LET’S GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER!
A COFFEE CHAT WITH...
Susan Morgan
1.) How many years have you been attending FUMC? What made you start
attending? I walked through the back door of FUMC 30 years ago this June. I had
just moved to Marquette from Ann Arbor and was looking for a United Methodist
church to help me feel welcome in my new hometown. I grew up in a Methodist
church – confirmed in St. Paul’s in Rochester, Michigan in…. 1970-ish? White robe
and all.
2.) Tell us about your musical background? Why is music important to you?
Music is the background track running through my head all day – it binds everything
together. I hear music in the writing I do. I took piano lessons for about 10 years and
even a brief foray into church organ until I figured out I wasn’t coordinated enough
to add in the foot pedals. I’ve been singing in a choir most of my life, beginning with
Cherub choir at St. Paul’s when I was in kindergarten, moving through Galileans and Crusaders….and on. I was in
choirs in high school and college too, and joined with FUMC and Choral Society here in Marquette. I also was part of
the first handbell choir in the greater Detroit area back at St. Paul’s in the 1970s. We rang in all sorts of small town
Methodist churches and nursing homes throughout Southeast Michigan, often literally for our suppers!
3.) Do you have any hobbies? I read a lot-a lot. And Jim and I fish a lot-a lot. In a sort of self-defense/marriage
therapy for blended families, I took up hunting a few years ago, with rifle and more recently crossbow. I love sitting
outdoors and waiting for birds and critters to wander past.
4.) What are you passionate about? It sounds corny. But I am passionate about kindness and
encouragement. And there is a strong link between these and my interest in reading. Studies show that when we
imagine ourselves in the lives of others, we build empathy. So – my hope is that when I eventually retire, I can find a
way to volunteer with literacy efforts either through the local library or the schools.
5.) Tell me something that no one knows about you? :) That would be tough – I’m an open book! Here’s
one: I’ve visited 49 of the 50 states – just missing Hawaii.

Believe it or not, Drew and Maggie (our Australian
shepherd) have already been swimming this season.
We thought they were crazy, but they jumped right in
and had a great time. It seemed like a great
inspiration for the rest of us. We look forward to
plunging in to some great shared summer events
with you. Vacation Bible School, scheduled for the
week of June 22, promises to be a wonderful
opportunity for kids and volunteers alike. Our goal is
to have as many people involved as possible in some
way in this important ministry that nurtures our own
church family even as it reaches out to our neighbors
and community. If you've not yet done so, please
check out what's happening out at Camp
Michigamme as there are new opportunities for
campers and volunteers. We also look forward to the
Block Party and some unique worship opportunities.
Let's dive in together and see what our brief but
glorious warm season brings as we move ahead
together.

Eleanor Olsen, long time member of FUMC, will be celebrating her 94th birthday on
June 9! She is currently a resident of Eastwood Nursing Center, 900 Maas St.

perhaps stop in to visit.
Report of the 4th Annual Food Fight
We concluded our 4th Annual Food Fight last Sunday, May 17th, bringing in just over $2500 which will be
donated to the Central UP Food Bank to provide food for the more than 50 food pantries they supply.
Because of the purchasing efficiencies available to the Food Bank, the $2500 in cash donations will allow the
Food Bank to purchase food with a retail value of over $25,000.
This friendly "Fight" pits different groups in the church against each other to win the coveted soup can
trophy. This year Pastor Kristi Hintz's Team won handily, though they were energetically pursued by both the
second place Sanctuary Choir and third place United Methodist Men. All the groups in the church got in on
the fun, trying to out-do each other. Next year, all the other groups may want to join forces in order to
surpass Pastor Kristi's Team.
We had wonderful participation from a broad base of congregation members and greatly appreciate
everyone's effort and spirit. The BIG winner is the Central UP Food Bank and the families who benefit from
their services.
~Thank you from your Missions Team
Spring Salad Spree—Thank you!
The United Methodist Women would also like to thank everyone who
participated in the Spring Salad Spree on Thursday, April 23 —whether you
helped with planning, ticket sales, set-up, making salads, clean up, or coming out
to enjoy a delicious variety of salads. A total of $1,677.00 was raised from
donations and ticket sales and approximately 170 people were served.
