Design your own sofa
When choosing a sofa, the final decision is very often about details.
It is all very well having standard dimensions for standard designs
but all of us are non-standard in some way or other.
At The Handmade Sofa Company, we can use a standard design and
modify it to suit your specific needs. If you are taller than average,
we can add a little depth to the seat or height to the back. You
might prefer your sofa to have a wider arm at a lower position, or
maybe a wooden leg instead of metal – for the Handmade Sofa
Company such changes come as standard.
Such flexibility also allows us to go beyond simple modifications.
For those who just cannot find what they are looking for we will
carefully guide you through the process of building a bespoke sofa
from scratch. Using photographs, your own sketches or even just a
mental picture of what you want, our experienced staff can help you
with free advice and quotes to design exactly the sofa or chair that
you are looking for. Whether you prefer to visit us at our showroom,
communicate by email or over the phone, we are on hand to give
you a unique and personal service.
Most of our range can be made as a sofabed
Wherever possible we use high quality two-fold bed mechanisms
which include a sprung mattress. Due to their unique frame
construction we are only able to accommodate three-fold
mechanisms in our Chesterfield models. Due to the flexibility
required these mechanisms necessitate a foam mattress.
There are a few considerations to bear
in mind when selecting a model as a
sofabed:
Legs/feet To avoid the bed mechanism being
visible on the underside of the sofa, furniture
models with shorter legs are recommended. A
model with taller legs can be used but the
front border below the seat requires
modification to utilise a shorter leg.
We don’t recommend the use of casters due
to the considerable extra weight a bed
mechanism adds to the sofa.
Sprung/buttoned seats cannot
accommodate a bed mechanism.
Chaise longues/Chaise sofas are
unsuitable as sofabeds.

We have always believed that buying a sofa should be all about
choice and not compromise. That is why every aspect of our sofas
and chairs – whether it is the design, covering, dimensions, cushion
filling or even the stitching – can be modified.
Many sofas can be
supplied with ‘split’
frames for the most
restricted access –
please ask for details.
Standard cushion fillings are foam or soft hollowfill
fibre. We can also supply a variety of alternative
fillings including feather, foam/fibre mix. You can
also decide on the number of cushions you require.
Back cushion height
and shape can be
adjusted to order.
The frame width and depth can be increased or
reduced according to your needs.
Arm widths and heights can be
increased or reduced to order. You
can also choose alternative arms to
go with our standard sofas. Many
models are supplied with bolted-on
arms to assist with any potential
access problems either now or for
the future.
A wide variety of feet are available.
We can also stain wooden legs to
order should you wish to match
them with existing furniture.
All furniture is available in any leather or fabric of your

The sofas
As our name suggests, every piece of our furniture is hand built to
order using the finest high quality materials. All furniture is made in
the UK ensuring the best of classic and contemporary design with a
robust construction and quick delivery – usually about 4-6 weeks
but sometimes less.
Fabric furniture We can supply all of our sofas and chairs using
fabrics from the UK’s leading suppliers and designers (see page 48).
From natural linens to sumptuous velvets we will help you find the
perfect fabric for your sofa.
Leather furniture Using one of the most extensive collections of
leather in the UK we are bound to have what you want.
• From luxurious aniline full grains to the most practical corrected
grains you will be amazed at just how much choice you have in
every colour and hue you can imagine.
• You are guaranteed that any sofa, chair or group of furniture you
order will be covered in genuine leather selected from the same
batch of hides, ensuring continuity of tone and thickness.
• By carefully selecting our leather we manage to cut down on
unnecessary stitching which produces furniture which not only
looks superior but also has maximum durability.

Chaise longues
The origins of the chaise longue – or chaise lounge as they are
increasingly referred to – are not entirely clear. Most people have the
image of decadent Romans reclining on a type of chaise longue
while being fed grapes by scantily-clad slaves!
However our more typical image is of the classic French style which
first appeared in16th-century France. After a century or two, more
ornate designs appeared and they became status symbols made of
expensive, beautifully carved wood covered in luxurious fabrics.
Our ‘Regency’ range of chaise longues is influenced by this classic
French style while the contemporary ‘Mode’ range represents an upto-date twist for more modern living.
All of our chaises can be made with right- or left-handed arms or
without backs as well as made-to-measure. We can also supply them
using a wide variety of legs/feet in different finishes – please see
page 31 for these options.

