Preface
I have been doing genealogy as a hobby for over 30 years, and fairly recently have started to
share some of my research in the form of books, in PDF format. Recently, I have been working
on some projects involving descendants. With sites such as ancestry.com, familysearch.org,
and genealogybank.com, it is possible to find much information online.
Why did I choose to research this particular set of descendants? After all, Josiah and Susanna
are only 2 of 32 different great-great grandparents of mine.
One reason is that I am aided by having their Bible record (the Bible being dated 1830) as a
starting point. In addition, Josiah Jenison was a Mayflower descendant, via his mother Mary
(Robinson) Jenison, who was the daughter of Martha (Hedge) Robinson.
Also, I have been in contact with a few descendants, who have been kind enough to share
photos and other information with me. It is my hope that by sharing what I have, more
relatives will come forth with more information which will make this book more interesting and
valuable to future generations.
This book is intended for the personal use of those who are related to, or have a special interest
in, this family. Of course, facts cannot be copyrighted, and can be used and shared without
restriction, and most of the information I include is facts. However, please do not copy, word
for word, the text of this book, unless your copying is not shared publicly. I have included
numerous footnotes. I encourage interested people to look up the original sources and put
them in their own words, adding to my information where possible instead of merely copying it.

1. Josiah JENISON was born 13 Feb 1778, probably in Barre, MA,1 the son of Abijah JENISON
and Mary ROBINSON. He was baptized 12 Apr 1778, at the First Church of Barre .2 He died 4
Sep 1861 in Shrewsbury, VT, and is buried in Northam Cemetery, North Shrewsbury, VT.3 He
married Susanna FRENCH 2 Feb 1808,4 daughter of Nathaniel FRENCH and Susanna BROWN.
She was born 12 Sep 1785 in Concord, MA, 5 and died 1 Sep 1875 in Shrewsbury, VT. She was
buried in Northam Cemetery, North Shrewsbury, VT.6
Josiah bought property in Shrewsbury, Vt., in 1802. A picture of his house can be found in a
history of Shrewsbury written by Dawn Hance. His house was valued at $150 in 1817.
According to Hance, Josiah was an enlistee for the Battle of Plattsburgh, N.Y., (1814) under
Capt. Robert Reed's company of militia.7
The Jenison family Bible was passed down to family members,8 and is inscribed "The Property
of Josiah and Susanna Jenison, Shrewsbury, Vt., Aug. 24th 1830."9

His parents lived in Barre, and he was baptized in Barre. Although his death record gives his place of birth as
Hubbardston, it is unlikely he was born there, because there was a church both Barre and Hubbardston, and if he
was born in Hubbardston, there would be no reason to take him to Barre for baptism. His parents’ names are
given on his death records and are also known from the family bible.

In both the 1850 and 1860 census, Josiah and Susannah were listed as living in Shrewsbury with
the family of their daughter Amanda Bishop.10 Josiah died of consumption. After Josiah’s
death, the house was sold to Amanda and her husband Lyman Bishop, in 1866.11

2. Amanda JENISON (Josiah JENISON) was born 21 Dec 1808 in Shrewsbury, VT,16 and died 16
May 1882 in Pittsfield, VT. 17 She married Lyman BISHOP 11 Oct 1832.18 He was born 11 Oct
1807 in Shrewsbury, VT, and died 23 Jan 1880 in Pittsfield, VT. 19 He was the son of Elihu
BISHOP and Hannah -----.20

23 May 1906 in Cleveland, OH. She was buried in Lake View Cemetery, in Cleveland.24 She
married Rev. Cyrus PRINDLE 26 Jan 1835.25 He was born 11 Apr 1800 in Canaan, CT, and died 1
Dec 1885 in Cleveland, OH.26
Cyrus had two prior marriages, first, Huldah (JOINER) STEVENS, who died 12 Oct 1832, and
second, Mary F. JOINER, sister of his first wife, who died 2 Jun 1834. He had two children by his
first wife.

Cyrus Prindle was a prominent abolitionist and one of the founders of the Wesleyan Methodist
Church. The following is excerpted from the Prindle Genealogy:
“Dr. Cyrus Prindle was a Methodist minister of much prominence in New England and New
York, and had for many years many important churches under his care at Troy, Albany,
Lansingburg, N. Y. City and other important points.
He left the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1843 in consequence of its attitude in regard to
slavery, and was one of five or six other anti-slavery ministers who organized the Wesleyan
Methodist Connection of America, at Utica, N. Y., in that year. He was editor of ‘The Wesleyan,’
the official paper of the Wesleyan Connection, at Syracuse, N. Y., for twelve years. After the
abolition of slavery and the changed attitude of the Church with regard to slavery he, in 1868,
returned to the M. E. Church, and was cordially received and highly complimented by the
Bishop for his anti-slavery work in years past.”27

