WEAVEING CLASS IN POTSDAM
POTSDAM – Weaving class Expert weaver, Cait Throop,
will host a weaving class at her home studio for the St. Lawrence County Arts Council on Saturday, March 2nd from
9:00am-5:00pm.
Students will handweave a triangle scarf on a wooden
loom with Throop’s guidance, and take home a completed
scarf at the end of the day. Examples of Throop’s completed
triangle scarves may be viewed at etsy.com/shop/barefootweaver.
Throop’s studio is located at 1850 County Route 35. The
$110 cost for the all-day workshop includes all materials, and

THE ART OF CRITIQUE AND MIND MAPPING
The North Country Arts Council will kick-off its
2013 “Lucky Seven” lecture series with “The Art
of Critique and Mind Mapping,” a presentation by
Educational Consultant Mary Ellen Kalil Shevalier.
The event will take place on March 7th at Arts
on the Square, 52 Public Square, Watertown, and
will begin at 7:00 p.m. Admission is $7.
In this presentation, audience members will
learn the “Art of Critique”—and walk away with
the skills necessary for giving and receiving critiquing techniques that are tools for growth.
In part two of Shevailier’s lecture, participants
will learn the basis of “Mind-Mapping”—a method
of note taking, memorizing, “brain streaming” and
goal setting designed to stimulate the mind and
increase one’s potential.
Instructor Mary Ellen Kalil Shevalier, has thirty
years teaching experience as an art educator in
the public school system and has been in the forefront of educational reform. She has presented
at numerous venues including; ISTE conference,
an Diego, Education leadership conference, Lake
Placid, NYSATA Keynote, Tarrytown, and numerous regional and state wide professional development venues.
Shevalier is also co-author of: World Class,
the Re-Education of America. Her expertise as an
art teacher and artist has allowed her to share the
“Art of Critique” and “Mind-Mapping” to benefit
teachers and students of all content areas and of
all ages.
Shevalier’s presentation will be the first of
seven lectures on the arts—taking place on seven
consecutive Thursdays beginning March 7th.

EGG PAINTING CLASS Jam Reminder
Well-known, local ceramic artist Ursula Mickel will
teach a workshop on how to use ceramic decoration techniques to create unique Easter eggs at two special classes
at Arts on the Square in Watertown.
Classes will take place on the following dates and times:

A ceramic egg, materials and kiln firing are included in

The strange case of Jack Nicholson…John
Joseph Nicholson Jr. was born on April 22, 1937.
His parents were John Joseph Sr. and Ethel May,
and he grew up in New Jersey with his much older
sisters, June and Lorraine. It wasn’t until 1975,
when Jack was 38, that he found out his “parents”
were really his grandparents, and that his sister
June was actually his mother. “I was stunned,”
said Jack. Sounds about right.
Who his real father was remains a mystery.
His mother became pregnant when she was 19,
and married a Hollywood song and dance man
named Donald Furcillo, stage name Don Rose.
Trouble was, he was already married. He believed
throughout his lifetime that he was Jack’s father…apparently both June and Ethel May knew
the truth, but never told Jack. When June wanted
to put little Jack up for adoption, her parents offered to raise him. Oddly enough, the same thing
happened to singer Bobby Darin…in 1968, when
he was thinking about running for public office,
his family told him that his sister was really his
mother. He was 32 at the time.
Scarlett and the gunfighter…You may have
heard that “Gone With the Wind” author Margaret Mitchell was related to real-life western dentist
John Henry “Doc” Holliday…and she was, sort of.
Mitchell’s great grandfather’s niece married Doc
Holliday’s uncle…thus there was no blood relation
between the two.
It all boils down to Martha Anne Holliday…
known as Mattie…and Doc’s first cousin, daughter
of his father’s brother. Mattie’s mother was Mary
Ann Fitzgerald, niece of Phillip Fitzgerald, Mitchell’s mother’s material grandfather, and at whose
Georgia estate Mitchell spent some summers…
”Rural Home” as the family called it, the inspiration
for the Tara plantation. By this time, Doc was long
dead, and cousin Mattie, now a retired nun named
Sister Mary Melanie, told young Mitchell stories
of her famous cousin’s exploits. So she was the
link…related to Doc Holliday on her father’s side,
and to Margaret Mitchell on her mother’s side.
And yes, the character of Melanie Hamilton
was based on Mitchell’s second cousin once removed…she asked permission to use her name,
and got the reported reply: “Only if she’s a nice person.” Some go so far as to say that Ashley Wilkes
was based on Doc Holliday, and that’s true only in
the loosest sense…in the novel, Ashley and Melanie are second cousins…and in real life, there was
supposedly a brief romance between first cousins
Mattie and Doc when they were teenagers, but
their descendants have adamantly denied this.
Speaking of gunfighters…You might recall a
TV show from the late 1950s called “Colt .45” It
starred Wayde Preston as a special agent of President Grant…his cover, a traveling gun salesman.
His name was Christopher Colt and he was said
to be the nephew of Samuel Colt, inventor of the
famous revolver. This series was one of the stable
of oaters Warner Brothers produced at the time…
and they were apparently hard folks to work for.
Two of their biggest stars left their shows…Clint
Walter eventually returned to “Cheyenne,” but
James Garner didn’t come back to “Maverick.”
And midway thru its third season, Wayde Preston
walked out on “Colt .45.”
He was replaced by a younger actor, Donald
May, as Christopher’s cousin Sam Colt Jr., presumably the son of you-know-who. But were these
real people, as was implied? Alas, no. Samuel
Colt had 2 sons…Samuel Jr. died in infancy, and
Caldwell Hart Colt, slated to take over the family
business, was more of a sportsman and died of
tonsillitis at age 36. Curiously, Samuel’s father was
named Christopher, but that doesn’t help either.

