Historically, an Oxford shoe was the only kind a man would wear with a suit in town but today’s Oxfords now sport styles and materials to suit both casual and formal occasions. The toe cap is customarily lined with narrow rows of perforations which allow the shoe to “breathe” while keeping out the moist fogs emanating from Oxford’s River Cherwell and its many academics. S turdy, strong, always sound, the Brogue has been the English Gentleman’s footwear of choice for a millennium and more. Originally French, the Carbatine, it was adopted in the British Isles as the more ruggedly Gaelic Brog in the 4th and 5th Centuries. Originally the line of holes – the ‘Broguing Row’ - running along the shoe’s upper curves and lines let water to escape as their owner trod the heather and the bogs of his Celtic estates. Now the holes are purely decorative, and the Brogue sits as well in City boardrooms as under the breakfast tables of country seats.