It first appeared towards the end of Queen Victoria’s reign and since
then the Chesterfield style has come to represent quintessential
English style. From traditional smoke-filled gentlemen’s clubs to Big
Brother, the Chesterfield has become as stylish as it is timeless.
Our range of Chesterfield furniture is made using robust modern
components and can be tailored to whatever style you require. All
styles are supplied in traditional antique ‘rub-off’ Chesterfield leather
as standard. There is a huge variety of colours to choose from in our
Chesterfield leathers which encompass a spectrum from deep reds,
dark greens, classic tans to blues and rusts. Non-standard variations
include distressed grains in various colours or more contemporary
leathers for a fresher take on this design classic.
All models are available with or without buttoning. The number of seat
cushions is also ‘variable’ and you can also choose from a plain or
buttoned fixed seat. We can also replace studs with piping if required.
If you would like to include a sofabed please ask for details.
A leather finish may be the obvious option, but our Chesterfields can
be covered in almost any fabric you care to choose. Why not consider
a sumptuous velvet, a rich chenille or let your imagination go wild?
We will send you samples of any fabric you want.

Corner sofas
Whether you want to make the most of your seating space or
simply stretch out in unrestricted comfort, a corner sofa or corner
chaise is the perfect answer.
The Handmade Sofa Company can supply a wide range of
standard and made-to-measure sizes using almost all of our
designs. Be it for a straightforward corner area in the living room
or a ‘U’ shaped arrangement in your home cinema, we can supply
a corner sofa to suit your specific requirements – finished in your
choice of leather or fabric.
Standard dimensions for each possible section of your corner
combination can be found on page 47. These are based on the
Huxley range so please bear in mind that dimensions will vary
slightly according to the size of arm on the style you choose.

Paying for your furniture
We require a 50% non-refundable deposit at the time you place your
order. We will inform you when your order is ready to be shipped,
with any outstanding balance agreed before delivery.
We accept the following methods of payment: BACS;
Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, Visa Electron and Solo cards.
We also accept £ sterling cheques made payable to The Handmade
Sofa Company. Please allow four working days for clearance.
Please note that credit card payment attracts a 2.5% surcharge.
Conversion chart
We use the Width measurement first for the longest part of the
item, for instance, the outside edge of the left arm to the outside
edge of the right arm of a sofa or chair, followed by the Height to
the top of the back cushions; finally, the Depth, being the
measurement from the front edge to the back edge.

Delivery
We can deliver in 4-6 weeks, sometimes less.
We will call or email you, usually a week or so beforehand, to
arrange a convenient date and time for delivery.
Please bear in mind that it is ultimately your responsibility to check
that the furniture you have ordered fits through your home or work
entrance and any stairways or hallways. Should you have any
concerns regarding access to the delivery address please let us know
when ordering and we can plan accordingly.
Unfortunately our carriers may not be able to assist you should the
initial access point be above ground level. Our carriers are only
contracted to deliver to your door. If you require delivery into your
residence it is at your own risk.
Please note that many models can include bolted-on arms for easier
access. A charge of approximately £30.00 per item is payable should
it be necessary to disassemble/reassemble these to gain access.
We would appreciate any assistance in terms of local information
which may affect ease of delivery. Such information might include
awkward access, low bridges etc. We also recommend preparing the
access point by removing any potential obstructions and small items
such as ornaments, rugs, mirrors and pictures.
The carrier will remove all packaging to allow you to inspect the
furniture for any damage or deficiencies and you will be required to
sign a receipt as proof of delivery and acceptance of goods received.
Although improbable, should there be any damage to the furniture,
we will either take back the goods or arrange for an on-site repair
free of charge.
Please note that The Handmade Sofa Company cannot accept any
responsibility for lost working time in the unlikely event of a delivery
being incorrect, delayed or postponed.
