Four Rivers Heritage Area Sponsors 8th Annual Maryland Day Celebration at Annapolis and
Southern Anne Arundel County Heritage Sites
Maryland Day marks the formal founding of the colony of Maryland, when settlers from England celebrated a
Mass of Thanksgiving on St. Clement’s Island in what is now St. Mary’s County, Maryland. The Maryland
settlement was authorized under a charter granted on June 20, 1632 by Charles I of England to Cecilius
Calvert, 2nd Baron of Baltimore. On March 25th, the English settlers held a day of thanksgiving on the island
for the safe end to their voyage. In 1916, the Maryland General Assembly authorized Maryland Day as a legal
holiday devoted to Maryland history.
For the eighth year in a row, Four Rivers Heritage Area is partnering with regional heritage organizations and
businesses to showcase the area’s historical, cultural and natural heritage. Events and activities will take place
throughout the Maryland Day Celebration weekend of March 20, 21, and 22 for one dollar or less; many of the
activities are FREE!

MainStreets Annapolis Partnership, activities at various businesses around downtown Annapolis. Enjoy an early spring
shopping stroll through downtown Annapolis, stopping for a break at the MainStreets Annapolis Partnership Pocket
Park. Begin your Walk Annapolis afternoon with a "Maryland Day Scavenger Hunt for History" and discover the unique
Made in Maryland products sold by many of our local merchants. Then stop in at some historic hostelries, pubs and
cultural sites and support the local business community while you learn more about our unique history and heritage.
The Scavenger Hunt for History begins on Maryland Day weekend, March 20th, and continues each Friday evening until
April 3rd; stores will be open until 8:00 p.m. for your shopping and history-hunting pleasure. Prizes will be awarded. Pick
up your Annapolis Scavenger Hunt map at Annapolis Collections on West Street, Annebeth’s on Maryland Avenue, the
Historic Annapolis Museum Store on Main Street, or the Annapolis and Anne Arundel Convention and Visitors Center on
West Street, or look for stores along Main Street, Maryland Avenue or West Street with a number in their window.

Annapolis Maritime Museum, 723 Second Street, Annapolis. Visitors can join one of our trained docents for a guided
tour of the historic McNasby oyster packing plant. The exhibit features an 850 gallon aquarium filled with Chesapeake
Bay critters as well as a waterman workboat “Miss Lonesome.” The interactive exhibit allows visitors to participate in
activities such as hand tonging from the washboards of our workboat, dressing as a waterman, and culling oysters. Free,
noon to 4:00 p.m.
Chesapeake Bay Foundation, 4800 Atwell Road, Shady Side. Help restore the native Chesapeake Bay oyster population
by constructing concrete reef balls that will serve as habitats for oysters, fish, blue crabs, and other critters. Dress
appropriately – gloves, boots, and warm clothes that can get wet and dirty – as this is an outdoor event. Tour the Oyster
Restoration Center afterwards to learn all that CBF is doing to restore the native oyster population in the Bay. Limited to

Chesapeake Children’s Museum, 25 Silopanna Road, Annapolis. The Chesapeake Children’s Museum will be offering
tours for school groups on Friday, March 20th and offering $1.00 tours on Saturday and Sunday. Children will have an
opportunity to take a selfie with an animal! $1.00 per person, 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Courthouse Museum, Anne Arundel County Courthouse, 7 Church Circle, Annapolis. If you like the shows CSI or Law and
Order, this exhibit is for you! Come to the Courthouse to see the exhibition Crossroads of the Community that illustrates
the history that happened right here in Annapolis. Members of the team who created the exhibit will be on hand to
provide more details. There is no need to go through the Courthouse security to visit this exhibit. Free, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00
p.m.
Historic Annapolis Museum & Store, 99 Main Street, Annapolis. Visitors will see and hear the story of resistance to
servitude and slavery in the Chesapeake region. The interactive exhibit takes visitors from the Colonial Period through
the Civil War. Historic Annapolis exhibit guides will lead visitors through hands-on activities and thought- provoking
debates on freedom. Free, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Maryland State Archives, 350 Rowe Blvd, Annapolis. Take home a snapshot of history! Come visit the Maryland State
Archives to begin your visual journey through Maryland’s past. While you are here, select a prop and pose for a selfie
with a life-sized print from the state’s collection. Then, pick up a few historic images from our photographic collections
to compare with their modern day locations downtown, creating a photo-mashup. Be sure to check out the historic
maps on display to help you on this visual scavenger hunt! Please join us for this opportunity to picture yourself in