5. Nancy English JENISON (Josiah JENISON) was born 27 Mar 1814 in Shrewsbury, VT,31 and
died 18 Apr 1910 in Pittsfield, VT. She died of apoplexy, and was 96 years old.32 According to a
short newspaper death notice, she was ill for “a few weeks.” 33

She married Lorenzo Dow BARNES, 16 Nov 1841.34 He was born in 18 Feb 1810, in
Bridgewater, VT, and was the son of Hamilton BARNES.35 In 1860, they lived in Stockbridge, VT.
He is listed on the census as a farmer. In 1850 they lived in Bridgewater, VT, with children
Edwin, 10, and Livonia, 3. Lorenzo died 29 Aug 1870, in Stockbridge, VT.36 Edwin was
apparently a child by a previous marriage.37 In 1880, she lived in Stockbridge, later Nancy
moved to Pittsfield. She is called “Nellie” on the death record of her daughter Arminda. Dow,
as he was often called, “was of medium size, not fleshy like his brothers and the Barnes family
in general.”38

m. Julius Moses RANNEY. He was born 12 Jul 1849 in VT; in 1880 Julius and
Livonia were living in Stockbridge, VT, with her mother Nancy. Julius was the son
of Joel RANNEY and Sarah ROGERS, and was listed with them on the 1850 census
in Pittsfield, VT. He is listed as an engineer in Gazetteer of Windsor Co., VT,
1883-4. According to Three Blackmore Genealogies, “They lived on her father’s
farm in Stockbridge, Vt., until the house burned and was not rebuilt by her
husband (it being possible), which was a great disappointment to her. She was a
good woman and lived a broken life.” She died, “in a Boston (Mass.) hospital,
after a severe sickness in Pittsfield, Vt.” Julius was born 12 Jul 1849, in Pittsfield,
VT. He married, 2nd, Mary C. PORTER in 1896 in Woonsocket, RI. He filed for
divorce in 1908. He died 8 Jun 1917, in Duluth, MN.

6. Susannah French JENISON (Josiah JENISON) was born 18 Dec 181542 in Shrewsbury, VT,43 and
died 7 Mar 188344 in Floyd, IA. She was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Floyd, IA.45 She married
Artemas Slack HUBBARD 16 Jan 1834,46 son of Reuben HUBBARD and Lucy SLACK. He was born
3 Nov 1809 probably in Plymouth, VT,47 and died 29 Jan 1903 in Balaton, MN. 48 He was buried
in Oakwood Cemetery, in Floyd, IA.
Although her birth name was Susannah, she was known as Susan. Artemas and Susan
moved to Hubbardston, MA, by 1837, and to Ashburnham by 1844, based on the locations of
the births of their children. Artemas was the manager of a poor house in Ashburnham at a
salary of $225 a year. His duties were bookkeeping and buying supplies. 49 According to the
1850 census he was a laborer. In 1869 Artemas and family moved to Floyd, IA. 50 He is listed on
the 1870 census there as a farmer.

Hattie A. JOHNSON.60 In 1900 they lived in Acadia, LA. It is almost certain that
he is the Edward Marsh who moved to Alabama, remarried Mattie MINYARD,
being listed in Semmes, AL, on the 1920 census. He died 12 Apr 1922 in
Semmes, AL. The birth date shown on his gravestone is 19 Aug 1844.

9. Jerusha Wise JENISON (Josiah JENISON) was born 7
May 182462 in Shrewsbury, VT, and died 4 Oct 1902 in
Pittsfield, VT.63 She died of stomach cancer.64 She
married Columbia GRAVES 4 Mar 1845.65 He was born 26
May 1820 in Shrewsbury, VT, the son of Luther GRAVES
and Roxanna CASE.66 He died 27 Sep 1865 in Shrewsbury,
VT.67 He was buried in Shrewsbury, VT. He was a farmer.
He died of Typhoid fever, and was only 45 years old.68

attractive in Washington.”111 In 1900 they lived in Washington, DC, with three servants.

She married, second, Rev. Joseph Holbrook WHITNEY, 21 Jan 1864.126 He was her first
husband’s brother, and was born 21 Nov 1824, in Sutton, MA. He died 16 Feb 1916 in Baraboo,
WI. Joseph served for almost three years in the Union Army during the Civil War. After the
war, he studied for the Methodist ministry. He and Mary moved to Wisconsin in Apr 1868.
After Mary’s death in 1877, Joseph married a second time.127

Edgar operated a mill in Charles City, IA, and later in Sauk
Rapids, MN. In 1899 the family moved to Balaton, MN, and in
1906, to Rockford, IL, where he managed the Bartlett Flour and
Grist Mill. In 1918 he and Lunette moved to Bladensburg, MD,
to live with their daughter. He was a member of the First
Presbyterian Church of Hyattsville.

Club, and a member of the Franciscan Sisters Auxiliary in Superior.”
