It is rare that a genuine gap in a market emerges, but today the gap in the
food magazine market is — for those with a full bookcase of books about
food, but not one magazine subscription — startlingly evident.
The past decade has seen a new convergence between popular interest in
cookery and nutrition, and awareness of ethical and ecological issues. Both
movements are clearly reflected in soaring book sales, media headlines,
proliferating farmers’ markets and food festivals, and unprecedented
popular campaigns (for example, ordinary people marching in central
London over fish stocks sustainability).
The Taster is the first publication to cater for this mainstream shift.
A cheap, friendly, entertaining magazine, it combines a handmade,
grass-roots feel with a strong ethical stance and a feel for the popular.
Gloss-free and interesting, with a fresh element of humour, it contains
informative articles, quirky opinion pieces, cartoons and ‘visuals’ (pages
combining information and images in unique ways). It is designed to appeal
to the new audience of amateur gastronomes, cooks and those who enjoy
reading about food (even if they do not cook very often). Its ethical
stance is not overt but is implicit on every page by its choice of content.
Placing an advert in The Taster is more than just placing an advert. It is
buying into the new food markets, while incidentally doing some good.
Take part in the new ethical food world.
