EGYP T history As intriguing as Paris, as historically significant as Rome, as exotic as Singapore, Istanbul’s complex traditions reflect 2,500 years of civilizations built upon past civilizations. Istanbul spans the cultures of both Europe and Asia and has been desired throughout history by everyone from the Persians to the Russian empire. It is one of the world’s great romantic cities. Istanbul combines the best of old and new, of east and west, to create a thriving, international metropolis which continues to be one of the world’s most popular ports. Centered around the Bosphorus, a constantly busy, bustling waterway flooded with ships and ferries, which provides the link between Europe and Asia, Istanbul is perfectly situated to bring visitors riches from around the world. Once home to the leaders of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires, today Istanbul is known as Turkey's cultural heart and the country’s fun and leisure capital. From ancient Roman aqueducts and beautiful mosaics to modern shops and restaurants, Istanbul offers interests for everyone at prices among the lowest in Europe. The first town was built on the site of Istanbul in 657 BC, when the famous oracle at Delphi instructed a man named Byzas to build a city there. Subsequently conquered by Alexander the Great and by the Romans, destroyed by an angry Roman emperor and re-built as New Rome, then re-named Constantinople, Istanbul’s political history has always been tumultuous. Unsuccessfully attacked by the armies of the Islamic and Bulgarian empires, and finally sacked by crusaders in 1204, Istanbul was reclaimed by the Byzantine Empire 50 years later. The Ottoman army of Sultan Mehmet II took the city in 1453, the city was re-named Istanbul and the classic mosque design was established. Ethnic nationalism ultimately splintered the old Ottoman Empire- Greece led the way in 1832, quickly followed by Bulgaria, Romania, the Arabs and Albania. Russia tried to gain sovereignty over the shaky empire’s population, leading to the Crimean War which pitted the Turks, supported by Britain and France, against the Russian power. The early 1900’s brought more uprisings, and British forces occupied Istanbul after Ottoman Empire opted to side with Germany in the first world war. The Turkish War of Independence brought about the modern Turkish republic in 1923. Ankara became the seat of this new country, and Istanbul briefly assumed a less prominent role in the nation’s development. Visitors to the city join the nearly 20% of the Turkish people who call Istanbul home. Whether walking the streets once used by Turkish sultans, admiring mosques and Greek Orthodox churches, or shopping for bargains on local wares in the Grand Bazaar and beautiful carpet in the guaranteed stores, all who enter this city fall under its wonderful and exotic spell. sights to visit while shopping a. Topkapi Palace Few regal residences anywhere on earth can rival the opulence of Topkapi Palace. From the 15th through the mid-19th centuries, the extensive complex of buildings situated on Seraglio Hill in Old Istanbul was the home of Turkish sultans and their Harem. Construction of the palace was complete in 1452 by Sultan Mehmet II. Over the next 400 years, succeeding sultans would add their own fanciful, grandiose architectural touches to the ever-expending palace. It now spreads over 4 mammoth courtyards and is large enough to accommodate 5,000 residents. b. the blue mosque This prominent mosque was built between 1603 and 1617 and is a triumph of harmony, proportion and elegance. The layout of the Blue Mosque is classic, Ottoman design and it is the only mosque in Turkey with six minarets. It is known to architects as one of the great marvels of the world and received its name because its interior gleams with a magnificent paneling of blue and white tiles. C. Hagia sophia museum Emperor Justinian had this structure built as yet another effort to restore the greatness of the Roman empire. It was complete in 537 AD and reigned as the greatest church in Christendom until the the conquest of Constantinopole in 1453. In that year, the Ottomans converted it into a mosque and then in 1932 it was converted again, into a museum. It is made of ivory from Asia, marble from Egypt and columns from the ruins of Ephesus. The dome was the world’s largest until the dome at St. Peter’s Basilica was built in Rome 1,000 years later. d. the hippodrome This ancient Roman stadium was the scene of countless political and military dramas and was the center of Byzantium’s life for 1,000 years and of Ottoman life for another 400. It was built in 198 AD and was once the focal point for city life including chariot races, circuses and public executions.
