Top 10 Reasons
to Volunteer at
Lubbock Meals on Wheels
10. To provide a hot, nutritious meal that you didn’t have to cook.
9. Keep your mind sharp by learning new parts of town and how to follow directions.
8. See at least a dozen people that are very happy to see you.
7. Snacks and coffee in the volunteer center.
6. Get out in the fresh air, rain, dust, or snow.
5. Use your trunk for something other than golf clubs.
4. Get a cool picture identification badge.
3. Make the Volunteer Coordinator’s life less stressful.
2. All your friends are doing it and it will make you popular.
But, all kidding aside, the number one reason to volunteer at Lubbock Meals on Wheels:
1. One hour of your time can make an incredible difference in the life of someone who is
homebound, elderly, or disabled.
National Volunteer Appreciation Week is April 15 -21 and Lubbock Meals on
Wheels’ will show our appreciation for our over 1,000 volunteers at our Annual
Volunteer Appreciation Reception. The event will be held at 7:00p.m. Friday,
April 20th, at Indiana Avenue Baptist Church, 9507 Indiana Avenue. Volunteers
will be treated to a dessert provided by Dickey’s Barbeque and many will receive
various personalized awards for their years of service.
Fat Tuesday was Fun Tuesday!
Lubbock Meals on Wheels held the thirteenth annual Mardi Gras fundraiser on February 21. Fortunately, the weather cooperated
and allowed for one of our largest crowds and a very successful event raising over $70,000. The guests were treated to delicious
food from 37 local restaurants, live jazz music by the Shinn Turner Dixieland Band featuring Hayley Burton, a large silent auction, spectacular balloon arrangements, a sparkling ice sculpture, and various entertainers including dancers, clowns, and caricature
artists. Younger guests had a great time on the inflatable bouncers and spider climber or having their hair and faces painted in the
children’s activity area. The crowd, adorned in festive beads and masks, was greeted by the Mardi Gras King and Queen (Evan Onstot and Nikki-Dee Ray of KLBK) who reigned over the evening in regal attire. Plans are already underway for Mardi Gras 2013
in the Civic Center Exhibit Hall.

often) can be fun after all! I appreciate all
of you for helping make my life a joy!

My meals and the people who bring them
brighten my day. I’d like to see more sweet
potatoes, gingerbread and pea salad. My
favorite meal is Ranch Casserole and cornbread. You and your Angels are a blessing.

Many dogs and cats are still benefiting from the Pet Food Program. Dry dog
and cat food is sent out to these four-legged companions every other Tuesday.
Recently this program has grown dramatically and now feeds 114 dogs and 75 cats.
We are in need of donations of dry dog food and cat food now more than ever as our
supplies are running out much more quickly.

a note from the executive director
The entire community works
together to insure the continued success of our meal program. Volunteer
drivers, both regular and substitute,
are needed each day to deliver meals.
Currently, we have 700 corporate
drivers and over 330 community
volunteers.
Our role is very important as we
deliver a hot meal Monday through
Friday to people who are homebound,
elderly, or disabled. In our country today, extended families rarely live in the
same town, much less the same home.
This shift in society directly impacts the care of family members.
Lubbock Meals on Wheels provides more than a meal. We are
the human touch. Our volunteers are knocking on the door,
saying hello, and checking on that homebound person.
April is Volunteer Month and the Board of Directors and
staff want to thank all of the wonderful, kind volunteers who
are the backbone of our program. Together, we make a difference in many people’s lives.
Extra! Extra!

Every June, Lubbock Meals on Wheels, in an attempt to raise public awareness
of our mission, holds the Big Wheels Deliver Meals promotion in conjunction
with Sonic Drive-Ins. On Friday June 22, local celebrities, chauffeured in classic
cars, will deliver a meal of burgers and tater tots to all Lubbock Meals on Wheels’
recipients. It is a treat for our recipients to be visited by these important people,
see these nostalgic cars, and enjoy a special lunch. All celebrities and drivers are
invited to return to the Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ office for lunch (also provided by Sonic). Forty-five classic cars and drivers are needed to accommodate
all the routes. It is always a challenge to round up enough cars for the event so if
you own a classic or unique car and would like to participate in this very special
promotion, please call Lisa or DeAnn at 792-7971.