Looking at other family members, Samuel Colt
did have a brother and a nephew named Christopher, but both died in 1855…President Grant’s
term was from 1869 to 1877. There was also a
nephew Samuel Caldwell Colt, son of brother John
Caldwell Colt, rumored to have actually been Samuel’s son. He was about the right age, but spent
his life, as did most of the rest of the family, in
New England. Brother Christopher also had a son
named Samuel Pomeroy Colt…he was known as
“Pom” and became famous as an industrialist in
Rhode Island. So the TV characters were fabrications…ironic because Warner Brother westerns
were famous for featuring real western figures…
Billy the Kid, Belle Starr, Buffalo Bill Cody, Doc Holliday, you name it…but no Colts.
It’s good to be the Kings… But you must
remember the King Family on TV…innumerable
specials and variety show appearances, plus their
own series in 1965, a mid-season replacement
for “The Outer Limits” of all things. My research
indicates 42 family members appeared on the
show, all related to the core King Sisters. They
came from a family of 6 girls and 2 boys…by this
time, 2 older sisters had retired from the quartet,
replaced by 2 younger ones. But all the siblings
appeared on the show, along with their husbands
and children. The interesting thing is, not one of
them had the last name “King”!
The father of the clan was William King Driggs,
a college music professor in Utah, who formed
a family musical group who performed locally.
When the 4 oldest sisters formed a professional
singing group, they were told at a radio station that
Driggs Sisters didn’t sound right…what’s your father’s name? King, they replied, since he used his
middle name, and that was that. In private life, the
King sisters used the surnames of their husbands,
as did their children…the most famous being
Yvonne’s daughter Tina Cole, Robbie’s wife on “My
Three Sons.” And naturally, the Driggs brothers
and their families remained Driggs.
Also fascinating is how their father got his
name. He was one of 21 children (!!) and an older
sister was engaged to one of Utah’s leading politicians of the day, William Henry King. She died before they could be married, and was buried in her
wedding dress. A year later, her little brother was
born, and named in honor of his parents’ never-tobe-son-in-law.
Uncle Old Blue Eyes?…No, not “uncle”
precisely, but Frank Sinatra is indeed related to
Richard Sinatra, who pops up in old episodes of
“Gomer Pyle USMC” and “Mr. Roberts.” He was
also in the movie “Beast from Haunted Cave,” dong
a delightful Joe Pesci imitation…in 1959, no less!
His father was Ray Sinatra, a bandleader, arranger,
and long-time associate of Mario Lanza. And Ray’s
father was 1st cousin to Frank’s father, making
Ray and Frank second cousins. Of course, in common parlance they called each other “cousins”…
as indeed does Nancy Sinatra when talking about
her “cousin Dick,” actually her third cousin…and
Frank’s second cousin once removed.
It’s often said that Frank and Ray never worked
together, but that’s not true. Ray was a good 10
years older than Frank, and well established in the
music business up in Boston where his branch of
the family lived. But he got Frank his first radio audition, and persuaded him not to change his name
to Frankie Trent. Ray also did some arrangements
for Frank, and even lead his orchestra in Las Vegas
for a time in the 1950s.
And not for nothing, but Frank’s son is named
Franklin Wayne, not Francis Albert, so “Frank
Sinatra Jr.” is actually his stage name. Can you
blame him? Not me.Till next time, relatively

