 value all by itself!
Let me tell you a little bit about the El Rey del Mundo
Café au Lait, because many of you may not be aware of
the history behind these 4.50 x 35 little coronas. Fact
number one is that the Café au Lait is one of the very,
very few cigars of this size that is handmade. Fact number
two is that it is, by far and away, the singularly largestselling cigar of this size on this or any other planet! There
isn’t another cigar of any size (handmade or machine
made) that calls for J•R to stock at least 10,000 boxes at
all times just to make 100 percent sure that we never run
out. It’s a monster seller and I cannot even begin to guess
how many customers add a box of Café au Lait to almost
every order just because they are the perfect short smoke
(maybe 20 minutes); they deliver all of the flavor of a
full-size cigar in a product that is reasonably priced and
definitely well made. In fact, as soon as I finish writing
about them, I’ll be on the phone ordering an additional
10,000 boxes to cover this massive tin sale.
So, the bottom line here is that you’ll be buying these
tins of 10 at our regular discounted J•R price and getting
a box of 24 El Rey del Mundo Café au Lait cigars FREE
with every tin. And, in the future, I’d bet dollars to
doughnuts that you, like so many other J•R customers,
will start adding Café au Laits to most of your future
orders.

Put That in Your Pipe and Smoke It!

man who smokes, thinks like a philosopher and
acts like a Samaritan.

My father was never inspired by that line. Though he
spent most of his adult life with a pipe in his mouth, it was
not a philosopher or a Samaritan who lounged bare-chested
in a La-Z-Boy, clad in a fetching shorts-and-black-socks
ensemble. Still, this man was my inspiration to take up the
fine art of pipe smoking. That pipe seemed to affect my dad
in the same way that music soothes the proverbial savage
beast (as a certain rascally rabbit used to say).
Once satisfied that I did not have to be an ascot-donning
tight-ass to enjoy a pipe, I decided to try it out. And why
not? Already a cigar smoker, I also had some experience with
a pipe—a yellow plastic one that blew bubbles (which I gave
up after college).
At first, I was more comfortable with a cigar in public
than I was with a pipe. I enjoyed both but felt self-conscious

with a pipe; despite those memories of Dad, my mind
continued to conjure the exact opposite (yet equally horrific)
image: pompous jerks in tweed jackets with elbow patches!
As time passed, I stopped caring what anybody thought.
But I think the stuffy stereotype of the pipe smoker, along
with the great effort required to learn this hobby, has kept
younger generations from embracing the pipe as they have
the cigar. After all, that bad-boy, fat-cat image of the cigar
smoker is alluring. Think about it—Tony lighting up his
smoke to that funky theme song on The Sopranos is far
more appealing than, say, Ward Cleaver stoically puffing a
pipe as he firmly, but kindly, scolds the Beaver. Makes you
wonder… throughout history, was it only dull people who
smoked pipes? Or, did pipe smoking make people dull?
I say, dismiss the stereotypes and understand that pipe
smoking is for anyone who wants to enjoy a vast selection
of tobacco flavors! The assortment of blends from various
regions around the world is staggering. You could smoke a
pipe every day for 20 years without trying every blend, each
of which offers its own unique flavor.
Presumably you are, like me, a devoted cigar smoker.
Maybe you tried a pipe once and became discouraged that
your (perhaps hastily selected) new pipe and tobacco burned
both your tongue and your hand. But with the help of a
tobacconist, you can learn how to turn this endeavor into a
real hobby. Have patience; unlike a cigar, a pipe cannot just
be cut, lit, and smoked: you have to work a little, so let’s get
prepared.
Tools of the Trade
Now, you probably didn’t get much sleep last night
knowing that today is pipe day—or perhaps that was because
of the liverwurst sandwich you enjoyed right before bedtime.
Anyway, you’ll need a pipe (obviously), a lighter (matches
will do), and a tamper. You definitely do not need tap shoes,
a clown nose, or an accordion.
Step One: Picking Out Tobacco
In terms of flavor, remember that quality and aroma are
two different things. After sniffing a bag of off-brand BerryCherry Supreme from your local drugstore’s bin of damaged
items, you purchase it. Why not? It’s only two dollars for
16 ounces! And because it smells sort of, somewhat, maybe a
little bit similar to the private-label cherry blend sold by your
tobacconist, it must be the same, right?
Wrong! After a few puffs, your tongue becomes raw and
the pipe is too hot to handle. You just smoked inferior tobacco
loaded with chemical additives. Yes, sometimes the snooty