mission
statement
Respecting the dignity of every
human being, no matter their need or
physical condition, Lubbock Meals on
Wheels will provide nutritious, home
delivered meals to those who are
homebound, elderly or disabled. We
shall seek to break the social isolation
experienced by the homebound by
providing warm, caring, friendly
contact through our volunteers.
Volunteer Spotlight
Beginning with this newsletter we will now include a new article called the Volunteer Spotlight. To kick off this new addition, we are featuring two of our “Top 15” volunteers (based
on the number of hours they serve annually). Future newsletters will feature one Lubbock
Meals on Wheels’ volunteer and will include a photo and information about their volunteer
service in their own words. We hope you will enjoy reading about some of our many dedicated volunteers and perhaps their stories will inspire you to volunteer as well!

Why did you decide to volunteer? Gary Weaver said,
“Come on” so here I am, so there!
Why do you continue to volunteer? Does me good –
maybe more me than the one that I’m delivering to. I feel like maybe I’m being a little bit
useful.
Most memorable volunteer experience: There was
one lady that used to be on my route that
suffered from severe dementia. Each time I
went to her house she would be all dressed up
wearing red high heels and lots of make-up
and tell me I was there on the wrong day and
didn’t seem to know why I was there. I would
have to explain to her that I was bringing her
a meal from Meals on Wheels. One day, after
convincing her that I had a meal for her, as
she opened the door she fell and in trying to
catch her we both ended up on the floor. I
called 911 and told her to stay put and help
would be here soon. As I had one more meal
to deliver nearby I went to do that and came
right back to find the paramedics there with
her. I began to wonder what in the world she
would tell the emergency workers about me
and what had happened. As soon as she saw
me she asked where her meal was! I told her
I had put it in the refrigerator but she didn’t
believe me so one of the paramedics checked
it out and confirmed that it was there. That
was the last day I delivered to her as she then
was moved to a nursing home. She did not
seem to remember much else but she always
remembered to put on those red high heels
and get dressed up every day!
Why do you think your volunteer work is important? I
am totally SOLD on this Meals on Wheels
operation. Stands alone on donations with
NO government interference. I personally
know the people who are making it work. I
am proud to tell people where I “work” –
where I volunteer.
What do you want people to know about Lubbock Meals
on Wheels? Lubbock Meals on Wheels is operated without government money.

Due to the constant increases in postage,
Lubbock Meals on Wheels would like

Why did you decide to volunteer? My older brother
was homebound in the late 1980s. He used
Meals on Wheels two different times during
this period. I saw the benefit that Meals on
Wheels provided him during this time. When
I retired I knew that I needed a project and
Meals on Wheels was my choice and it has
worked well for me.
Why do you continue to volunteer? I volunteer at
Meals on Wheels because I really enjoy seeing the recipients. They seem to appreciate
a smile, a kind word nearly as much as the
lunch. I benefit also because I really like delivering to them.
Most memorable volunteer experience: I have met
so many neat people that have touched and
enriched my life. Volunteer work also makes
me realize how fortunate I am.
Why do you think your volunteer work is important?
Volunteering is important to the recipient and
to me. I am fortunate to have good health
so that I can deliver a meal to someone that
needs it. Volunteer work benefits the recipient
as well as the person volunteering.
What do you want people to know about Lubbock Meals
on Wheels? Lubbock Meals on Wheels provides
a much needed service to people that might
not eat otherwise. A lot of the recipients have
no family nearby and they look forward to
having someone come by on a daily basis.

The Annie’s Chat & Chew event is
coming up at the Mae Simmons Senior
Center on Saturday, April 14th from
11a.m.-2p.m. This fundraiser was started
over twenty years ago by long-time volunteer Annie Sanders and continues as
a memorial once again this year. Guests
will enjoy plenty of great food (especially
the fried catfish), visiting with friends,
and remembering Annie Sanders, a very
generous woman. Donations are accepted
at the door to help fund the purchase of
meals for the homebound community
served by Lubbock Meals on Wheels.
In Loving Memory
Lubbock Meals on Wheels would like to remember the many volunteers
who passed away in the past year. Our sympathies go to their families and
friends. These special people will be greatly missed by all who knew them.
