History of
the Silo
One of the icons of Hunt Village, part
of the original farmstead, is the longstanding silo. The barn, turned into the
Lodge, opened to our Membership in
1982. But, what to do with the silo?
When the 10-station sporting clays
course was built in 1989, it just came
naturally to use the silo as Station 1 for
shooting sports. The iconic picture of
the shooter welcomes all to Hunt Village
and Flint Oak.
Earlier this year, we updated the
sign for its third time. This “Update’s”
front cover shows the newly installed
sign in all its glory. The silo continues
to be an outstanding feature of Hunt
Village.

Something
To Shoot For
Want to learn something new, or improve on what you already know? Our
shooting sports department offers lessons year round. Whether you are an
individual visiting for the first time, or a
corporate member here with a hundred
co-workers, if you know of someone
who would enjoy some extra instruction,
let us know. We can teach individually
or in groups of up to three. We get beginners going safely and get them in the
field harvesting birds or knocking down
clays at the shooting stations. We can
also improve the skill of someone experienced. Bring your own gun or we can
set you up with our rental guns. Give us
a call and make a reservation today.

Ken Gibson took the trophy for largest

2014-2015
Deer Season
The 2014 deer season saw improved harvest numbers over previous
years here at Flint Oak. Out of the
bucks harvested, Ken Gibson took the
trophy for largest deer harvested during
archery season. Scott Navarro shot a
very nice ten point during firearms season. Additionally, David Walters and
Don Henry both took nice bucks. The
unusually warm weather during October and November did play havoc with
our hunters who came to hunt.
Our preserve department will continue to add additional food plots of
wheat, clover and turnips. We will feed
supplements high in proteins starting in
early April when it is needed the most
for antler growth. Our newly purchased
gravity feeders will arrive soon. We are
excited to see the results of improved
deer management practices on the
ranch.
The reservations for the 2015 deer
season have already began to fill up so
don’t wait until the last minute to book
yours as only a limited number of hunts
will be booked. We are offering a package deal of two (2) nights lodging and
three (3) days of hunting. Our members
will be able to harvest both a buck and
a doe provided they have the appropriate tags. Flint Oak will be posting Facebook photos from the trail cams in late
spring. Nonresidents will need to apply
on-line in April through the KDWP website selecting Unit 12.

Daily!!
You read the headline correctly, and
three times per year students from
Kansas State University’s Wildlife and
Outdoor Enterprise Management program (WOEM) do just this. Up to fifty
enrolled students attend the two weekend springtime hands-on courses
where they lear n Spor ting Clays,
5-Stand, FITASC, Gun Fitting, Trap,
Skeet and successful Tournament management. The courses, running from
daylight until after dark, have both
classroom and hands-on sessions.
Students shoot over 200 rounds of
shells and actually design and set up
their own Sporting Clays courses using
portable equipment, gaining real life experience while being taught by notable
professionals in the shooting sports industry and Flint Oak staff.
The third trip the WOEM students
make is in the fall where the Flint Oak
management team shows the future
outdoor degree graduates what the
day-to-day business at a busy hunting
operation looks like. These students
also have to secure a six-month internship in the Outdoor industry in the fall
semester of their senior year before
graduating with a BS and a minor in
Business.
As you may be aware, Flint Oak
hosts an annual scholarship fundraiser
for ingoing freshman enrolled in the
WOEM program. For over five years,
we have presented three $1,000.00
scholarships, helping students and parents alike with tuition costs. This event
held the last Saturday of March, is
where, on the Open European, seventyeight shooters try their eye and gun on
1500 hard flying pheasants. If you
would like more information on this program, please contact Dr. Thomas
Warner at KSU 785-532-1412.
PUPPIES &
DOGS
Hunting season at Flint Oak is underway; the dogs are getting more action than ever. The 2015 hunt season
looks to be another fun-filled, actionpacked one for our kennel. The pups,
now mature enough to begin training,
are showing more promise through
each stage of their training process.
When not being trained, the young dogs
enjoy playing in the play yard, burning
the lingering puppy energy before relaxing in the kennel after their daily treat
and resting up for another day of training. Now that last summer’s puppies
are in training we are looking at the future of the breeding program. There
should be enough puppies to train for
the next hunt season and a few for individual purchase. Flint Oak offers boarding and/or training at our kennel for
Members. Please contact the office for
more details.