Maryland State House, 100 State Circle, Annapolis. George Washington resigned his military commission here! Visit the
Maryland State House from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. for a special curator’s tour of the historic Old Senate Chamber, which
has just been restored to its appearance on December 23, 1783, the day that General George Washington stood before
Congress in the Old Senate Chamber to surrender his command of the Continental Army. Curators from the Maryland
State Archives will explain the importance of Washington’s resignation, which established the precedent of civilian
control of the American military, and provide insights into the chamber’s recent restoration. Washington’s personal
copy of his resignation speech, which he read in the Old Senate Chamber, will be exhibited in the State House rotunda. A
photo ID is required to enter the State House. Occupancy in the rooms is limited, so there may be a brief wait at certain
times. Guests are encouraged to take a self-guided tour of the Maryland State House. Free, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Mitchell Gallery at St. John’s College, 60 College Avenue, Mellon Hall, Annapolis. The Elizabeth Myers Mitchell Gallery,
founded in 1989, is located on the historic St. John’s College campus. The gallery’s current exhibition, “An Ear for Music,
An Eye for Art: Selections from the Ahmet Ertegün Collection,” features paintings collected by a St. John’s alumnus who
founded of one of the major record companies of the 20th century. Come and discover more about this visionary
entrepreneur. The Mitchell Gallery is a nationally accredited museum and offers educational programs for all ages:
lectures, gallery talks, seminar, a Junior Member’s program, and tours for school and other groups. Free, noon to 5:00

United States Naval Academy, Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center, 52 King George Street, (inside Gate 1, Randall Street),

SPECIAL MARYLAND DAY FLAG-RAISING CEREMONY, 10:00 a.m. Flag Pole at Susan Campbell Park, Annapolis. Four Rivers
Heritage Area and partners present a spirit-lifting flag raising ceremony! All are welcome, free and open to the public.
Music by the Annapolis Drum and Bugle Corps and flag detail by the award-winning USNA League Cadets of the Training
Ship Mercedes.
Following the Ceremony, join Annapolis Tours by Watermark for “Tricorns and Tennis Shoes!” -- leaving from Susan
Campbell Park, City Dock, Annapolis at 10:30 a.m. (Wear comfy Shoes for this tour; not a race, just a nice pace!) Fresh
air, fun, history and exercise come together for this romp through town! Run through the city to see the homes of each
of our Maryland Signers of the Declaration of Independence, visit colonial era merchant homes and other historic sites
that symbolize Maryland’s Pre-Revolutionary War spirit of creativity, individuality, and respect for order, all of which
were significant in our Constitution once we won our independence. Some of the stops included are: Jonas Green

Asbury Broadneck United Methodist Church, 657 Broadneck Road, Annapolis. Discover African-American History and
Heritage at Asbury Broadneck United Methodist Church. Asbury Broadneck is the oldest African-American church
located on the Broadneck Peninsula. Visit the present church site that dates back to 1888, view the church’s 175th
Anniversary Quilt, and tour the historic burial grounds where more than 2,000 people are interred, including the cousin
of Frederick Bailey Douglass. Hear about the plight of Civil War hero Nelson Stevens who also is buried in the cemetery.
The Cemetery Preservation Project Committee will share some of this rich history during its tour. The committee has
compiled a history book that includes the history of the church and those who are interred in the historic burial grounds.

tours. Explore the museum with experienced guides who will lead you on a tour of African American heritage. Free,

