In a study of 17 customers with 270k members, the CAI was used to determine if individuals make an optimal clinical, financial or service choice when faced with a health care decision. The CAI navigates individuals through 51 decision points to complete its assessment. By better understanding consumer behavior, members can then seek to modify behavior to achieve better health. OptumHealth partnered with Tufts Medical Center and 19 national employers to create a work-focused intervention aimed at improving the productivity of middle- aged and older adults with depression and work limitations. The program utilized telephone-based counseling with care coordination, cognitive behavioral therapy strategy development, and work coaching/modification. Crystal Room Lobby Level Approximately 50,000 adults die each year in the US from vaccine-preventable diseases such as influenza and pneumonia. To confront this problem, Pfizer collaborated with the University of South Florida (USFHealth) and Tampa General Hospital to review the use of vaccines as a method of improving workforce health. The first step in this collaboration was to model the direct and indirect benefit costs associated with Community Acquired Pneumonia (CAP). This session will reveal the economic burden of CAP and the advantages of partnerships to deter CAP incidents. Presenters will discuss the health system’s direct and indirect benefit costs associated with CAP and annual cost estimates for the organization’s health, sick leave/absence, short-term disability (STD), and group life insurance benefit programs. Speakers will then explore how the expansion of employee coverage for vaccines in partnership with pharmacy networks worked to improve the overall health and productivity of affected workforces. 2:45pm – 3:45pm Workshop C: Health and Productivity Management Guided by a Workforce’s Professional, Social, and Emotional Wellbeing • Jim Purvis, VP, Well-Being Improvement Design, Healthways • Elizabeth Glenn-Bottari, Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, Integrative Health, St. Joseph Health Healthways partnered with St. Joseph’s Health to better understand and improve employee well-being. Speakers will discuss a program to address high claims costs and instances of absenteeism and presenteeism. Healthways leveraged St. Joseph Health’s Choose Well brand and developed custom campaigns for each ministry to maximize employee engagement and participation in the Healthways Well-Being Assessment. This survey measured more than just the physical health of employees, it also identified the impact that work environment and social, emotional and community well-being had on their overall well-being as well. This session will focus on a recent study by a major self-insured employer to cultivate evidence on issues key to a successful program focusing on illness/ injury prevention, reduction of workers’ compensation claims, and disability and healthcare cost savings. This study longitudinally tracked episodes of three types of ICD-9 diagnosis code-identified back problems from 2001-2009 and found that care consistent with 10 of 11 guidelines was associated with lower total costs. Speakers will review how approaches marked by more intensive resource use and lower guideline consistency were linked to poorer LBP quality care, worse patient/employee outcomes, and greater direct and indirect costs. She has conducted research on the dissemination of practice guidelines for the treatment of depression within managed behavioral healthcare, particularly on workplace depression, telephonic care management and outreach to depressed chronically-ill medical patients, development of patient-reported outcome measures and impact of provider feedback reports, development of evidence-based psychotherapy measures, and impact of clinical interventions on service utilization and costs. With 15 years of experience in absence management, Deborah is an expert in call center environments with a high incidence of leaves and disability. Thomas Parry, Ph.D. Integrated Benefits Institute President Dr. Thomas Parry directs IBI’s activities and stewards its research agenda. Before cofounding IBI, he served 11 years as Research Director at the California Workers’ Compensation Institute. His research at CWCI encompassed a wide variety of topics in workers’ compensation, including medical treatment patterns, vocational rehabilitation costs and effectiveness, legal costs and trends, medical utilization, mental stress claims, and physical therapy patterns of care. While at CWCI, Parry was engaged in some of the earliest research and analysis on 24-hour coverage and integrated benefits. Parry speaks on integrated benefits and health and productivity issues at conferences and symposia in the United States and internationally. He served for five years as research advisor to the Roadway Express Inc. Medical Board. Parry received his bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, Berkeley. Jim Purvis Healthways VP, Well-Being Improvement Design Jim Purvis joined Healthways in January 2007 and currently oversees the Healthways Well-Being Improvement design team where he coordinates the advancement of innovations proven concept learnings into Healthways core offerings as well as leading the design teams for Healthways product suite. Most