From the
Preserve
By Brent
It’s here, warmer weather, greening
grass and a ton of things to do this summer ! No one likes to see hunting season come to an end, but I am excited to
get summer going. This is my first full
summer on the preserve and I can’t wait
to see what we can accomplish.
After our yearly burn, we will dive
right into turkey season as well as prepare for the 2015 fishing season.
Turkey hunts will be limited so get your
tags and schedule a hunt.
Maintenance on Flint Oak is an ongoing task that never seems to slow-up.
Between reeds, trees and the fastest
growing grass in Kansas, it keeps all of
us extremely busy through out the summer months.
So get yourself ready and head to
out Flint Oak to enjoy a summer of great
fishing and relaxing.
2014 FISHING SEASON
ONE OF THE BEST
The 2014 fishing season was one of
our best years of fishing with over one
hundred guided fishing excursions on
Indian Lake. Great times and fishing
were had by all who fished our West
Lake. Fishing West Lake is a great
value as our members can fish the entire lake for half a day without interruption from other anglers. From the size
of the Wipers, Bass and Blue cats
caught, we believe the 2015 season will
be hard to beat.
Due to a mild winter, the fish have
stayed active feeding on warmer days
causing them to grow year round. With
the new feeding strategies, we feel the
bite will be good for both morning and
afternoon trips. Flint Oak will also reduce the amount of smaller bass to
leave more baitfish available for the
Lunkers.
We hope to make a few of the new
staff on board into fishing guides so be
sure to give them a hard time when they
get the boat stuck on a log! Spring
spawning is not far away so book your
fishing trip early and lets set a hook!

FIVE HUNTERS IN ONE
Matt Arnold
Old is now New
Let us introduce you to Flint Oak’s
two newest managers, Matt Arnold and
Steve Herring. You are thinking “New?
They’re not new. They have been at
Flint Oak for years”, and you are correct, but they are now the newest managers at Flint Oak.
Matt Arnold has been at Flint Oak
since September 2010, and became
Shooting Clay Manager in July 2014.
He and Allyson have two boys, Lane, 5
and Colt, 2. Matt is also an avid sporting clays shooter, competing in many
Sporting Clay Tournaments and placing
well. He makes great use of his shooting skills when giving either individual
or group shooting lessons at Flint Oak.
Steve Herring, Kennel Manager, has
three children, Danika, 20, Daryan, 15,
and Dreytan, 11. Steve has worked in
the Dog Department as our head trainer
since July 2011. Promoted to Kennel
Manager in September 2014, he lives
on site at the Kennel house. Steve has
a great way with pointing dogs and has
a full plate this summer starting seventeen new pups. Many of these new
young prospects will be in the field
come fall.
A hunter is, at different times in his
life, really five different hunters, according to a field study by Dr. Bob Norton
and Dr. Bob Jackson of the University of
Wisconsin.
During the first stage of a hunter’s
evolution, he is a “Shooter”, measuring
satisfaction by how many times he pulls
the trigger.
The “Limiting-Out” stage finds the
developing hunter striving to harvest his
limit every time out; measuring success
by the quantity of legal game taken.
The next step is the “Trophy” stage.
By now, the hunter has developed his
skills and enough knowledge to take
pride in harvesting selectively, big bucks
or nothing but drake mallards or long
bearded turkeys, for instance.
During the “Method” period, technique becomes all-important, i.e. ducks
taken only when decoying to handmade
blocks. Equipment is essential; calls,
blinds, dogs, specific firearms. Only
taking deer after tracking or stalking,
drives or stump sitting aren’t quality
enough for the Method hunter, who
bags to hunt, rather than hunts to bag.
Finally, the hunter reaches the
“Sportsman” stage. He mellows out,
finding satisfaction in the measures of
the hunt. The Sportsman no longer
judges his worth or controls his world by
the taking of game. According to Norton and Jackson, few hunters reach the
Sportsman stage before they are forty
years old.
(Continued next column)
Well-trained dogs a combination of
good genetic selection and careful dedicated training
(Five Hunters in One cotinued)
Regardless of the hunting stage, the
true Upland Hunter knows that a welltrained bird dog rates up there with a favorite over and under or pair of “lucky”
socks. The Upland Hunter savors each
statuesque point; the dog holding
steady to wing and shot, then fetching
the harvested bird back to hand. Welltrained dogs do not magically happen;
they are a combination of good genetic
selection and careful dedicated training.
The dogs insure those magic moments
in the field, after they go on point, a
cackling rooster pheasant towers into
the crisp air or a covey of plump quail
flushes, their wings beating their unique
cadence. Flint Oak’s dog training staff
starts with the right genetics and builds
on them with training until the finished
dog is an asset to the hunt, a joy in the
field and as necessary as those lucky
socks!