The Redneck Winter Games were held in Waddington, NY on February 17 to benefit the St Lawrence
River Showdown Bassmaster Fishing Tournament. The tournament will be held this summer in Waddington
during their homecoming celebration in August. According to local sources, “The bill for Waddington to
host this event will run around $100,000. All money must be raised through donations and fundraisers.
The tournament will bring up to $2 million dollars to our local economy in less than a week’s time. In short,
it will economically benefit our entire county. We need as much support as we can get to help pull it off.”
Events for the day included: Redneck Games (Turkey Bowling, Toilet Seat Horseshoes, Hay Bale Toss and
more), Kids’ Games, Silent Auction, Raffles, Food and Local Musical Entertainment.

Microtransactions: Bane or Boon?

Forgive me Father for I have sinned. I sold
virtual armor and weapons for cash on e-Bay. It
all started early, with my affinity for role-playing
games on the computer. In the 80s it was The
Bard’s Tale, then in the 90s Diablo and Baldur’s
Gate. And then, at the turn of the millennium Diablo 2 entered into my life. It pretty much shook
the foundations of the gaming industry, so much
so that people now use “Diablo” as a reference
to an entire game genre. For my part I was pretty
good at the game. It was online, which was new
at the time, so new in fact that many people were
still using dial-up. What was fascinating was that
you could interact with other players in the game.
Specifically, you could finally show off your characters to other players. This led to a whole lot of
trading for hard to get items, which is where I
began (continued?) my path of sin.
To put it in context, in 2000 video games
still belonged to the young. There were very few
“middle-aged” gamers, much less any senior
citizens playing. And when you are young, you
generally, like me at the time, have more time
on your hands than money. With not a whole lot
of disposable income, budgets get pretty tight
(although plenty of ramen and cheap beer to go
around). So for me, when the summer of 2001
rolled around Diablo 2 had already been out for
a while, and I had gathered quite a few valuable
items through playing and trading. I wanted to
make my characters the best they could be, and
in doing so I quickly discovered that the game
had evolved its own in-game currency. The
“Stone of Jordan” ring, which granted +1 to all
skills in the game, became the base unit of currency. This developed more-or-less organically,
and Blizzard (makers of Diablo 2) had no control over things. Nonetheless, the trading system
was consistent. For example, you could count on
one SOJ to be equal to two Iceblink armors. At
the same time two other new factors came into
play: e-Bay and PayPal. The idea of “buying”
items for your character with “real-world” money
was laughable to most back then, yet somehow,
through the miracle of online commerce, it became possible. Items from the game were selling
on e-Bay, and people were paying with PayPal,
which in turn could be transferred to a real bank
account (my bank account!). I noticed that I had
accumulated quite a few of these items, and
some were selling high. I thought it over (not for
long), and then Sin City baby, the sales spigot
was open! And it didn’t take me long to realize
that a Stone of Jordan sold for $4.99 on e-Bay,
and an Iceblink armor sold for the same price. I
knew that that same SOJ would get me two Iceblinks in an in-game trade, which meant that I
didn’t even really need to play the game to make
money, I could just exploit the variations in the
respective (unregulated) markets. Buy two SOJs
on e-Bay for $8.99, trade them for four Iceblinks
in-game, sell them back on e-Bay for $4.99 each.
I just made 10 bucks. No big deal, but you start
adding things up (I kept a spreadsheet record
of my sales), and I started to make quite a bit
of money. Most of my sales were in the five to
twenty dollar range, but I did manage to fetch
$65 for an “IST” rune, and another $60 for an
Occulus wand. At one point I read about a man
who made hundreds of thousands of dollars buying lots, splitting them up, and selling the individual items for profit. I thought this was a clever
idea and gave it a shot. I purchased a lot on e-Bay
for $190, and turned it around for $350, netting a
$70 profit (only $70 because I promised my wife
a $90 pair of leather boots as a bribe to get the all
clear for the purchase in the first place).
I give you this “origins” story in the form
of a confession because at the time, in 2001, it
was a “dirty” game I was playing. At first people
didn’t understand what I was doing, then when
they did understand they didn’t believe it. When I
showed them my PayPal receipts (it got into the
thousands), they both impressed and disgusted.
“How could this possibly be?” was the typical
reaction, “How could people possibly spend
real money for virtual swords?” And after Diablo
2 it was Guild Wars, and still thousands more
in profit for me. The rest, if you will, is history.
While things started out relatively harmlessly, it
got pretty bad, pretty quickly as unscrupulous
3rd parties entered into the fray. Stories came
out about Chinese World of Warcraft gold farmers living in abandoned airport bunkers, working
16 hours a day farming gold to sell back to players. Diablo 2 was flooded with 3rd party vendors,
spamming you at every turn to go to their website to purchase in game items. I got out of the
selling game to avoid the mess that had evolved,
and game manufacturers got into this game to fix
things, and at the same time make more money
for themselves.
Today “Microtransactions” are incorporated
into most games, regardless of genre. This has
led to some very positive developments as far
as gamers are concerned, most noteworthy being the new “free to play” model, with the game
supported completely by in-game purchases.
Perhaps the most successful is The League of
Legends (LOL), although many MMOs have transitioned from subscription models to free to play/
microtransaction models (Lord of the Rings Online, The Old Republic, and DC Universe Online to
name a few). There are some serious upsides to
these trends, like the ability to try a game before
investing in it, scaled payment options for different players, and perhaps best of all: no more
horrible copy protection schemes (DRM). And so
long as microtransactions don’t upset the power
balance with the players, it is now seen by most
gamers as pretty much harmless.
Unfortunately, many gaming companies see
microtransactions as a way of bleeding more
money out of consumers, leading to after-thefact transactional overlays that compromise the
player experience for those either unwilling or
unable to pay for in-game purchases. Even worse
are games that are designed with the primary intent to make money through microtransactions,
rather than for the game experience itself. Producers like Zynga are resented by many gamers,
and even by other game developers, for cheaping
the art form with their shamelessly commercial
games (Farmville, Mafia Wars, etc...). And yes,
I do think overall microtransactions and companies like Zynga have cheapened gaming, but so
what? Not everything we do has to be high art. I
could right now head down to the Dollar Store to
buy a $1.00 box of Raisinets to munch on while
I watch my $1.50 Red Box rental of Battleship
the movie. I could instead use that $2.50 to buy
a “Warlord Shen” skin and show it off to my LOL
friends. Many people might call these a waste,
others might see view them as money well spent.
In either case I don’t think my priest will be expecting a confession.

