In the early years of the chapter there was a national nurse of the year award and we would submit a name from our chapter for consideration. A little over a decade ago the family of a breast cancer patient approached Cancer Care Services about the desire to honor oncology nurses. They had been touched by the care that their mother had received and wanted to give back. The original vision and endowment for this award was “ for the general educational and enrichment support of Oncology nurses who work in the Tarrant County area.” Eventually it was decided that the Fort Worth Regional Chapter would name a Nurse of the Year and Cancer Care Services would honor that nurse at a public event. When the Cowtown Oncology Symposium came into existence it also became the place to announce the winner. We are very proud to announce this year’s winner is Tracy Messing. Tracy’s nomination letter mentioned her role as a preceptor and mentor when she was working at Texas Health HEB on the oncology unit. Tracy has had multiple roles in oncology and was a very engaging chapter Board member and then President of our chapter last year. She doesn’t like the spotlight so it was fun to surprise her with this announcement. Winners of this award are designated on a plaque at the Cancer Care Services office. Previous recipients are: · · · · · · · · · · · Paula Pauley, 2004 Karen Atchley, 2005 LeeAnne Vandegriff, 2006 Rhonda Ford, 2007 Suzy Lockwood, 2008 Tammy Quattrochi, 2009 Dawna Stankus, 2010 Judy Goldthorp, 2011 Cleo Deguzman, 2013 Michelle Grodi, 2014 Tracy Messing, 2015 Congratulations to all of these outstanding oncology nurses!
