Assistant Environmental Health Specialist Job Description
Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health or related field OR equivalent experience, ability
to obtain certification as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist, Certified Pool Operator, and
Standardized Retail Food Inspector, excellent written and oral communication skills, general computer skills
including Microsoft Word and Excel, ability to work on several tasks at the same time amid frequent
distractions and interruptions.
Responsibilities:
 Reviews food establishment plans and issues permits
 Inspects food establishments, documents violations of Title 410 IAC 7-24, works with food
establishment owners and employees to remedy violations including educating personnel about
food safety, and enforces appropriate laws and ordinances.
 Completes paperwork and data entry for food establishment records
 Reviews onsite septic system construction/repair applications and soil scientist’ reports and then
determines septic system specifications; issues permits based on these specifications
 Consults with homeowners and septic system contractors during the process of septic system
installations; provides education as needed
 Is trained to inspect onsite septic systems for compliance with Rule 410 IAC 6-8.3
 Is trained to enforce laws and ordinances for onsite septic systems
 Completes paperwork and data entry for onsite septic installations and repairs including entering
data into the Indiana network for Tracking of Onsite Sewage Systems (iTOSS)
 Is trained to inspect tattoo and body piercing facilities and enforce appropriate laws and
ordinances; educates facility personnel about health hazards
 Is trained to inspect swimming pools and bathing/wading pool operations; provides education on
health hazards and compliance with laws and ordinances, takes appropriate action as necessary
 Is trained to identify hazards and examine conditions as they affect public and environmental
health, institutional sanitation and safety, hazardous materials, solid waste handling and disposal
practice, vector control, and recreational areas
 Is trained to investigate complaints related to environmental and public health hazards,
communicate with property/establishment owners concerning remedies, and enforce appropriate
laws and ordinances; completes paperwork and record-keeping related to complaints
 Is trained to Work with our nursing staff to investigate diseases and health hazards related to
animal bites and food establishment communicable disease issues and to take appropriate action
 Provides public health information to LHD patrons in our office and occasionally through outreach
opportunities such as area county fairs
 Works with the health officer, LHD staff and community agencies to respond to public health
emergencies
 Performs other public health-related duties as assigned by the health officer and as public health
issues arise