Belvoir Scott’s Plantation, 1534 Generals Highway, Crownsville. Visitors will be able to get a glimpse into one of Anne
Arundel County’s best kept historic treasures! Belvoir, once owned by Francis Scott Key’s grandparents, is now under the
stewardship of Rockbridge Academy. Enjoy a free walking tour of Belvoir Scott’s Plantation and the historic Manor
House. Learn about the history of the plantation throughout the years. In the event of inclement weather, this event

Captain Avery Museum, 1418 East West Shady Side Road, Shady Side. The Museum will be hosting eco-Rock Star Greg
Kearns! Greg will be giving a PowerPoint presentation with a Q & A, themed “Greet the Osprey.” Greg is a nationally
renowned wetlands and wildlife expert who will be giving a special talk about Osprey. Get the inside scoop on this
magnificent marine raptor that you see all the time and wish you knew more about. Free, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Charles Carroll House, 107 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis. “The Carrolls From Offaly to Maryland: A Photographic
Essay by Denny Lynch.” In this exhibition, photographer Denny Lynch documents the indelible mark the Carrolls left on
lands on both sides of the Atlantic. Many of the photographs are the result of journeys Denny made to Ely O’Carroll
Country. There he captured images of castles, landscapes and historical sites associated with this family. Mr. Lynch will
give a lecture about his experiences and the exhibit on Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Carroll House. Come take a

Chase Lloyd House, 22 Maryland Avenue, Annapolis. The Chase Lloyd House welcomes you to tour its beautiful 18th
century public rooms and 21st century Bay-Wise garden. Listen and waltz to traditional music of the colonial period
offered by the Weems Creek Jammers. The tours and music continue throughout the afternoon from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.,

Join CBF’s Maryland Senior Scientist and staff to learn about the natural history and current state of the Chesapeake

Tour CBF’s environmentally sustainable headquarters building and find out why it’s one of the world’s most energyefficient buildings. Get a firsthand look at how CBF incorporated natural elements into a fully functional workplace

Goshen Farm, 1420 Cape St. Claire Road, Annapolis. Take a family getaway to the Maryland countryside. Good fun for
everyone in the family at Goshen Farm: Listen to music; participate in children’s old-fashioned games and activities;
explore the 22 acres of greenspace, open meadows, and walking trails in the woods. Tour the historic 1783 Goshen Farm
House and marvel at the exposed, 18th century construction. View the ironstone quarry from which stone was used to
build the Farm House’s foundation. Hear about the people who have farmed this land since the 1600’s and the crops
they produced. Wander through the 62-plot community Sharing Garden, talk with the gardeners, peek into the High
Tunnel/Greenhouse and see what’s growing. Free, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Hammond Harwood House, 19 Maryland Avenue, Annapolis. Family tours focusing on approachable ways to introduce
your children into a museum’s collection. The special Maryland Day tours are fun and interactive, focusing on making
connections between people’s own lives and collections in the museum’s period rooms. After the tour there will be

18th century Annapolis. Historic interpreters will relate the labor intensive and difficult lives of the lower class working
men and women of Annapolis during the 18th century. Experience hands-on activities and hear tales of travel to the
western frontier-you might be surprised how close it was! Last entry time into Hogshead will be 3:45 p.m. Free, noon to

Historic Annapolis’s William Paca House and Garden, 186 Prince George Street, Annapolis. Visit the 1765 William Paca
House and Gardens to experience what life was like for a wealthy Annapolis family during the years leading up to the
American Revolution. Come meet the men and women who would have lived and worked in the house and gardens.
Hands-on activities will help you decide if you could have lived in the house during the 18th century! $1.00 per person,
10:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
Historic Annapolis’s James Brice House, 42 East Street, Annapolis. Visit the ca. 1767 house built by James Brice, a
lawyer, planter, county officeholder and member of Maryland’s Executive Council for many years and acting Governor in
1792. The impressive five-part Georgian house is an architectural gem. Come learn about how the house was
constructed and the lives of those who lived and worked in the house. Free, noon to 4:00 p.m.
Historic London Town and Gardens, 839 Londontown Road, Edgewater. Picture yourself in colonial London Town! We’ll
have plenty of photo opportunities as you explore our wooded gardens and immerse yourself in the lives of Maryland
colonists. Try your hand at activities that were essential to daily life 300 years ago and chat about the past with
costumed interpreters. Create your own self portrait, or on Saturday afternoon, stop for a moment to have your portrait
made by silhouette artist Lauren Muney. $1.00 per person, 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

