Come join the celebration at Fortnightly's annual Spring Luncheon on May 6th. President Karen Kennedy has lined up a dynamic professor from the MU Physics and Astronomy department, Dr. Angela Speck, who will lecture on the total solar eclipse occurring in 2017. This year's Fortnightly scholarship recipients will also be there to accept their awards and chat with members. And we'll introduce next year's board members and wish those who are leaving their current positions well. The menu includes shitake mushroom and asparagus crepes, a side salad, rolls and cookies. Join us for punch at 11:00 to be followed by lunch at 11:30. As always, you'll find a reservation form and parking pass in this newsletter. Treasurer Mary Druce will be accepting reservations and payment through April 24th. I am so looking forward to our gardening adventure at Strawberry Hills Farm this spring! Last year I discovered lemongrass as a substitute for spikes in potted plants. After it took over my pots, I chewed on a Greetings from piece, savoring its ‘lemon-ness;’ I planned to President cultivate its culinary properties but never Karen did. This year I’m going to hunt down a Kennedy lemongrass recipe or two. . . and try another new bedding plant. I know the 5:00-7:00 time slot can be a challenge, but this delightful event was my favorite in Fortnightly last year, and I encourage you to join us for the wine and goodies, the gardening lesson and the camaraderie. Come bloom with Fortnightly! Are you a tea drinker? Take note of our new interest group devoted to teas, tea shops and drinking tea. You can be a founding member. It seems there’s always a new interest on the horizon for the creative ladies of Fortnightly. Springtime is around the corner (though I just came in from shoveling snow!) Our president-elect, Tamara Stam, is looking for a ‘few good women’ to round out next year’s Fortnightly board. I hope you will consider sharing your talents. We will introduce the 2015-16 board at the spring luncheon in May. Announcing a new interest group...... If you love tea or want to learn more about the world of teas, come join the Tea Group. Each month the group will meet in a member's home or in an area tea room to sip tea and socialize. Some of the places we will visit include Cherrie's Tea Room (Columbia), High Street Victorian (Hallsville), Victoria Country Inn (Boonville), Shady Gables (Versailles) and Japanese Tea Etiquette (Rocheport). We'll discuss topics ranging from global and local tea etiquette to the health benefits of tea, including a look at how tea compares to coffee and the difference between green, black, red, white and herbal teas. Our first meeting is scheduled for Friday, May 8th , 10:30 am at chairperson Teresa Villagra's house located at 2606 Luan Ct., Columbia, MO RSVP to Teresa at (573) 356-1609 by May 1st if you can join the group for the first meeting. On May 13, at 11:00 am, the board will convene at the Daniel Boone Public Library in Conference Room A to say good-bye to outgoing officers and board members and welcome incoming members. Following this transition meeting, new board members will begin planning for the upcoming year. This second session will be held at a surprise location and include lunch! If you are not on the board but would like to observe meetings or assist this year, please contact Tamara Stam ([email protected]) to request an invitation to join us that day. If you are interested in serving on the board, we still have openings for Treasurer and President-elect and welcome anyone who'd like to volunteer! After Bernice passed away at the age of 99 in the summer of 2008, the members voted to rename the group in her honor. In 2007 the first tour occurred and continues each fall and spring with a tour followed by lunch at the University Club. We meet in homes and work with a variety of mediums and techniques: clay, sewing, felt, painting, felting, stenciling, etc. We plan projects in May for the following year and pay a fee in September to cover the cost of a year's worth of material. One field trip a year is taken.
