As the supervisor of one of the Garland Parks & Recreation Department recreation centers, he recruited interested people to attend a planning meeting. After several months of planning and organizing, Garland Mayor Charles Matthews issued a mayoral proclamation, and the Garland ISD Board of Trustees passed a Board Resolution pledging support. Thus began the Garland Sports Hall of Fame. Buster Leavell served as the founding chairman/president of the GSHF Board of Governors five years. He was succeeded by Steve Finigan who served for the next two years, followed by Chuck Cabaniss who took the role of president for next 17 years. After Chuck Cabaniss’ retirement in 2011, Dr. Gary Reeves was elected the President of the Board and in 2015, Sam McElroy took over the position as President. The Garland Sports Hall of Fame is a non-profit organization, formed to honor deserving individuals. All honorees have contributed to athletics in the Garland ISD and have helped to stimulate a continued interest in sports participation and related activities. Each year, the GSHF holds a banquet to recognize the new inductees, an honor team, two outstanding GISD high school athletes, and to present donations to selected youth charities. Past inductees include players from the National Football League and National Basketball Association. Some inductees have competed for the United States in the Olympic Games or the Pan-American Games. GSHF inductees have been chosen from local players, coaches or other individuals who have played an instrumental role in the success of sports in Garland, Rowlett and Sachse. To date, more than 100 individuals have been inducted into the Garland Sports Hall of Fame. We appreciate your ongoing support in our efforts to honor past and present outstanding athletes who have contributed to a wealth of talent in Garland, Rowlett, and Sachse. Bobby Boyd was a four-sport standout in high school for the Owls, but is best remembered for his accomplishments in football. He was Garland’s first scholastic All-American in 1955, and was twice selected as an All-State halfback following the 1954 and 1955 seasons. He is still the Owls’ all-time leader in rushing, scoring and interceptions, accounting for 3,150 yards on the ground (averaging 7.19 yards per carry), 35 touchdowns and 23 pass thefts during his varsity career. He also starred in basketball, baseball and track during his years at Garland High. In basketball, he was named honorable mention All-State as a junior and second-team All-State as a senior, when his scoring average was 26.2 points per game. Bobby continued to excel in football in college as a member of Bud Wilkinson’s program at Oklahoma University, where he helped lead the Sooners to a pair of Big Eight Conference championships. In 1959, he was chosen as the All-Big Eight quarterback, and also received All-American recognition. After graduating from Oklahoma, Bobby spent a very active nine seasons in professional football with the Baltimore Colts. During his distinguished career, he was chosen as an All-Pro cornerback four times. His great defensive instincts helped him intercept a total of 57 passes for the Colts, a mark which ranks him among the top ten interception leaders in the history of the NFL. 2015 Sponsorship Opportunities ______ $10,000 GOLD Tournament Title Sponsor Entitles sponsor to twelve (12) playing spots - Shares Tournament Title with the Garland Sports Hall of Fame, receives recognition on tournament shirts and awards dinner, Tournament Title Sponsor signage, banner advertising at Firewheel Golf Park, recognition at Hall of Fame Banquet and Hall of Fame website. ______ $5,000 SILVER Tournament Sponsor Entitles sponsor to eight (8) playing spots - Receives recognition at tournament awards dinner, Tournament Silver Sponsor signage, banner advertising at Firewheel Golf Park, recognition at Hall of Fame Banquet and Hall of Fame website. ______ $1,000 BRONZE Tournament Sponsor Entitles sponsor to eight (4) playing spots - Receives recognition at tournament awards dinner, Tournament Bronze Sponsor signage, recognition at Hall of Fame Banquet and Hall of Fame website. ______ $150 Hole Sponsor Entitles sponsor Hole Sign on course ______ $125 Individual Player - Includes: Green Fee, ½ golf cart, Driving Range, 2 Door Prize Tickets, Snacks for the course, Soft Drinks, Water and After- Tournament Dinner with Awards Ceremony.
