Itinerary includes:
•• Introduction to Albanian
heritage
•• One week of restoration work
with experts and owners
•• Excursions to Ottoman-era
castles, Byzantine church,
classical archaeological sites and
communist prison camp
valley in southern Albania, near Greece. Known as the “City of Stone,” it’s a World
Heritage Site, with more than 600 Ottoman-era buildings, many in degraded
condition.
Join the restoration efforts, led by Cultural Heritage without Borders’ Regional
Restoration Camps, recipient of a 2014 EU Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa
Nostra Award for Education, Training and Awareness-Raising. Enjoy engaging lectures
and experience hands-on work in restoration and conservation with assistance from
experts in traditional tools and methods.
Get to know students from across the Balkans who attend the camp and locals
who offer lessons in drawing, cooking and Albanian dance. Experience Albanian
cuisine and cafe culture in your free time.
Tour the capital city of Tirana and environs, including Spac Prison (with a
discussion of communism in Albania), an archaeological park, the castle and historical
bazaar of Kruja, and lunch at an eco-hotel.
Enjoy a reception and dinner with members of the Albanian Fulbright
Association and alumni of other U.S. exchanges.