Marchant Starr
My name is Marchant Starr and I am
from Cedar Bluff, Alabama. I grew up
on a farm that primarily was a commercial cow/calf operation, but we also
managed wildlife. The family farm was
transformed into a wildlife management
and hunting operation almost ten years
ago. My father is an avid outdoorsman
and I was introduced to outdoor recreation and wildlife management at a very
young age, I started hunting at the age
of seven.
I graduated from Darlington School
in Rome Georgia in May of 2013. When
I learned of the Wildlife and Outdoor Enterprise Management program at
Kansas State I knew that this program
was what I wanted.
My early involvement in my father’s
conservation efforts, being involved with
the family business and a passion for
the outdoors led me to realize how important conservation, wildlife habitat
management and outdoor recreation
are for future generation.

Noah Parsons
My name is Noah Parsons. I was
born and raised in Wichita, Kansas and
have two brothers. Our family time was
spent outdoors, instilling a great love
and respect for nature. In 2001, our
lives completely changed when my dad
unexpectedly passed away. Even then,
my amazing mom committed her life to
keeping my two brothers and I involved
with church, sports, musical instruments and exploring the world outside
our front door. It was in the woods that
I found meaning and could always
make sense out of life. I loved sports
but I was already hooked on the great
outdoors by age ten when my grandpa
introduced me to his incredible world of
hunting.
I was always active in school activities but when I wasn’t doing school activities, I was definitely hunting or
fishing. Hutchinson Community College, an economic decision, was my
first step in making my Kansas State
WOEM dream a reality. I spent two
years there getting my general classes
and then enrolled in K-State to finish my
education. I am fully committed to maximizing every opportunity I have to
learn, grow, participate and spread the
love of this great program and its ability
to touch and change lives for the better…as it did mine.

Shane Webb
Hi, my name is Shane Webb. I was
born in Fort Collins, Colorado; my family moved to Kansas when I was 4
years old. My parents are Jerry and
Lauren Webb and I have two sisters,
Shaylin and April. We live on the outskirts of Kensington, Kansas where I
formed my love for wildlife and their
habitat. For eight years, my family has
been a part of the local Quail Forever
chapter helping to preserve and protect
the natural habitat. Other family members and I support a local archery club
where I introduce youth to archery and
bow hunting.
Through high school, I was involved
in all aspects of the school, holding offices in many different classes and
clubs. I also participated in land, livestock and dairy judging, and participated in sports, in and out of school, for
as long as I can remember. Recently,
through the scholarship application
process, I was awarded the Kansas
State University Achievement Award in
recognition of my academic and leadership achievements.
Growing up in rural Kansas, agriculture has always been a large part of my
life. I am a twelve-year member of the
Busy Bees 4-H club in Kensington,
holding different offices. I have learned
a great deal through these clubs including feeding, nutrition, care and development of livestock.
“HANDS ON” HUNTER EDUCATION
Flint Oak, with the assistance of Roger Wells and Dan Lantow of Americus, KS
and our local conservation officer, Aaron Scheve, will conduct the 33th annual
Hunter Education course on August 8 and 9, 2015. The course consists of outdoor
“hands on” instruction that allows students to become more involved in the learning process. During these sessions, students will be taught hunter responsibility,
ethics, fair chase, history of firearms, firearms basics, ammunition, basic gun
safety, field safety, bow hunting, conservation and wildlife management, wildlife of
Kansas, outdoor emergencies, Kansas hunting regulations and boating safety for
hunters. The course will run all day on Saturday and half a day on Sunday. After
completing the session work, the students will be allowed to “PRACTICE” what
they have learned at Flint Oak’s 5-Star rated Sporting Clay Course on Sunday
afternoon.
The age requirement to become certified in hunter education is eleven (11)
years of age. The hunter safety course may be taken by those under the age of
eleven, on space available basis, but will be required to take the course again upon
reaching age eleven. There is no charge for the course and everyone is encouraged to take the course even if not required by law. Rooms are available for those
who would like to enjoy a weekend stay at Flint Oak and lunch will be provided for
a minimal fee to the attendees. As openings for this course are limited, please
call 620-658-4401 to reserve your spot today!
Remember, anyone born on or after July 1, 1957 must be certified by an approved hunter education course before they can hunt in Kansas with the exception
of anyone fifteen (15) years old and under may hunt without hunter education certification provided that they are under the direct supervision of an adult eighteen
(18) years of age or older who has completed a hunter education course. A onetime deferral of the Hunter Education requirements may be acquired by individuals sixteen (16) and older by purchasing an Apprentice hunting license. Holders
of Apprentice hunting licenses must hunt under the supervision of a licensed
hunter age eighteen (18) or older. Under Kansas Law, Hunter Education Certification issued by any state, Canadian Province and some foreign jurisdictions are
also deemed to meet the Hunter Education requirements.

