Robin M. Giblin-Davis, Professor, Entomology and Nematology & Acting Center Co-Director 50% Administration; 40% Research; 10% Teaching My position involves basic and applied research concerning soil, plant-parasitic and insect-associated nematodes. The research is focused on nematode biodiversity, identification and systematics, barcoding and molecular phylogenetics, soil ecology, and biological control. It also entails work on the management of nematode populations in warm-season turfgrasses, and woody and foliage ornamentals. University of Florida Postdoctoral Associate (1982-1985) University of California, Riverside Research Assistant (1978-1982) University of California, Davis Research Responsibilities Nematode taxonomy and biodiversity (FLA-FTL-005296, expires 2019) 1 Objective 1: Conduct nematode species inventories to elucidate nematode biodiversity and digitize new species descriptions and re-describe inadequately described species by linking morphology and molecular operational taxonomic units (MOTUs) and by using reverse taxonomy and next generation sequencing methodologies. 1A) Improve turf and ornamental nematode identification and control. 1B) Improve nematode identification in Florida and other parts of the world. 1C) Elucidate the fundamentals of global latitudinal diversity in nematodes. Objective 2: Improve our understanding of nematodes as invasive species through associations with plants, soil, water and vertebrate and invertebrate animals and develop innovative identification and detection tools using digitized species database. Teaching Responsibilities Teaches General Principles of Nematology (NEM 3002) and Graduate Survey of Nematology (NEM 5002C) in spring of even numbered years and serves as a Graduate Faculty member. Accomplishments Served as Vice President, (2001-2002), President-elect, (2002-2003), President, (2003-2004), and Past-President (2004-2005) of the Society of Nematologists (SON) http://www.nematologists.org/ and as chairperson of the Cobb Foundation (2007-2010). Currently serves as the International Federation of Nematology Societies (IFNS) councilor to SON (2014-present). Helped elucidate the population dynamics of the sting nematode, Belonolaimus longicaudatus on a highly susceptible St. Augustinegrass (FX-313) and evaluated turfgrass tolerance to this nematode in St. Augustinegrass and bermudagrass germplasm. Helped discover differential host suitability and susceptibility in St. Augustinegrasses that may be due to differences in root architecture. Discovered, described, and helped elucidate the potential for a new species of Pasteuria (Candidatus Pasteuria usgae) attacking B. longicaudatus (USGA funded) and other species of Pasteuria. Helped elucidate the introduction, establishment and spread of the invasive turfgrass nematode, Ibipora lolii (Southern sting nematode) in Australia. Continues to support Dr. Billy Crow’s (UF) program on turfgrass nematology through involvement on graduate student committees and projects. Discovered and described an association between several new species of nematodes (Schistonchus sensu latu, Bursaphelenchus, Teratodiplogaster, Parasitodiplogaster) which are associated with Ficus spp. and fig wasps in Florida and the tropics. In cooperation with Drs. Natsumi Kanzaki (Japan), Kerrie Davies (Australia), Yongsan Zeng (China), Selcuk Hazir (Turkey), Meike Woehr (South Africa), Jaco Greeff (South Africa), Ralf Sommer (Germany), E. Allen Herre (Panama), Weimin Ye (NC Dept. Ag.), and Alejandro Esquivel (Costa Rica), continues to study this model system and describe new species (NSF funded). Helped elucidate and field-test the male-produced aggregation pheromones and attractive host-plant volatiles for the palmetto weevil, Rhynchophorus cruentatus, the rotten sugarcane weevil, Metamasius hemipterus sericeus, and the South American palm weevil, Dynamis borassi (all potential vectors for the red ring nematode [Bursaphelenchus cocophilus] of palms). Also helped 2 identify aggregation pheromones for the New Guinea sugarcane weevil, Rhabdoscelus obscurus from Australia and Hawaii (USDA funded). Helped elucidate the ecology, biology and coevolutionary relationships of Fergusobia/Fergusonina gall complex for use as a biological control agent against shoot and inflorescence buds of Melaleuca quinquenervia in Florida (USDA funded). This was done in cooperation with Drs. Kerrie Davies, Matt Purcell, Jeff Makinson and Gary Taylor (Australia), Sonja Scheffer, Paul Pratt and Ted Center (USDA), Weimin Ye (NC Dept. Ag.), and W. Kelley Thomas (UNH). Continues to develop a morphological and molecular database of nematodes of Florida, the Caribbean, and Costa Rica (USDA funded). In cooperation with Drs. Deborah Neher (U. Vermont), Tom Powers (U. Nebraska), Patricia Stock (U. Arizona), Natsumi Kanzaki (Japan), Dorota Porazinska (UF), and Kerrie Davies (Australia) conducted a species inventory of nematodes in tropical rain forests of Costa Rica (NSF funded). http://nematode.unl.edu/CRhome.htm. Helped develop and validate a molecular method of metagenomic analysis of nematodes using 454 Genome Sequencer FLX methodology. This methodology has potential for improving taxonomic resolution in future studies of nematode ecology in agricultural ecosystems and for soil conservation. This work was done in cooperation with Drs. Dorota Porazinska (UF), Kerrie Davies and Matt Purcell (Australia), W. Kelley Thomas, Way Sung and Krys Morris (UNH), and Simon Creer (Wales).
