Fine Lines~March 2015 o' Fort Wayne Artists Guild, Inc www.fortwayneartistsguild.org ~Just some presidential thoughts . . . March has officially entered as a lion again this year but spring is on the way. Soon the plein air schedule will be out and I will come out to paint this year . . . . I promise. With the change of seasons, I feel this is a good time to encourage all to consider the possibility of taking a committee or board position in the Guild. Many will be opening this year, and it would be a great opportunity to give back to this organization. I will be putting my name in for the office of President again this year, but many board members have served consecutive terms at different offices and would like a break. I am hoping to grant their wishes and let them step back with new volunteers stepping up. If you have any desire to serve or have any questions about the offices, please feel free to contact me. I hope you will consider it. Read more about this year's show on p. 3 of this newsletter so you can start preparing to enter your best artwork in a few months. FWAG members working on Anita's committee are: Barb Yoder, Karen Harvey, Nancy Longmate, John Kelty, and Bob Einhaus. Anita married her high school sweetheart, Steven, and they have raised 3 children. For years, Anita was a stay-at-home mother, working part time in her husband's family business. While her children were in college, she participated in juried art shows, making redwood flower baskets. She also returned to college to earn her BA degree and took as many art classes as possible, discovering her love of painting. While watercolor was her choice for 20 years, she now enjoys impressionistic oil painting, doing still life and landscapes. She has been a member of FWAG for eight years and held the position of Vice President for two years. "It has been a wonderful experience working with a great committee and other members of the FWAG." Life is never dull for her as she and her husband also travel, spend time with their nine grandchildren, and play tennis. "For me, life is a great journey and a beautiful expression of the soul. I see art everywhere! Like Henri Matisse said, 'There are always flowers for those who want to see them.'" Fine Lines March 2015 3 2015 FWAG VENTURES IN CREATIVITY KATHRYN CLARK, JUDGE AND WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR Our judge and workshop instructor this year is Kathryn Clark from Brookston, IN. She has a BFA in Printmaking and Ceramics from Wittenberg Univ. and an MFA in Printmaking from Wayne State Univ. She and her husband founded Twinrocker Handmade Paper and were instrumental in the revival of hand papermaking in America. FWAG~VENTURES 2015 M/Tues, June 22/23-Drop off M/Tues, June 29/30-PU unaccepted Sat, July 11-Opg Reception Mon, July 13-Aug 21-Show M/Tues, Aug 24/25-PU work "Log Jam" "Island Lights" In the 1980's, they developed fine drawing and watercolor papers, which led to her interest in painting and drawing. Today, Kathryn exhibits art works in watercolor, graphite, and, more recently, oil. She now paints out of doors, directly from nature, "plein air," as much as possible, and in her studio. Since becoming a fulltime painter in 2008 and adding oil painting as a medium, she's experienced a great deal of recognition in that genre. She was voted an artist member of the Indiana Artists Club and the Brown County Art Guild in Nashville, IN. She's also won awards in juried exhibitions at the Hoosier Salon, Indiana Heritage Arts, Indiana Artists Club, and more. Her Judging Criteria: "As with most judges, I study each art work at length and on several occasions, usually moving the pieces during judging. I look for the emotional impact and imagination of the art work, and then consider the principles of good design: impact and strength of the center of interest, contrast, balance, unity, movement, pattern and rhythm. I also look for effective elements like color, value, shape and form, depth of space, line, and edges. I am looking for exciting, fluid yet controlled, strokes by the artist's hand that show confidence and reflect the artist's personality. This is what usually separates good art works in any media from the exceptional ones. I try to be objective in my judging, choosing 'most successful' works of art, and then, within that group, my personal favorites. The prize winners will reflect both of those."
