Aspiring and achieving together 26th March 2015 Newsletter 7 Dear Parents and Carers What a busy spring term this has been! Following the meeting on Monday evening you should all have received notes, sent by parent mail, on what was discussed in the meeting. Should you wish to express any concerns or have any questions about the current situation a new, confidential email alias [email protected] has been set up which will be closely monitored by Andy Hamilton’s office. We will be welcoming Sarah Kerswell from Hanborough Manor to the school after the Easter break to work with us for terms five and six. Book Week We were very fortunate to have the accomplished author, Sean Callery, visit our school. He led workshops for each class in story-telling and writing. The children enjoyed working creatively and have some new ideas for planning stories. Science Week The school took part in another successful science week this year and the children’s enjoyment shone through in all the activities. Year 5 and 6 children had a fantastic opportunity to meet with visitors from ‘Stem and Leaf Education’ who carried out workshops with them on the topic of space. The children were amazed to find out that they could now request images from a robotic telescope in Tenerife called ‘BURT’ and this will continue all year. Other activities included a trip to the Botanical Gardens to study plant environments, scientific thinking questions and practical investigations. School Sports News On Friday 20th March, Mars class took part in a multi-sports event, held at Bartholomew School, with some of the other schools in the partnership. We used the drama studio and sports hall for running, jumping, ball skills and team and individual events. Waste Week Your fantastic response to our ‘spring cleaning’ bag donations weighed in at a whopping 256kg which earns us 10,240 points to spend on science resources for this school - Thank you Miss Ward for organising this event again. Comic Relief fundraising Thank you all for your donations to Comic Relief, we raised £276 in total through wearing something silly for Comic Relief and the sale of biscuits and cupcakes. Mother’s Day Sale The Freeland School Society raised £55.50 from the sale of biscuits and flowers. Class Assemblies We have already enjoyed three sharing assemblies this term from Jupiter, Mars and Venus. This is an opportunity for the children to show some of the work they have enjoyed in their class. We are proud of their confident presentations of work and their excellent learning. Cooking Club This week saw our final Cooking Club session. This popular club, run by Michelle Hunt for the past 5 years, has been an inspiration to all of the children that have taken part. We are very sorry to say goodbye to Michelle and are extremely grateful to her for giving up her time to run it so successfully.