assertion that off-the-rack “drugstore” tobaccos are inferior
to those sold by legitimate tobacco purveyors actually is true;
it’s not always a folktale created by pipe connoisseurs to allow
only the elite into their club! Many cheapo brands contain
leftover scraps that are drowned in casing to disguise a flavor
that is questionable at best. Now, do not take these words to
mean that no drugstore tobacco is worth it; in fact, there are
quite a few out there that will not only more than satisfy, but
also save you some dough. It’s just that, if you’re plucking it
from a rack that also displays 99¢ eight-track tapes, or out of
a barrel that may or may not once have held garbage… well,
you probably won’t discover the most relaxing smoke of your
life. Still, how do you choose?
Simple: Ask a tobacco professional—it’s his or her job,
right? Now, help out by at least knowing the flavors or aromas
you like and dislike (sweet, pungent, smoky, etc.). Mention
your favorite cigars (note: many cigar smokers prefer a wellaged Virginia or English blend). And be sure to reveal that
you are a beginner to the pipe.
Now, lets talk about the cut. Because ready-rubbed,
ribbon-cut, or cube-cut tobaccos are extremely easy to pack,
you might want to start with them. In fact, many new pipe
smokers avoid the plug, cake, and flake tobaccos that need to
be rubbed out before the pipe can be packed.
However, if you want to dive right into the intricacies
of this hobby, then go ahead—try the flake styles. Flake
tobaccos are packaged in slices resembling beef jerky and are
aged under pressure in “cakes” to draw out extra flavor and
sweetness. While this format can be daunting to a neophyte,
I highly recommend them to cigar smokers who are
accustomed to a thick, dense smoking experience. Just pinch
off a piece and rub it between your thumb and forefinger,
separating it to create a lump-free consistency.
Flake tobaccos retain more moisture and freshness than
ribbon-cut styles, giving the smoker better control over
the burning rate. For example: You’re taking Poochie out
for his nightly walk, and it’s cold and windy! Just rub off
a thicker chunk for a slower burn that is more resistant to
the elements. But if you are, instead, sitting at home by the
fireplace (with Poochie obediently at your feet), wearing your
favorite cardigan (no ascot needed!), and reading the leatherbound works of Dickens (or, in my father’s case, plaid shorts
while watching Gunsmoke), just rub the slices into much
thinner pieces, as they will burn slower when not exposed
to the harsh conditions of Poochie’s nightly constitutional.
Now that you’ve made your choice of flavor and cut, be
sure that your tobacco is moist but not out-and-out wet. Your
tobacconist can show you the correct degree of moisture.

Now, remember that tamper and lighter (or matches)?
Go get ’em—it’s packing and lighting time!
Step Two: Packing
Sprinkle your tobacco into the pipe’s bowl until it is full.
Do not cram it in or mash it down with your thumb! Gently
use your tamper to flatten the tobacco until it’s at the bowl’s
halfway mark.
Sprinkle again, right up to the rim. Tamp again—
gently! —until the bowl is three quarters full.
Sprinkle (yes, again), this time forming a small, rounded
mound just above the rim.
Step Three: Lighting
Okay, this part tries the patience of many a novice, so get
yourself calm and centered.
Now, with a match or a lighter, toast the entire mound of
tobacco, while taking a few good puffs—sometimes as many
as five or six. When the entire surface is lit, gently tamp again
to create an even surface, remembering that, if you pack
tobacco too firmly, it will not burn well and you’ll likely pop
your eardrums trying to inhale. Understand?
Relight while taking a few more puffs. And… you did it!
Yes, it probably took some time. But the fact is, no matter
how well a pipe is packed, it is difficult to keep lit. Always
carry your lighter or lots of matches.
Step Four: Enjoy!
Just relax… but watch your ash; an improperly lit bowl
can emit a spark that lands on your crotch, which is never
good—especially while driving. Imagine it, you’re forced
to keep only one eye on the road… while tending to your
smoldering genitals… and trying desperately to avoid
careening to a fiery death… (Not that this has ever happened
to me, of course.)
Anyway, don’t let a fear of the unknown keep you from
expanding your enjoyment of tobacco. The moral of the story
is that, once I got over my misconceptions of the hobby,
smoking a pipe taught me some great lessons in patience
and perseverance. The same goes for you: If your first couple
of bowls are not enjoyable, just try another blend. If the
tobacco you chose is too strong, go for something milder,
or vice versa. Too sweet? Try something less aromatic. It’s
really just common sense. Experiment and take notes on the
blends for future reference, rely on your trusty tobacconist’s
suggestions, and, if that doesn’t work… clearly you are far
too picky—just buy some Lucky Strikes and a bottle of
Scotch and go watch a dirty movie.