Irish Festival and DPAO presents The Willoughby Brothers
Richie, Des, Sammy, Robbie, Johnny and Jerome, hail
from Coolboy, Co. Wicklow, six brothers with just over a
decade between the eldest and youngest. Their passion for
singing and performing, combined with a genuine closeness,
stems from a childhood filled with music and singing, a love
they carried with them through the years into adulthood. Credit
must be given to their father Richard, and mother Breda, for
nurturing and encouraging these gifts from an early age and
introducing them to a world of music and entertainment. In
the seventies and eighties their parents had their own popular country band ‘The Moonsiders’, performing at dances and
shows across the country.
They are currently making a big impression on the national and international music scene with appearances on a
number of TV and Radio shows including RTE’S ‘Up For The
Match’ the Derek Mooney Show and the John Murray Show
on Radio 1. They had the honour of singing in Croke Park at
the 2012 All-Ireland Hurling Final replay between Kilkenny
and Galway. Recently they performed at the Symphony Hall,
Birmingham by invitation of BBC Radio presenter Bob Brolly,
and as guests of Daniel O’ Donnell at his concert during the
Donegal Shore Festival. They had the pleasure of serenading
all thirty-two Rose of Tralee contestants at the opening ceremony of this year’s festival, and performing at the GAA Ladies
All-Star Awards and the National GAA Handball Awards. They
have just concluded a very successful Irish tour.
Des, the second eldest is already prominent in the music
industry as a successful Irish tenor. Having studied singing
with the renowned Dr. Veronica Dunne, he has performed ex-
tensively throughout Ireland and in the United States, both as
a soloist and with The Three Irish Tenors. Croke Park has also
provided the stage for the highlight of his career to date having
sung the National Anthem at a number of All-Ireland Finals.
Sadly, their mother Breda lost her battle against breast
cancer in 1990 at the young age of 38, leaving the young family of boys relying on the strength of their father and the support of family and friends to get through an extremely difficult
period. Richard undoubtedly proved his strength and the men
that the boys became are testament to this fact.
Not only do the brothers share a love of singing, but they
also have a passion for Gaelic games, handball in particular.
They all impressively hold All-Ireland Handball medals while
four of them, Richie, Johnny, Robbie and Sammy are World
Handball Champions.
Their debut album ‘The Promise’ which includes their hit
song ‘Where The Blarney Roses Grow’ is currently available
in stores nationwide, for download on itunes and from their
website www.thewilloughbybrothers.com. Their current single
‘Something Inside So Strong’ is receiving a lot of airplay on
radio stations across the country.
The Willoughby Brothers create a very special sound with
a repertoire featuring a blend of Irish ballads, popular classics and contemporary songs. These handsome and charming