special guest John Christensen, the author of the book: MCDOWELL HALL AT ST JOHN’S COLLEGE. He will lead tours and
answer questions about the history of this central building on the St. John’s Campus, aided by additional guides from the
Friends of St. John’s. The McDowell Hall book will be available for purchase at the special price of $5 and can be
autographed by the author. Refreshments will be served. In addition to capturing your “picture in history” with your
selfie, we will have extension rods available for those who would like a broader view. Free, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

up Annapolis Street to celebrate the era of 1900 to 1920, when Miss Elizabeth Giddings and Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr.

Anne Arundel Public Water Access Committee, Loch Haven Drive, Edgewater. Explore South River Farms Park with the
Anne Arundel Public Water Access Committee, Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks and South
River Federation. This rustic county park on the South River has 170 acres of woods and meadow, a 300 yard sandy
beach, two tidal ponds and hiking trails. The park will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday 3/22/15. Walk
through the park on your own or join a guided one hour walk at 10:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. Free, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Directions: Take Route 2 south of Annapolis. Cross the South River. Turn left/east on Central Avenue/ MD 214 and go
1.9 miles. Turn left on Loch Haven Road at the BP gas station. Continue for 1.4 miles as the road turns into Loch Haven
Drive. There is no park sign so keep an eye out on your right for a wide drive with a yellow metal gate set back from
the road. That drive is the entrance to South River Farms Park. If you pass Walnut Drive on your left, you’ve gone 20
feet too far.
Captain Avery Museum, 1418 East West Shady Side Road, Shady Side. The Captain Avery Museum is celebrating
Maryland’s past and present by opening their historic waterman’s home and gallery space to the students and teachers
of Southern High School. Taste dishes prepared from historic Maryland recipes, enjoy music, and explore the historic
home and contemporary gallery. Come see Emergent | an exhibition. Free, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Charles Carroll House, 107 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis. “The Carrolls From Offaly to Maryland: A Photographic
Essay by Denny Lynch.” In this exhibition, photographer Denny Lynch documents the indelible mark the Carrolls left on
lands on both sides of the Atlantic. Many of the photographs are the result of journeys Denny made to Ely O’Carroll
Country. There he captured images of castles, landscapes and historical sites associated with this family. Mr. Lynch will
give a lecture about his experiences and the exhibit on Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Carroll House. Come take a

Chesapeake Children’s Museum, 25 Silopanna Road, Annapolis. The Chesapeake Children’s Museum will be offering

butter, and enjoy the results. Tong for oysters with our waterman and learn the art of quilting, crocheting or candle
wicking from our housewives. Scholars, take a penmanship class at our one room school, using slates or pen and ink.
Visit an African-American Beneficial Society meetinghouse or a country church. Refreshments sold by the Deale Area

Enticement Stables at Obligation Farm, 4024 Solomons Island Road, Harwood. Enticement Stables at Obligation Farm
invites YOU to come meet a pony and tour our historical farm. Our farm began as a tobacco farm and has been

Franklin United Methodist Church, 5345 Deale- Churchton Rd., Churchton. The church has been serving this AfricanAmerican community since 1865. This year marks the congregation’s 150th anniversary and plans are underway for its

photos from the past that reflect the history of Churchton, Shady Side, and beyond. Learn about the history of the
Beneficial Burial Society; view the 100-year-old quilt and other historical artifacts from of this historic church and

precursor, Sea Witch, will be on display. Twenty owners will be on hand to discuss the joy of sailing and racing 20’s as

your children into a museum’s collection. The special Maryland Day tours are fun and interactive, focusing on making
