Arboretum volunteers get
techy with new site and app
We’ve always known that Lyon
Arboretum volunteers are very
special people with diverse talents and abilities that they utilize
to help make Lyon Arboretum the
very special place that it is … but
we’ve now got some real proof!
Lyon Arboretum’s new website
and mobile app were developed
with the guidance and direction
and hundreds of hours of work
by Kimberly Jackson, a visionary
graduate student working with
the Museum Studies program at
Cindy Teal, Rebecca Lesher and Dick Carlson used GPS to create a
UH Mānoa.
user-friendly trail map of the Arboretum.
The two new sites work in concert to
provide visitors and the community with
updates on the events, programs, research,
collections, tours and classes etc. at Lyon.
Richard Sears on our staff, will be the new
webmaster, and will help to keep the site
populated with current information. The
mobile app, a free download for your android phone or iPhone is available from our
website at: manoa.hawaii.edu/lyonarboretum. Or you can go directly to the iPhone
app store, Google Play app store or Amazon
app store for free downloads of the Lyon
Arboretum mobile app. Load it before you

arrive at Lyon and you can use it to listen to
the audio tour in the Native Plant Garden
and Ethnobotany Garden! The website also
allows students, visitors and volunteers to
add their own photos to the website! This
project has been made possible by pro bono
support from the University of Hawai`i Mānoa Museum Studies Program.
We also recently installed 2 beautiful new
detailed maps of the arboretum grounds
and trails, with images from the gardens
(with another map coming when the trail
head is reopened). This volunteer powered
and led GIS project was completed by 3
of our amazing Lyon volunteers; Rebecca
Lesher, Cindy Teal (who also leads guided
tours at Lyon) and Dick Carlson (who also
volunteers in the greenhouse and as a
trail-sweeper). They hiked, mapped, discovered, and uncovered the entire Lyon Trail
system over the last year. Using a hand held
GPS device, they created a beautiful and
very user-friendly trail map and overlaid
it on a satellite image of the arboretum …
you can actually identify specific trees on
the map! Next time you visit, check out the
new maps, try a new trail, and if you see our
volunteers, join us in thanking them for all
the wonderful work that they do!

From the Director’s Desk
Greetings! At this special time of year, I find
myself reflecting on all
the changes that 2014
has entailed for myself
and for Lyon Arboretum. Personally, I made
the shift from being
an Associate Dean in
the College of Tropical
Agriculture and Human
Resources to Interim Director of Lyon
Arboretum in May. This has been a
wonderful opportunity for me to return
to my roots and interests in Hawaiian
botany and gardens and to have the
privilege of leading this outstanding
and historic arboretum. Every day I still
find it remarkable that I get to come to
work at this beautiful place.
Also Lyon Arboretum has experienced
significant change this past year. Longtime Director Christopher Dunn left
Hawaii in April to become the Executive
Director of the Cornell Plantations in
New York. I am grateful to his leadership and many successful initiatives
here at Lyon Arboretum which we will
continue to benefit from for years to
come. Major projects are underway
which will change the face of the Arboretum and allow significant expansion
of our programs. The long awaited
Hawaiian Rare Plant Conservation Lab
is approaching completion of the design phase
and in 2015 will move to
bidding and hopefully the
beginning of construction. Planning is also
well underway for a Trail
Improvement Project
to increase safety and
access to trails throughout the Arboretum. This
planning will be completed in 2015 and
we hope to begin to implement the
plan very soon after. Also the skyline
of the Arboretum has significantly
changed this past fall with the removal
of 8 large Albizia trees between the
Main Arboretum and Harrison Roads.
By early 2015, this first phase to remove
12 trees from the lower grounds will be
completed and this section of the arboretum will be reopened to much greater
visitor safety. We anticipate major new
plantings in the areas opened up by
the Albizia removal and a possibility of
a second round of Albizia removals in
2015.
Lyon Arboretum has continued the
tradition of Plant Sales with successful
events on May 10th and November
22nd. We greatly appreciate the many
vendors, staff and volunteers who
participated in these sales and are
especially grateful to the public for their
enthusiastic turn out and purchases,
which help to support the Arboretum.
Also the Friends of Lyon Arboretum,
our wonderful volunteer association,
held a very enjoyable and successful
fund raising event, “Lyon in the Sun”
on November 2nd. Their persistence
in holding the event (after postponing
due to the threat of Hurricane Ana) and
hard work is greatly appreciated by all
at Lyon Arboretum. There are many
volunteers, docents, guides, class instructors, sponsors and other contributors who have generously given of their
time and resources to Lyon Arboretum
over the past year who are deserving
of thanks. Let me just say that we are
deeply grateful for all the help, support
and encouragement we have received
from so many people in 2014!
I look forward to an exciting and productive new year and believe that together we will accomplish even greater
things in 2015 here at Lyon Arboretum.
Hau’oli Makahiki Hou,

The staff of Lyon Arboretum would like
to express a heartfelt MAHALO to Ann
Kadowaki for generously donating her
Toyota Highlander to the arboretum. The
Highlander fills a void left when one of
the arboretums two trucks went down a
couple of years ago.
Ann Kadowaki is vice president of the
board of the Friends of Lyon Arboretum.