FCE: So, tell us a little about the Bad Husbands
Club...
BHC: The Bad Husband’s Club (BHC), is a rock and
blues band formed by bassist/vocalist Len Senecal,
and bro-in-law axe-slinger singer Bryan Honeywell,
originally as a pick-up band heading off to play at his
annual “Catofest” Party. That was in 2000. Since then
the band has had many incarnations leading up to the
current one consisting of Bryan, the ubiquitous guitar/
vocals of Glen Pickert, keyboardist / vocalist / musical genius / neighbor Tom Wilson, and of course drum
guru Billy McGillavry, and the newest (and tallest) bad
husband, Bill Hill on bass. The band early on, knew a
friend with a bar, and has been gigging in some form
since ‘07. Founding member Len Senecal left the band
amicably in the fall of 2012, although still holds an
“honorary position”, welcome to step on stage when
and wherever! That’s the BHC story in a nutshell!
FCE: How long have you been together?
BHC: The band has been together in this configuration since mid summer last year, but has been rockin’
in some form since it’s inception in 2000. More on this
later.
FCE: What are your influences?
BHC: Our influences are probably our greatest asset. From roots music, to funk, fusion, jazz, Latin, pop,
punk and of course straight up rock & roll. We all have
diverse backgrounds and styles and combine to give
the band a unique flavor.
FCE: What type of band or musician are you?
‘Genre’
BHC: Predominantly vintage rock & pop (in many
flavors)…..with a twist!!
FCE: Where is the bands or musicians hometown?
BHC: From all points of the map, Syracuse to Ed-
wards!
FCE: What inspired the band or you to become
what you are?
BHC: The desire to play music & entertain the
people, to the best of our abilities and have fun doing it.
FCE: What idols do you have and why?
BHC: We all have certain idols that have shaped
us into the players & band that we are today. From the
earliest rock records we listened to as teenagers, to the
unknown player tearing it up in bars around the country. We have been gigging musicians for decades and
many idols were people we had the chance to share the
stage with for a time.
FCE: What are your songs about?
BHC: Most are about 4 minutes….unless we go
into jam-mode, then who knows!
FCE: (Laughter) You got us with that one!!
FCE: How receptive have audiences been to your
musical style?
BHC: We always get great feedback from our
crowds, usually commenting on the fact that they
never have heard other bands attempt our song selections. And also in the way that we put our own stamp
on them. One of the things we’re proudest of is the
response we get from other musicians, that always
means a bit extra to us.
FCE: What are the bands or your biggest obstacles?
BHC: Keeping the band busy. The “scene” for live
music is getting smaller all the time. Also as musicians,
balancing the set list with songs that we enjoy & challenge us, and playing songs that the crowds will know
and like….not an easy task. Then add in the demands
of families, jobs, and life in general and it’s quite a task
to say the least.
FCE: Describe your show, visual and musically?
BHC: Our shows are always upbeat & fun. We will
“tweak” our tunes to fit the atmosphere. We don’t rely
on big sound systems or lights. It’s an open, intimate
and even humorous way to spend the evening with

some great tunes that you may not have heard in a
while. It’s not unheard of for us to put a request together right on the spot.
FCE: What is your method of marketing?
BHC: We do the Facebook thing , and of course
Fourth Coast Entertainment, but mainly we are a word
of mouth band.
FCE: What are your hopes for the near future?
BHC: We hope to be able to keep on just as we
are, of course bigger money would be nice! Obviously
though that’s not really a factor, considering the distance we drive VS the price of gas. We have a great
lineup of places to play and great crowds, so full speed
ahead…..
FCE: If someone had never seen you perform,
how would you describe the sound and stage presence to them?
BHC: Expect an evening of surprises, fun, energy,
emotion and above all entertainment. No smoke & mirrors, just a real live rock & roll party. Our crowds are
mix of young & old and everything in between. Drink,
dance and be merry. You won’t be pummeled with a
wall of volume, a string of profanities, or political rants.

BHC: Sit back and enjoy an evening of live music
the way it was meant to be. Sing along with a favorite
song just like you do in your car. With such diverse
backgrounds and styles, expect the unexpected. Expect to know all the words to the songs (but don’t be
surprised if you can’t remember the artist!). Expect to
leave with a smile, looking forward to the next BHC gig.
