START TO THE DAY AT FITZROY PRIMARY SCHOOL
This year we have been trialling a different start to the day to ensure that children are in class and
ready to start lessons at 9.00am. This has been very successful and really supported the school's
goal in having our students ready to start learning at 9.00am. We will be continuing with this
schedule this term.
Our New Start to the Day schedule is:
8.45am. Staff are outside on yard duty. Children should not arrive at school before this time.
8.50am. Staff on yard duty open doors on both George St and Napier St buildings. Children can
start heading into class between 8.50-9.00am. This time is used in
classrooms to do a quiet activity to help children get settled for the day.
9.00am. The school day starts. By 9.00am all children should be in class
settled. Class lessons start at 9.00am.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
W
elcome back to everyone. It is hard to believe it is already Term 2! I hope all families
had a safe, happy and relaxing holiday. Looking at the school diary we have another
busy term with lots of special learning opportunities and activities planned for the children in
each of our teaching levels.
I
t has been great to be able to visit classrooms this week and see our children engaged in a
wide range of stimulating, challenging and engaging learning activities. The term has really
started off with a bang with lots of extra-curricular activities also on for our students. This
week the students in Years 2/3V and Years 2/3/4K went to the Arts Centre to see a play called
"The 26 Storey Treehouse". The students came back saying it was lot of fun and very funny, I
can tell they really enjoyed it. Today our Year 5/6 students visited Collingwood College as part
of our Year 6-7 Transition Program.
N
ext week sees our School Camp running from Wednesday until Friday. It's great to hear
how excited the students are about camp and being away with their friends and
teachers. I would like to thank the staff who are attending the camp this year for giving up
time with their own families for the benefit of our students. Camps could not run without the
support of staff and for this I say a HUGE thankyou.
A
reminder to all families that Sam and myself are on yard duty from 8.45am each
morning before school and until 3.45pm each afternoon after school. Children should
not be dropped off or left unsupervised in the school yard before or after these times. We
appreciate your support in this supervision and safety of our children.
T
his week sees a couple of our teaching staff on Long Service Leave. Both Nick and Vicki
are enjoying an overseas trip at the moment and I hope that Vicki who is in Europe and
Nick who is in Hawaii are both having a fabulous time and enjoying some warm weather and
beautiful surrounds. This week we have had April filling in for Vicki and Thea taking on some
of Nick's roles. In other staffing news Esther Lintzeris will continue to be on extended leave.
We were very lucky to have Mark replacing Esther last term. Mark has been successful in
gaining a fulltime position at another school and therefore won't be continuing in that role. I
wish Mark all the best for the future and thank him for his excellent work with Year 4/5/6 EJ
last term. I am currently going through the process of sourcing a replacement and will keep
families of the students in Year 4/5/6 EJ informed.
D
uring the school holidays there were lots of things happening in our school! We moved
our administration area around and I moved office! The uniform shop is now in a
bigger space and it is much easier to see what is available. I am pleased to say that my new
office is in a much bigger space as well and this week I was able to meet with the Student
Advisory Group comfortably in my new space. Not quite set up totally yet but I am getting
there! There have also been new Display Boards installed in each classroom on Napier St
These will be displays for ipads and notebooks and allow teachers to integrate technology
throughout the curriculum. All great advancements for our school!
I am looking forward to the camp next week!
Have a great week
Warm Regards

SCHOOL NEWS
ATTENDANCE
The Student Advisory Group is a group of students that work with Julie on ways to improve our
school. This week we talked about the importance of regular attendance at school and being on time
and its relationship to good learning. The Student Advisory Group have come up with three slogans
that will help us all at Fitzroy Primary School remember how important regular attendance at school is.
Great attendance means great learning.
Every minute counts towards your educational future.
Being on time at school means being on time with your
learning.
CLASS ATTENDANCE GRAPHS: Term 1 Week 4
The winner of this week’s Attendance Award is 4/5/6J. Well done!

YEAR 3-6 CAMP
Final preparations are underway for our Years 3-6 camp which will be held NEXT WEEK from
Wednesday April 22nd to Friday April 24th. The students are very excited about the camp!
The camp this year will take place at 'Candlebark Farm' (http://www.candlebarkfarm.com.au)
near Healesville. The camp is a short distance from Healesville in a bush setting and will be
supervised by a combination of Fitzroy Primary School staff and Camp staff.
The students will participate in outdoor education activities led by trained instructors. The camp
offers outdoor activities such as a night trail, low ropes course and orienteering. They will also
participate in adventure activities including a flying fox, canoeing and the amazing 500m 'Super
Swooper' flying fox.
Students will also be visiting Healesville Sanctuary (http://www.zoo.org.au/healesville) on the
way to the camp.
We require all documentation to be finalised before students can attend the camp. We also require
all payments to be finalised before camp commences next week unless specific payment
arrangements have been arranged through the office.
At any one time there will be five FPS staff at the camp.
Staff attending the camp will be;
Full Time: Kristian, Thea and Ahmed
Part Time: Linda, Jamie, Sharief, Sam and Julie.
Here's to a great 2015 school camp!

NAPLAN
National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy
The National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) for Years 3 and 5 will be
held in May. NAPLAN tests assess student knowledge and skills in Writing, Reading Language
Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. The results of the tests provide
information for students, parents and teachers which can be used to improve student
achievement. Later in the year parents receive a personal NAPLAN report based on their child's
results.
NAPLAN will take place for students in Years 3 and 5 on:
Tuesday May 12th
Language Conventions
Writing
Wednesday May 13th
Reading
Thursday May 14th
Numeracy
Parents are encouraged to ensure children are well rested and well-nourished on test days, to
provide students with the opportunity to perform as well as possible. It should be noted by
parents that the NAPLAN tests are only one form of assessment. Throughout the year, students
undertake a multitude of teacher generated assessments, diagnostic and online assessments.
Essentially NAPLAN provides a snapshot of a student's performance on a particular day and
should be seen as only one form of assessment.
FITZROY MARKET
The Fitzroy Market is on tomorrow from 10.00am until 3.00pm.
Once again a huge thankyou to Emily (mother of Clancy and
Scarlett) for the enormous effort put into organising and
sourcing volunteers to run the Fitzroy Primary School BBQ at
the market. Thankyou also to all our volunteers.
