Monk Shoe is a stylish shoe with no laces that is closed by a
buckle and strap that acts both as an ornament and a protection.
More properly called the Monk Strap Shoe, its origin is indeed found
amongst the monastic orders of the 11th century whose followers
found that simple sandals tended to come off while endlessly tilling
muddy fields or leaping hedgerows to get away from the local barons
or the Vikings. By securing the shoe to the foot with a buckle, a new,
fashionable and adjustable footgear was born. Today, the Monk Shoe
is regarded as the perfect bridging point between the formal and the
casual shoe. Hard-wearing, long-lasting, they are considered more
relaxed than an Oxford; but less everyday than an open Derby. Popular
in suede, the Monk’s Shoe stands proudly in a category of its own.

as refined and elegant as the Wholecut shoe. The
upper of a Wholecut shoe is shaped from a single
piece of unblemished leather with no stitching. Only
the most skilled craftsmen can make a shoe like this.
A single flaw or careless cut, and the shoe is useless.
Only the highest quality leather is supple enough and
strong enough for use. Decoration is used sparingly to
set off the artistry of the whole. A byword for luxury, a
well-made, well-turned Wholecut, such as those offered

xford shoes are defined by their
closed facing, the effect of which
is smart, elegant, neat and formal.
Historically, an Oxford shoe was the
only kind a man would wear with a
suit in town but today’s Oxfords now
sport styles and materials to suit both
casual and formal occasions. The toe
cap is customarily lined with narrow
rows of perforations which allow
the shoe to “breathe” while keeping
out the moist fogs emanating from
Oxford’s River Cherwell and its many
academics.
S
turdy, strong, always sound,
the Brogue has been the
English Gentleman’s footwear
of choice for a millennium and
more. Originally French, the
Carbatine, it was adopted in
the British Isles as the more
ruggedly Gaelic Brog in the 4th
and 5th Centuries. Originally
the line of holes – the ‘Broguing
Row’ - running along the
shoe’s upper curves and lines let
water to escape as their owner
trod the heather and the bogs
of his Celtic estates. Now the
holes are purely decorative,
and the Brogue sits as well in
City boardrooms as under the
breakfast tables of country seats.
Full Brogues feature a distinctive
perforated ‘W’ line (which gives
the Full Brogue its alternative
name of ‘Wingtip’).

lassically, the Half Brogue is the elder, more serious brother of the Full
Brogue and is worn “In Town" while Full Brogues are for “The County”.
The Half Brogue dispenses with the distinctive perforated ‘Wingtip’ in favour
of a definite toe cap. This is perforated and has its’ own serrated edge. As
such, the Half Brogue is considered the more formal shoe, a favourite of the
diplomat, the lawyer, the broker, the politician and the white collar criminal.

Put your crest, logo, other symbol or emblem on a pair of black, navy, green, wine, brown,
red or regal velvet slippers, and choose a black, red, blue or gold quilt lining.
Normally velvet, but we can for example put your clan, family or other crest on tartan or other fabrics.

Over the years we have been commissioned by a number of clubs, businesses, schools and regiments to make slippers with their crest or
emblem sewn on them. All the uppers are meticulously hand embroidered using a variety of wires and coloured threads while the soles and
heels are leather allowing the slippers to be worn both indoors and out.
Bear in mind that we have done hundreds of these already and might therefore have the artwork in place which means that orders for
single pairs may be acceptable. Please ring us for advice or help.

Shipton & Heneage is proud to offer luxury cashmere socks, scarves, jumpers and cardigans for ladies and
gentlemen.
Believe us, our cashmere is no ordinary cashmere, it is highest quality Scottish Cashmere; soft as a Scotch mist,
light as a Highland reel; and luxurious as an Edinburgh advocate’s chambers.
Our fashion-wear is made from only the grade A fibres of the Capra Hircus goat found in China and
Mongolia, and woven, treated and assembled in specialist Scottish mills. Grade A fibres are 15-16 microns in
diameter and 34-36 millimetres in length. Cheaper, shorter fibres are coarser and more prone to 'pilling'

here are simple rules to help your shoes last and to
keep them in good condition.
If they get wet, do not force them to dry: allow them to
dry naturally.
Polish them very regularly with a wax-based polish to keep
the leather supple.
Try not to wear them on consecutive days - they
accumulate moisture from feet.
