WALTER SCOTT ASKS...
ASHLEY TISDALE
Zoo is my favorite
new summer show.
Did James Wolk
get to work with
a lot of animals,
or are they mostly
computer effects?
—Jillian M., Baton Rogue, La.
A: There were a lot of real
animals on the set of Zoo
(Tuesday nights on CBS),
in which Wolk, 30, plays
a zoologist who notices
that animal behavior is...
changing. “The rats were
creepy, and we had bats,”
says the Michigan native.
But the birds were “the
creepiest—because they
fly and come in from
above. It freaked me out a
little bit.”
Her role as Sharpay Evans shot her to stardom in High School Musical in
2006. Now the New Jersey native, 30, stars in the new TBS sitcom Clipped,
airing Tuesday nights, and is an executive producer of the hit ABC Family
comedy Young & Hungry, which returns with new episodes Aug. 12.
Were you looking for a more adult role with
Clipped? “I was definitely looking for a comedy and
this was in my age range. It has a lot more adult
humor. Also, I just did an indie [film], Drive, She Said,
where I play a prostitute. So I am definitely playing
roles that are mature.”
Clipped is set in a barbershop. Do you have
funny hair stories? “One time when I was
doing a show and I wanted to have my bangs
cut, they cut them super short. It wasn’t cute
on me at all. I couldn’t hide or put a hat on. I
knew it was going to be on TV forever.”
Berry
Interesting
Halle Berry, 48, has
starred in X-Men and
Catwoman and won an
Oscar for her trip to the
Monster’s Ball. Now
she’s an astronaut on
the second season of
CBS’s summer series
Extant (Wednesday
nights). Here are five
more fun facts.
1. She was named after
the Halle Building in
Cleveland, Ohio, where
she was born.
Music has played a big role in your career.
Will you sing in Clipped? “I will sing in one
episode. There are times I miss doing music, but I
am focused on acting and producing now. My husband [Christopher French, leader of the L.A.-based
band Annie Automatic] is a musician. If I want to do it, I
can get it out of my system by writing songs with him.”
2. At Bedford
High School,
Berry was editor of the school
paper and
prom queen.
You began working at 10. Do you feel you
missed anything in your childhood? “No. I was
always in regular school and I worked in clothing
stores growing up. I didn’t ‘make it’ until I was 18,
so I had already graduated public school. I definitely
feel like I had the best of both worlds.”

Q: I’m a big fan of Jonathan Kellerman’s detective novels Motive,
Killer and Guilt. I know in real life Kellerman is a psychologist,
like his fictional character Alex Delaware. But I was wondering if Kellerman also has a koi pond, like Alex?
—Heidi S., Macon, Ga.
A: The New York Times bestselling author does indeed have
a koi pond. “Our fish range from two to three feet long, and
most have lived with us for years, some for as long as three decades,” says
Kellerman, 65. He won’t be releasing another Alex Delaware book until next
year. But Aug. 18, his new stand-alone novel, The Murderer’s Daughter, will
feature one of Dr. Delaware’s former students, Dr. Grace Blades.
3. She began her career on
the beauty pageant circuit,
winning Miss Teen All
American (1985) and Miss
Ohio USA (1986), and finishing second in the Miss
USA contest (1986) and
sixth in Miss World (1986).
4. In 2005, she became
the first actress to accept
in person a
Golden Raspberry Award
for Worst
Actress (for
Catwoman).
5. A dog person before she
played Catwoman, she
adopted a kitty from the
set that she named Playto.

Ask Marilyn
By Marilyn vos Savant
When I’m at a stadium on a hot
day, I use a hand-held folding
fan. My husband says this
makes you hotter because the
activity increases your body
temperature slightly. Is he
right?
—L.G., Portland, Ore.
If fanning yourself gives you
relief, you’re making yourself
cooler, not hotter. Otherwise,
you wouldn’t do it, would
you? (Or you’d stop when the
effort outweighs the gain.)
The physics is too varied to
give a thumbs up or thumbs
down to fanning oneself in
general. Factors include
the temperature, humidity,
wind speed, whether you’re
perspiring, what you’re
wearing, your age and more. So
in short, if it feels good to fan
yourself, just fan yourself!

olumnist George F. Will has said, “Baseball is a habit. The slowly rising crescendo of each
game, the rhythm of the long season—these are the essentials and they are remarkably
unchanged over nearly a century and a half. Of how many American institutions can that be
said?” He’s right. While fields have gotten fancier (thank you to Cincinnati’s Great American Ball
Park, site of the 2015 All-Star Game July 14, for its new nursing suite for moms) and some players
aren’t tucking their pants into their socks anymore, there’s still the same universal appreciation for
the crack of the bat against the ball, the enticing smell of hot dogs, the wobbly first pitches by presidents and celebrities, the iconic songs—and the thrill of bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth.
In fact, this weekend alone, over two million people in ballparks across America are cheering on
their teams, from the Salt Lake Bees vs. the El Paso Chihuahuas to the Tampa Bay Rays vs. the
New York Yankees. There’s so much to love about baseball in 2015; here’s just a slice. If this doesn’t
make you break into a rousing rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” we don’t know what
will.

BALLPARKS WE LOVE
The oldest stadium in the major
leagues, Boston’s Fenway Park, boasts
what might be the most famous wall in
sports, the Green Monster, known for its
throwback, hand-operated scoreboard.
The Miami Marlins debuted their shiny new stadium by the sea,
Marlins Park, in 2012, complete with twin 450-gallon saltwater
aquariums behind home plate and a pool behind the bullpen.
Old stadiums got new life (and an attendance boost) this year
when First Tennessee Park (Nashville, Tenn., Sounds), Joe
Becker Stadium ( Joplin, Mo., Blasters), and Monongalia
County Ballpark (Granville, W. Va., Black Bears), all of the
minor leagues, unveiled their new parks.
Could this be the most sold-out ballpark ever? Fifth Third Field,
home of the Dayton Dragons (a Class A farm team for the
Cincinnati Reds) started the season this year with a record 1,000
sellouts in a row (and counting).
With an official opening date of April 17, 1906, Centennial
Field in Burlington, Vt., may be the oldest pro park still in use.
It’s home to the Vermont Lake Monsters, the Class A affiliate of
the Oakland A’s.

THE FIRST PITCH
President William H. Taft, who
took the mound in 1910 for the
first toss at Griffith Stadium, the
home of the Washington Senators, is credited with the first
ceremonial pitch. Many other
notables have followed with a
mixed bag of styles and results.
In 2014, actor Jeff Bridges
rolled his first pitch like a
bowling ball in honor of “the
Dude,” his character from The
Big Lebowski.
Singer Mariah
Carey, tottering
to the mound
in high heels,
famously
bobbled her
first pitch
at a 2008
game in
Japan;
it was only
airborne for a few yards.
And, this April, New England
quarterback Tom Brady showed
us that even if you throw balls
for a living, the first pitch can
fluster a guy. His ceremonial
throw bounced in the dirt at
Fenway Park. (James Taylor
fared better.)
