Provincial Election – Tuesday, May 5th, 2015
The Provincial Government Election is upon us. I know we have just gone through our own
Election and maybe we have a little bit of Election fatigue. Our participation in Provincial Elections
becomes very important. The participation of the FMFN is usually fairly low. We would like to change
that. We think that in order to make positive changes, First Nations need to have a voice and if they
participate they will begin to have a voice.
Over the past year we have been battling with the Provincial Government on a number of
issues, including the protection of Moose Lake. In a meeting with Premier Jim Prentice (PC) and MLA
Don Scott (PC), the issues concerning Fort McKay were discussed. The Premier of Alberta, Jim Prentice,
has agreed to work with us to put in place a Moose Lake Protection Plan by September 30th, 2015 and
has asked Don Scott to facilitate with us on ensuring we are consulted on issues related to Fort McKay.
No Alberta Premier has ever made this commitment to us before.
We have achieved measured success by working hard with the Provincial Government but yet
not selling out on our principals of environmental protection and the wellbeing of the Fort McKay and its
people.
In our experience, we believe that it is better to have the ear of Government to help with
changes than to be sitting across the table and pounding the table and not be heard.
We are not suggesting that you support any one party over the other. Rather, we are
encouraging you to exercise your democratic right and participate in this Provincial Election. Show the
Provincial Government that Fort McKay does have a voice!