Individual Memberships shall be
issued in the name of an individual or
in the name of a business or firm. Individual Memberships are assigned to
one (1) designated individual and are
non-transferable. The designee of an
Individual Membership will be responsible for any charges incurred by his
guests.
Corporate (Multiple designees)
Corporate Memberships shall be
issued either in the name of a company or an individual associate of a
professional group. A company is understood to be any entity holding a
Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN).
Such named entity
(whether a company or an individual
associate) shall be designated as the
Owner of the Membership, and the
rights and privileges of the Membership are the property of the named
Owner. The first Designee appointed
by the Owner of the Membership shall
be responsible for and billed for all
charges incurred by designees and
their guests.
Corporate Memberships include
membership rights and privileges for
three (3) designated individuals. The
first Designee shall be Flint Oak’s contact for billing purposes. All designees
must be directly employed by said
company or an associate of the same
firm as the Owner of the Membership.
Designees may be changed at no
charge provided the Owner of the
Membership notifies Flint Oak in writing of the substitution.
Junior (Single designee)
Junior Memberships, for those between the ages of twenty-one and
forty, require current Hunt Member

designated individual and are nontransferable. The designee of a Junior

Senior Memberships are available
to our current members, who have

designated individual and is nontransferable. The designee of a Senior Membership will be responsible for
any charges incurred by his guests
Dues and Charges
1. Membership dues, regardless of
Membership type, shall be paid in
advance. Hunt Membership dues
will establish membership for one
year from the date of acceptance.
2. All monthly charges will be due the
tenth of the month following the
month such charges were incurred.
3. Members will be responsible for any
charges and/or damages incurred
by their guests. Guests will have no
billing privileges.
4. Members will be billed monthly.
5. Corporate Membership billings will
be to one designated Member, and
will not be broken down to individual
designee charges.
6. Hunt credits and/or services included with the initial membership
fee must be used during the months
of membership. They do not carry
over to another membership year,
nor are such unused services subject to refund at the conclusion of the
membership. Social Memberships
receive no hunt credits.
On a Corporate Membership the first
Designee or his assigned should collect
and forward any moneys paid in order
to keep the account accurate. Flint Oak
will consider the corporate membership
as one account and cannot credit individuals in that account as well as assign
hunt credits to individuals in that account. All monies received will be applied to earliest invoices.
The Corporate Membership rate is extended due to the reduction in bookkeeping on one account rather than
three individual accounts.

FISHING REMINDERS
Fishing is April 1st through October 31st.
Catch and release only for Bass and Wipers.
See fishing rules. During these months fishing for overnight guests and Social Members is at Center Lake, Duck Pond, along the
creek and Lodge Lake from the silo to the
windsock. Indian Lake is not included. During the month of September fishing lakes
may be booked as long as no European or
Field Hunts are scheduled in the vicinity.
During fishing season Flint Oak rental
boats are permitted on Center Lake. No
boats are allowed on Lodge Lake or Timber
Lake due to the shot fall from Sporting
Clays. We are very concerned about contamination of our water, with either zebra
mussels or other non-native species. Under
no circumstances will boats not owned by
Flint Oak be allowed on any of the lakes or
the creek. No waders allowed. Artificial bait
only in the lakes, barbless hooks required.
GUIDED FISHING CANCELLATIONS
SUMMER
RESERVATIONS AND CANCELLATIONS
All activities at Flint Oak require ADVANCE RESERVATIONS. We limit the
reservations we accept to the personnel and
facilities we have available. Unlike the airlines, WE DO NOT OVERBOOK! If we accept your reservation, we guarantee that we
will have everything required for your activities (just like buying a ticket to a ballgame).
We are located ³GHHS in the FRXQWU\´ and do
not have passer-by business. Our food
orders and personnel schedules are
made weekly and must be based on
advance reservations.
Once your reservation is booked, we
incur the expense of whatever advance ordering and planning are required. So if you
fail to come, or cancel after the expense of
preparations has been incurred, what is fair?
Should all guests be penalized by increased
charges to cover these expenses? Most of
our guests believe it is fairer to charge a
cancellation fee to those who create the increased cost!
Guided fishing cancellations received
eight (8) days in advance, no charge; cancelled seven (7) days or less $125 per boat
reserved.