recently, Jim successfully led a new strategic initiative to design and bring to production the Healthways Financial Wellness Program, in conjunction with a strategic business partnership with Dave Ramsey and the Lampo Organization. Jane Ryan Mayo Foundation Return to Work Section Head Jane Ryan is Return to Work Section Head with over 25 years of experience in disability management with Mayo Clinic. She was instrumental in the development of return to work practices in the organization, a program that has received national awards for best practice. Previous to working with Mayo, Ms. Ryan had several years of related disability and psychiatric case management experience in vocational and medical fields, working as a Qualified Rehabilitation Consultant (QRC) in the private rehabilitation sector, program coordinator of a pain management program, nurse therapist in both inpatient chemical dependency and psychiatric programs, and counselor in a private marriage counseling practice. She is specifically interested in how we can implement interventions that promote self-determination by teaching self-regulated goal setting and problem solving skills across contexts (e.g., education, employment, health) to promote valued outcomes. Dr. Shogren has published over 65 articles in peer-reviewed journals and is the author or co-author of 5 books, and has received grant funding from several sources, public and private. After completing an Internal Medicine Residency and Infectious Disease Fellowship at the University of South Florida (USF) he joined the faculty at USF. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the Infectious Disease Society of America. In 1992, Dr. Sinnott was named to the James A. Cullison Endowed Professorship for his distinguished contributions to medical science. In 2012, Dr. Sinnott was selected as Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at the USF Morsani College of Medicine. Prior to this, he served as the Director of the Division of Infectious Disease and International Medicine from 19912012, and additionally, was Associate Dean of International Affairs for the Morsani College of Medicine from 20052012. During this time he built the ID faculty from 3 to 18 members and founded Medicine International. Dr. Sinnott has contributed to the ongoing evolution of medicine by serving on over 40 local, regional, and national health care committees, and publishing over 200 abstracts, articles and textbook chapters. Recently, he developed an app, MDstats to teach clinicians about medical statistics. Dr. Sinnott has been inducted into the Leon G. Smith Infectious Disease Institute Hall of Fame. Deb Snider Dr. Stalker joined Argonne National Laboratory in 2001 and became the director of medical programming there in 2005. A board certified internist and advocate for disease prevention, she was convinced that the Department of Energy (DOE) contractor mandated workplace occupational health clinics had immense potential both for impacting employee health and helping slow the increasing costs of medical benefits. In her role as the director, she started planning accordingly to expand the occupational health clinic services to include wellness and disability management services using the integrated human capital management concept as her model. Now in 2015, Argonne has a robust award winning Wellness program in addition to their occupational health clinic. The on-site physical therapy program alone demonstrated deferred costs of over 1 million dollars in its first year. Prior to her career at Argonne Dr. Stalker was a practicing internal medicine physician and clinical instructor at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. At both institutions she was also actively involved in managed care and executive steering committees. Dr. Stalker served four years as national chair for the DOE EFCOG Occupational Medicine Subgroup and currently is on the Board of Directors for NAWHC. She is a regular lecturer on safety, leadership, and preventive health care topics. Dr. Wehmeyer has directed externally funded projects totaling almost $30 million conducting research and model development activities and personnel and leadership preparation activities pertaining to the education and support of youth and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He is the author or co-author of over 300 peerreviewed journal articles or book chapters and has authored, co-authored, edited, or co-edited 32 books on disability and education related issues, including issues pertaining to selfdetermination, positive psychology and disability, transition to adulthood, the education and inclusion of students with severe disabilities, and technology use by people with cognitive disabilities. John White, M.D. Diagnos-Techs Chief Medical Advisor After receiving a BA degree from Fordham University, Dr. White earned his M.D., CM degree from McGill University. Following internship at Michigan, and 2 years’ service at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, he returned to McGill for surgical training, and then to Johns Hopkins for qualification in Pediatric Surgery. Following 10 years on staff at Johns Hopkins, he was Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics successively at Albany Medical College, Loma Linda, and Mercer Medical College.
